Vick and Anderson are possible options for Vikings…I guess.

It looks like the St. Paul Pioneer Press is slinging crap against the wall this week just to see if it will stick:

If the Minnesota Vikings are unable to land free agent Brett Favre, and if they’re still intent on a quarterback upgrade, the only options at this juncture would seem Michael Vick, who could be available after his prison release in time for training camp in July, or perhaps Derek Anderson in a trade with Cleveland.

Yeah, or the Vikings could just go with what they already have in Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels, the latter of which they gave up a draft pick for to acquire this offseason.

I fully expected the writer to continue with his speculation of the Vikings being interested in Vick or Anderson but the above paragraph is all he wrote. So essentially there is no basis for him even mentioning Vick and Anderson as possibilities for the Vikings, outside of the fact that they might not land Favre.

Must be a slow sports day with no new Favre updates.

Cubs’ Ramirez seperates shoulder, out 4-to-6 weeks

Cubs’ third baseman Aramis Ramirez separated his shoulder making a diving catch during Chicago’s 3-2 loss to the Brewers on Friday night and is expected to miss the next 4-to-6 weeks.

Ironically, the Cubs traded outfielder Joey Gathright to the Orioles in exchange for infielder Ryan Freel earlier in the day, which at least takes a little of the sting out of losing Ramirez. Freel does have experience playing third base and will likely split time there with Aaron Miles and Mike Fontenot in Ramirez’s absence.

The loss of A-Ram is a tough blow considering the Cubs just placed ace Carlos Zambrano on the disabled list less than a week ago due to a hamstring injury. Ramirez was hitting .364 with four home runs and 16 RBI before the injury, so Chicago will not only be without their No. 1 pitcher for the next couple weeks, but also one of their prominent bats.

The Cubs were 2.5 games back of the Cardinals entering Saturday’s action.

Friday MMA Review 5/8

Here’s a weekly rundown of MMA content from Ben Goldstein of CagePotato.com:

– Gina Carano (above photo) looks pretty hot as a pin-up girl.

– Toby Imada pulled off the most epic submission in MMA history against Jorge Masvidal at last weekend’s Bellator event.

– Hatsu Hioki, Marlon Sandro, Michihiro Omigawa, and Masanori Kanehara advanced to the semi-finals of Sengoku’s featherweight grand prix.

– Team U.S. and Team U.K. split a pair of quarterfinal fights, while a bounty offered for knocked-out teeth hilariously backfired on Wednesday’s episode of The Ultimate Fighter. Plus, will Rampage Jackson return for season 10?

– With Houston Alexander’s hand injury, UFC 98 becomes the second-most-cursed card in UFC history. Nevertheless, the show must go on, and Matt Serra has taken over video-blogging duties to promote it.

Two new people will be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame the day before UFC 100 in July. The smart money’s on Charles “Mask” Lewis and Chuck Liddell.

– Speaking of UFC 100, a new viral effort has been launched to get the crowd to chant “Fedor!” immediately following the Brock Lesnar/Frank Mir main event, pretty much just to screw with Dana White.

– Despite getting KTFO’d, Benji Radach is appealing his April 11th Strikeforce loss to Scott Smith.

– Your chance to win an all-expenses-paid trip to UFC 98 from CagePotato.com ends on Monday!

Report: Vikings waiting on X-rays to decide whether or not to sign Favre

What a surprise – it turns out that Brett Favre could still be Minnesota bound.

According to a report by ESPN.com, the Vikings are apparently evaluating X-rays that Favre had taken on his injured throwing arm to determine whether or not to pursue signing him..

A source close to the situation told ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap on Friday that X-rays of Favre’s right shoulder — he has pain resulting from a torn biceps tendon — have been sent to the Vikings and that the X-rays are in the process of being evaluated. If it is determined by Favre’s and the Vikings’ medical people that he needs anything less than “major” surgery on his shoulder, Favre will un-retire to play for the Vikings, the source said.

If “major” surgery is necessary, Favre will remain retired, the source said.

The news comes on the day after Yahoo! Sports reported that the 39-year-old Favre told Vikings coach Brad Childress he would remain retired.

Bus Cook, Favre’s agent, told ESPN’s Rachel Nichols on Friday that he did not know of any X-rays being sent to Minnesota.

Why would Yahoo! Sports report that Favre told the Vikings he’s planning on staying retired, only to have ESPN come out the next day and say that the Vikings are basing their decision on whether or not to sign him on his X-rays? Something doesn’t add up here.

Either way, as I wrote yesterday when the Yahoo! Sports report broke, until I don’t see Favre’s frumpy ass in purple and white by kickoff of Week 1, I’m going to assume that he’ll be a Viking in 2009.

A-Rod set to return to Yankees’ lineup tonight

The New York Post reports that Yankees’ third baseman Alex Rodriguez is almost certain to make his 2009 debut on Friday night after missing over a month recovering from hip surgery.

The plan is for Alex Rodriguez to be in the lineup as the third baseman tomorrow night in Baltimore, the Post has learned.

A conference call was scheduled between Rodriguez and members of the Yankee front office for this afternoon, and A-Rod was going to tell the organization how he felt and what his preference was for when to return from hip surgery. But the understanding going into the game, according to two sources, was that if there were no problems in today’s intra-squad game, then he would rejoin the Yanks tomorrow and play.

Rodriguez went 0-for-2 with two walks and played three innings of defense in the intra-squad game.

Rodriguez had hip surgery on May 9.

Even though he’s going to create a media distraction, the Yankees need this guy in the lineup. Xavier Nady is done for the year (although Nick Swisher is filling in admirably), Jorge Posada was just placed on the disabled list and Mark Teixeira is hitting below the Mendoza Line. The quicker A-Fraud starts hitting, the sooner the Yankees can stop skidding into the basement of the AL East. Although that would mean that their expensive pitching staff would have to stop serving up gopher balls, too.
