Ryan Leaf to turn himself in after being arrested at border

Customs agents arrested former NFL quarterback and colossal moron Ryan Leaf on Wednesday as he returned to the United States from Canada. He had been wanted in Texas for drug and burglary charges, posted $45,000 bond and will now return to Texas to turn himself in.

What’s amazing (besides the fact that this guy was once considered a franchise NFL quarterback) is that he was picked up coming back into the United States. If he wanted to evade authorities, why wouldn’t he just take up shop in Canada and call it a day? Or better yet, how about he not try to steal prescription drugs from one of the players he used to coach at West Texas A&M by breaking into the player’s house? What an idiot.

How does something like this happen? How does a guy go from being one of the best quarterback prospects to enter an NFL draft, to being wanted in the state of Texas for something as stupid as breaking into someone’s house in attempt to steal prescription drugs? It’s mind-boggling.

Apparently he went and successfully completed drug rehab. Great – now a little jail time might do him some good. Dude needs to mellow out a little.

Former mountain biking world champion caught with 200 pounds of pot

The Associated Press is reporting that former mountain biking world champion Melissa “Missy” Giove was arrested Thursday on federal drug charges after authorities seized more than 200 pounds of marijuana from a truck she was driving in upstate New York.

Apparently Missy had just 220 pounds of pot in the back of the truck, but close to 400 pounds altogether including at her home. Her and a man named Eric Canori were planning on distributing more than 100 kilos of the Mary Jane.

Giove was the downhill world champion in 1994 and won World Cup season titles in 1997 and 1998, then won national titles in 1999, 2000 and 2001. She was one of the sports’ first female stars and retired in 2003.

In a related story, a truckload carrying over 200 pounds of Cool Ranch Doritos and 600 kilos of Funyuns were also seized in connection with Missy’s arrest.

Cubs eyeing Pedro Martinez?

According to a report by the Chicago Tribune, the Cubs sent a scout to watch Pedro Martinez work out in the Dominican Republic and are considering signing the veteran right-hander to add to their rotation. Apparently the Rays are another team that has shown interest in Martinez.

Unless Martinez can hit with runners in scoring position, I don’t see how he could have an immediate impact for the Cubs. Starting pitching isn’t the problem right now for Chicago – offense is. And while adding another arm to a rotation that features the oft-injured Rich Harden isn’t a bad idea, I’m a little surprised the Cubs aren’t popping up in more trade rumors involving bats.

Right now the Cubs are either in denial about their offensive woes or they’re just being extremely patient. Aramis Ramirez (shoulder) should come off the DL soon, which will certainly help, but if the club is simply holding out for players like Alfonso Soriano and Geovany Soto to catch fire, then they could be waiting awhile. (It would be nice if Milton Bradley resembled a baseball player once in awhile, too.)

There are worse ideas than the Cubs adding a healthy Martinez to their starting rotation. But I wonder if this is just the club’s way of trying to appease the fans after failing to trade for Jake Peavy and not an attempt to turn things around. Because if the Cubs were really trying to address needs, then they’d be concentrating on adding bats right now – not arms.

Raul Ibanez placed on DL

In a rather surprising move, the Phillies have placed outfielder Raul Ibanez on the disabled list with a strained left groin. Though Ibanez missed a start last weekend with a sore Achilles tendon, there had been no mention of a groin injury.

Ibanez is hitting .312 with 22 homers and 59 RBIs. He is second in the National League in both home runs and RBIs. His RBI total ranks fourth in the Major Leagues.

He has struggled recently, though, and seemed to have a little trouble running at times in Wednesday’s 7-1 loss to the Blue Jays.

Ibanez said on Sunday that he has had a sore left Achilles because of some bad shoes, but insisted it was not serious.

Ibanez has hit .194 (6-for-31) in his past seven games, although he also has three home runs and five RBIs in that span.

Fantasy owners had been waiting for Ibanez’s production to come down and it looks like it’s starting to happen, although maybe that’s more due to his injuries. Maybe the time off will do the 37-year old some good and he’ll come back slugging again in a week or two.

Bears say no on Marshall, but Burress remains an option

According to a report in the Chicago Sun Times, Bears’ GM Jerry Angelo is giving the idea of trading for Brandon Marshall a big fat “no,” but signing Plaxico Burress still remains an option.

Smith, who can’t comment on players under contract with other teams, harshly said ”no” when Brandon Marshall’s name was brought up. Marshall has requested a trade out of Denver, and a reunion with Cutler is a natural storyline, but Marshall has a checkered off-field history, is coming off hip surgery and would require substantial compensation to acquire. Go ahead and rule him out.

Burress, though, remains a possibility.

”Plaxico Burress is a good football player,” Smith said. ”Of course, we all know that. We keep all of our options open. We’re constantly evaluating all the players who are out there. But I feel good about our team that we have right now, and I feel good about the receivers we have right now.”

I doubt that the Bears would be interested in one malcontent (Burress), but not the other (Marshall). Chances are, they’re interested in both, but there are more factors involving trading for Marshall, including putting together enough trade compensation to lure him out of Denver.

If they signed Burress, it would probably only be to a one-year deal for a minimal amount of money. If he acts up or goes to jail, then Chicago could part with him at the end of the ’09 season and not have to worry about carrying his baggage into 2010.
