2009 NFL Mock Draft Version 2.0

In my first attempt to project the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft, I predicted the Lions to take Georgia’s Matthew Stafford with the first overall pick, Alabama’s offensive tackle Andre Smith to fall out of the top 15 and I also drummed up a potential swap between the Browns and 49ers so that San Fran could land USC signal caller Mark Sanchez.

But to paraphrase that overactor Nicholas Cage in “The Rock”: Gee, kind of a lot has happened since then. Most notably the Bears sending two first round picks to the Broncos for quarterback Jay Cutler and the Giants’ release of receiver Plaxico Burress.

Here’s my second attempt at projecting the first round of this month’s draft. As always, feel free to criticize in the comments section, but remember that I’m a human – I have feelings, too, damn it. So be gentle.

1. Detroit Lions: Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia
Mock 1.0 Projection: Stafford
Nothing in the past couple of weeks has changed my mind about Stafford eventually winding up in Detroit. GM Martin Mayhew reportedly wants to trade this selection because of the financial burden that is bestowed upon having the top overall pick, but other teams don’t want it for the same reason. In the end, Jason Smith (Baylor) and Eugene Monroe (Virginia) are both very good options here, but the Lions were reportedly very impressed with Stafford’s private workout and you know what? They simply need a quarterback.

Should the NFL change its draft seeding?

ESPN.com’s John Clayton brings up an interesting debate about whether or not the NFL should change the current way it does its draft seeding.

NFL DraftThere is one idea that came from last year’s 8-8 Chargers season that does have merit. The Chargers defeated the Colts in overtime in the wild-card round and advanced to the divisional round. Yet, in the draft seedings, the Chargers select 16th, the Colts 27th.

Under a competition committee proposal, playoff teams would be reseeded based on how deep they go in the playoffs. Teams eliminated in the first round would be seeded from 21 to 24 based on their record. Also, non-playoff teams wouldn’t suffer at the expense of playoff teams in the draft, the tool that is vital for improving the talent base of a team.

This rule is broken. Having the Chargers draft before 9-7 non-playoff teams such as the New York Jets, Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers isn’t right. Chargers fans enjoyed a playoff game, while the Jets’ poor finish left fans heartbroken. Those fans shouldn’t have to see the Chargers get a pick before them.

Couldn’t agree more. If the Chargers were good enough to get past the Colts in the first round of the playoffs, then technically they’re the better team and should have a lower draft seeding. It doesn’t make sense to reward the Chargers in the draft when they were already good enough to get the second round of the playoffs.

Clayton is on the money in this instance.

Bucs’ linebacker Hayes stabbed by girlfriend

Tampa Bay Bucs’ linebacker Geno Haynes has had a rough past couple of days.

Geno HayesThe girlfriend of Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Geno Hayes stabbed him in the head with a pair of scissors and in the neck with a knife, Hillsborough County deputies say.

Hayes was taken to a hospital by a friend, and he was treated and released, Hillsborough County sheriff’s spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.

Deputies arrested 19-year-old Shevelle Bagley at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Carter said.
Bagley was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

The incident began with an argument Saturday, and Bagley grabbed a pair of scissors, stabbing Hayes and causing a superficial wound to Hayes’ head, Carter said. Hayes got the scissors away from Bagley.

Then Bagley “grabbed a knife and stabbed him in the neck,” Carter said.

Bagley’s bail was set at $25,000. She has since been released.

Dear Lord, Hayes is lucky he wasn’t killed.

Geno, this is a great time to pack your bags and get the hell out of dodge. It’s probably a safe bet that this isn’t the one to bring home to mom.

NFL News: Westbrook, Warner and Ward

– Eagles’ running back Brian Westbrook underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee over a month ago according to the Philadelphia Daily News. The procedure was apparently a routine “cleanup” and already has recovered.

– The Cardinals have upped the ante in an attempt to keep quarterback Kurt Warner in Arizona. The Cards increased their contract offer from $20 million to $23 million over two years. Warner’s visit to San Fran must have spooked the ‘Zona front office.

– The Bucs signed running back Derrick Ward to a four-year, $17 million contract with $6 million in guarantees. Will this signing cost Cadillac Williams a roster spot?

– The Chargers are reportedly shopping cornerback Antonio Cromartie according to the San Diego-Tribune. The Bolts want to sign free agent Drayton Florence and already have Antoine Cason and Quentin Jammer as starters, which means there isn’t much room for Cromartie.

– The Titans upgraded their receiving corps with the addition of wideout Nate Washington, formerly of the Super Bowl champion Steelers. Washington is coming off a nice season and at 25, has a lot of football ahead of him. The Titans drastically needed to add offensive talent and this was a good start.

Housh to sign with Vikings soon?

Perhaps the biggest name still left on the free agent market is wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who appears poised to sign with the Vikings if you read between the lines.

When the free agency period began last Friday, Housh set up a visit with the Seahawks. He left Seattle without signing a contract, however, and despite rumors that the Lions, Bengals and Bears were interested, Housh headed to Minnesota for a visit with the Vikings on Saturday.

He hasn’t left Minnesota since.

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Housh remained in Minnesota overnight Sunday and is expected to make a decision on whom he’ll sign with by Monday night. He is supposed to pay a visit to Tampa early this week, but it appears that the Vikes are trying hard not to let him leave Minnesota without a contract.

Houshmandzadeh and Bernard Berrian would make quite the underrated receiving tandem in Minnesota. Coupled with bruiser Adrian Peterson and a solid line, the Vikings would have one of the better offenses in the NFC and certainly the best in the North. Some fans might not be enthralled with the Sage Rosenfels trade, but he’ll give Tarvaris Jackson some competition and head coach Brad Childress will allow the best man win this summer.

If the Vikings could eventually land Housh (and for what it’s worth, I think they will), then they’d easily be the favorites to once again with the NFC North. Signing Housh would also mean that they could concentrate on filling some holes on the defensive side of the ball and add good overall depth to the entire team.

Unless the Bucs make a strong push, the last time the Vikings probably have to worry about swooping in and stealing Housh would be the Bengals. Cincy still remains in the mix and even though Housh would probably be upgrading his situation if he went to Minnesota, he has history with the Bengals and his heart could remain there.
