Ryan Leaf to turn himself in after being arrested at border

Customs agents arrested former NFL quarterback and colossal moron Ryan Leaf on Wednesday as he returned to the United States from Canada. He had been wanted in Texas for drug and burglary charges, posted $45,000 bond and will now return to Texas to turn himself in.

What’s amazing (besides the fact that this guy was once considered a franchise NFL quarterback) is that he was picked up coming back into the United States. If he wanted to evade authorities, why wouldn’t he just take up shop in Canada and call it a day? Or better yet, how about he not try to steal prescription drugs from one of the players he used to coach at West Texas A&M by breaking into the player’s house? What an idiot.

How does something like this happen? How does a guy go from being one of the best quarterback prospects to enter an NFL draft, to being wanted in the state of Texas for something as stupid as breaking into someone’s house in attempt to steal prescription drugs? It’s mind-boggling.

Apparently he went and successfully completed drug rehab. Great – now a little jail time might do him some good. Dude needs to mellow out a little.

Former mountain biking world champion caught with 200 pounds of pot

The Associated Press is reporting that former mountain biking world champion Melissa “Missy” Giove was arrested Thursday on federal drug charges after authorities seized more than 200 pounds of marijuana from a truck she was driving in upstate New York.

Apparently Missy had just 220 pounds of pot in the back of the truck, but close to 400 pounds altogether including at her home. Her and a man named Eric Canori were planning on distributing more than 100 kilos of the Mary Jane.

Giove was the downhill world champion in 1994 and won World Cup season titles in 1997 and 1998, then won national titles in 1999, 2000 and 2001. She was one of the sports’ first female stars and retired in 2003.

In a related story, a truckload carrying over 200 pounds of Cool Ranch Doritos and 600 kilos of Funyuns were also seized in connection with Missy’s arrest.

Lawson, Williams & Henderson — moving up?

On his draft buzz blog, Chad Ford lists a few guys that may crash the top 10 next week.

North Carolina’s Ty Lawson has taken some abuse during the draft workout process, but it sounds as though teams are starting to come around. Lawson was, without question, the most productive point guard in the draft. Teams are skeptical because of his size and his style of play. But he’s been great in several recent workouts according to sources and apparently is in the mix with the Knicks at No. 8 if guys like Curry and Hill are off the board. Lawson also is still on the board at No. 10 to Milwaukee and the Pacers at No. 13 and the Sixers at No. 17 are also giving him a serious look. If Lawson ends up crashing the top 10, that would probably push either Holiday or Flynn out.

Louisville’s Terrence Williams is another player who is a potential lottery crasher. The Warriors have been high on Williams all year and will seriously consider him at No. 7. And Williams also seems to have seriously moved into the mix with the Nets at No. 11 and the Bobcats at No. 12. In fact, sources say that Williams has been invited back to Charlotte for a second time. One league source says that he’s leapfrogged Duke’s Gerald Henderson on Larry Brown’s board.

The final guy to watch is Henderson, who is getting a serious look in New York, Toronto and Charlotte. In each case I think there are players ahead of him on each team’s draft boards, but under certain scenarios I think he could go 8 to 12. However, if DeMar DeRozan is on the board at No. 9, I think he’s going ahead of Henderson in Toronto. And, if the source on Williams is to be believed, it’s possible that Henderson could slide out of the lottery.

Regular readers know I’ve been high on Lawson throughout this entire process despite all the negative feelings towards his game. Given his production and performance at North Carolina, I think he’d be a steal for a team in the middle of the first round looking for a point guard. The Pacers (#13), the Sixers (#16) and the Hawks (#19) all would be good fits. I’d be surprised if he cracked the top 12, as the Bobcats (#12), the Nets (#11), the Bucks (#10) and the Raptors (#9) already have their point guards. (Though Milwaukee may be in the market if they are dumb enough to let Ramon Sessions walk.)

As for Williams, he’s not much of a scorer, but he can play defense, distribute the ball and rebound really well for a wing. I’d still take Henderson over Williams because he is just as athletic and has proved that he can improve his offensive game. Williams has the better handle and is the better passer. There is a lot of margin for error when trying to predict where these guys will go because this draft is relatively thin at shooting guard. The only true shooting guard in the top 10 is Harden. Curry, Evans and Holiday are considered to be combo guards, and DeRozan looks like a swingman. Then there are Henderson, Williams, Budinger and Ellington to round out the first round.

Cubs eyeing Pedro Martinez?

According to a report by the Chicago Tribune, the Cubs sent a scout to watch Pedro Martinez work out in the Dominican Republic and are considering signing the veteran right-hander to add to their rotation. Apparently the Rays are another team that has shown interest in Martinez.

Unless Martinez can hit with runners in scoring position, I don’t see how he could have an immediate impact for the Cubs. Starting pitching isn’t the problem right now for Chicago – offense is. And while adding another arm to a rotation that features the oft-injured Rich Harden isn’t a bad idea, I’m a little surprised the Cubs aren’t popping up in more trade rumors involving bats.

Right now the Cubs are either in denial about their offensive woes or they’re just being extremely patient. Aramis Ramirez (shoulder) should come off the DL soon, which will certainly help, but if the club is simply holding out for players like Alfonso Soriano and Geovany Soto to catch fire, then they could be waiting awhile. (It would be nice if Milton Bradley resembled a baseball player once in awhile, too.)

There are worse ideas than the Cubs adding a healthy Martinez to their starting rotation. But I wonder if this is just the club’s way of trying to appease the fans after failing to trade for Jake Peavy and not an attempt to turn things around. Because if the Cubs were really trying to address needs, then they’d be concentrating on adding bats right now – not arms.

Raul Ibanez placed on DL

In a rather surprising move, the Phillies have placed outfielder Raul Ibanez on the disabled list with a strained left groin. Though Ibanez missed a start last weekend with a sore Achilles tendon, there had been no mention of a groin injury.

Ibanez is hitting .312 with 22 homers and 59 RBIs. He is second in the National League in both home runs and RBIs. His RBI total ranks fourth in the Major Leagues.

He has struggled recently, though, and seemed to have a little trouble running at times in Wednesday’s 7-1 loss to the Blue Jays.

Ibanez said on Sunday that he has had a sore left Achilles because of some bad shoes, but insisted it was not serious.

Ibanez has hit .194 (6-for-31) in his past seven games, although he also has three home runs and five RBIs in that span.

Fantasy owners had been waiting for Ibanez’s production to come down and it looks like it’s starting to happen, although maybe that’s more due to his injuries. Maybe the time off will do the 37-year old some good and he’ll come back slugging again in a week or two.
