      Fired coordinator takes shot at Jauron

      Following his firing over the weekend, former Bills offensive coordinator Turk Schonert took a parting shot at head coach Dick Jauron.

      From ESPN.com:

      “He wants a ‘Pop Warner’ offense,” Schonert said in a phone interview with WIVB. “He limited me in formations, and limited me in plays. He’s been on my back all offseason.”

      Both quarterback Trent Edwards and receiver Lee Evans supported the move after the team returned to practice Sunday to start preparing for its season opener at New England on Sept. 14. Both indicated players had voiced their concerns about the offensive sputters to coach Dick Jauron, who ultimately made the decision to fire Schonert on Friday.

      “I think everybody had concerns about it,” Evans said. “I think the basis of it was that things weren’t getting done the right way. And that was the cause of the change.”

      Well that’s a good way to get yourself hired by another team, Turk – burn down bridges. The Bills offense has been anemic this preseason and if the players support the move, then it’s hard to criticize Jauron for his decision to let Schonert go.

      Daily Six-Pack: NFL preseason rewind

      Here are six quick-hit thoughts on some of Week 1’s preseason NFL action.

      1. Stafford was impressive.
      While it was only the first preseason game of his young career, Matthew Stafford was awfully impressive Saturday against the Falcons. In his debut, Stafford completed 7 of 14 passes for 110 yards and a touchdown. And if Keary Colbert didn’t have hands made of concrete, Stafford’s numbers would have been more impressive. Granted, he was playing against Atlanta’s backups, Detroit kept their starting offensive line largely intact and he did throw an interception that was returned 41 yards for a touchdown. But the key was that Stafford looked comfortable in the pocket, showed confidence in his throws and for a rookie, displayed great footwork and overall mechanics. He still has much to prove, but if he continues to play this well throughout the preseason, it might be hard for the Lions to keep the rookie off the field in his first year.

      2. The Bears secondary looked shaky.
      If Saturday’s preseason loss to the Bills was any indication of how Chicago’s secondary will play in the regular season, then the Bears are in trouble. Lee Evans abused cornerback Nathan Vasher repeatedly, while Trent Edwards and Ryan Fitzpatrick completed over 88 percent of their passes. Granted, it was only one preseason game and rookie sixth round pick Al Afalava was impressive against the run. But the Bears look awfully thin in the secondary and if the starters perform as poorly as they did last night for the remainder of the preseason, then trouble could be on the horizon.

      Daily Six-Pack: NFL Preseason Saturday

      Six games highlight Saturday’s preseason action in the NFL. Below are six things to keep an eye on tonight in the NFL.

      1. It’s the start of a new era in Detroit.
      Word out of Lions camp is that rookie Matthew Stafford is way ahead of the curve when it comes to first-year quarterbacks. Even though Detroit would love to see veteran Daunte Culpepper take the majority of the snaps behind a brutal offensive line this season, it appears that Stafford has made quite the impression and it may be hard for the Lions to keep him on the sidelines. Today when the Lions host the Falcons in both teams’ preseason opener, Detroit isn’t going to overact to Stafford’s performance either way. If he goes out and throws two interceptions in two series, they’ll shrug it off as a learning experience. If he throws two touchdowns on his first two pass attempts, the team will chalk it up to preseason luck and hope the live game experience will be valuable in his development. The point is that it’s only preseason and chances are, his performance won’t be an indication either way of how well he’ll fair in Detroit. The key is that the Lions can officially put their disastrous 2008 season behind them today, and Stafford represents the future.

      2. Cutler makes his Bears’ debut.
      You’ll be hard pressed to find a Chicagoan who isn’t thinking playoffs (or even Super Bowl) after the Bears acquired quarterback Jay Cutler from the Broncos this offseason. You’ll have to excuse Chicago fans for their budding enthusiasm because, you see, they’ve been waiting a long time for a quarterback of Cutler’s ilk to pass through their great city. Sure, the Bears still don’t have the greatest set of receivers and there are still question marks surrounding the offensive line, even after the offseason addition of Orlando Pace. But none of that will matter once Cutler lines up under center tonight against the Bills and riffles his first completion, because the Bears finally have their quarterback.

      Michael Vick to the Bills?

      Rumors are swirling that the Bills are going to eventually sign free agent quarterback Michael Vick, although nothing has been confirmed yet.

      From Bills.com:

      The latest comes from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who tweeted the following:

      Adam_Schefter: Here are the two sleeper teams on Vick not getting mentioned, but that I now sense could be in play here: Buffalo and Dallas.

      Schefter doesn’t mention that he got that info from a specific source. He also tweeted this morning that there will not be a Vick signing today. Though he did say that Friday through Monday is now on his radar.

      Rich Eisen of the NFL Network also tweeted that the Bills had set a press conference up for 3:00 p.m. today, but then posted that there was no presser.

      While these are just rumors, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to believe the Bills would be interested in Vick. Ryan Fitzpatrick and Gibran Hamdan are the two quarterbacks listed behind starter Trent Edwards on the Bills’ depth chart and neither of them offers much long-term potential. Plus, the offseason signing of Terrell Owens proved that Buffalo isn’t afraid to take on potential distractions.

      But something to keep in mind (besides his dog fighting habits) is that Vick compiled a 15-16 record as a starter the last two years he was in the NFL. He’s also been out of football the past two seasons, is two years older and was also in prison during that time. Who knows what kind of shape this guy is in?

      If Schefter is reporting it, there’s a good chance that there’s some truth to the rumors, so we’ll just have to wait and see. That said, a team has more reasons not to sign Vick than they do to sign him, so it could be a while before the Bills or anyone else pull the trigger on the idea.

      Update: The Bills are reiterating that they don’t have any interest in Vick at this time.

      Ten second-year NFL breakout candidates

      Players like Matt Ryan, Chris Johnson and Joe Flacco have already pulled a seat up to the proverbially NFL dinner table after turning in solid rookie seasons. But which second-year players (who didn’t have great success in their rookie campaigns) are set for breakout seasons in 2009?

      Here are 10 that jump out to me:

      (Note: I consider players like Ryan, Johnson, Flacco, Jonathan Stewart, Matt Forte and Steve Slaton as already having breakout seasons, so you won’t find them on this list.)

      In no particular order:

      1. Darren McFadden, RB, Raiders
      Justin Fargas is a favorite of head coach Tom Cable’s in Oakland, but the Raiders didn’t select McFadden with the fourth overall pick in last year’s draft not to take full advantage of his talents. Thus far this summer, the Raiders have lined McFadden up not only at running back, but also at receiver and even quarterback. With Cable calling the offensive plays this season, McFadden is set to see plenty of opportunities to excel in Oakland’s offense and as long as he can stay healthy (a turf toe injury slowed him down last season) the former top 5 pick could emerge as the Raiders’ most potent offensive weapon. The one part of his game that he’ll need to improve on, however, is his ability to run between the tackles. If he can’t, the hard-running Fargas will steal plenty of McFadden’s touches this season.
