      Bonds says he’s proud of McGwire

      Barry Bonds says he’s proud of friend Mark McGwire for admitting to his PED use back in January of this year.

      From ESPN.com:

      “I have a really good friendship with Mark McGwire. I’m proud of him,” the 45-year-old Bonds, back in the Bay Area for a reunion at AT&T Park of the Giants’ 2000 NL West champion team, said when asked what he thought of McGwire’s January admission. “We’ve had a great relationship throughout our entire lives and throughout our career. I’m proud of what he did. I’m happy for him.”

      He appeared to be in great shape and said he is down to about 225 pounds from his playing weight of 238.

      “I’ve just been working out a lot, that’s all. I work out all the time,” Bonds said. “It’s been in my genes my whole life. I just don’t work out as hard anymore. I don’t lift as heavy weights anymore to be bulky. I don’t know, I’ve got that Hollywood look.”

      I’ve got that Hollywood look? Does anyone else need to vomit or am I the only one?

      People love to talk about “Manny being Manny” when it comes to the antics of Manny Ramirez, but ManRam has nothing on Bonds. This is a man that will look the media dead in the face and tell them that he’s proud of Mark McGwire for admitting his PED use, as if he shouldn’t have done the same thing long ago. Barry is one of those people that has subscribed to his own lies for so long that he actually believes in them now. It would be funny if it weren’t so sad.

      MLB Roundup: The Doc, the Panda & the Tiger

      Phillies 2, Astros 1
      It’s about time Roy Halladay produced a shutout – I mean, it’s been two games for crib’s sake. The “Doc” gave up just one run on seven innings while striking out eight in nine innings on Sunday to help the Phillies beat the Astros, 2-1. Houston’s feeble offense once again mustered very little run support for Roy Oswalt, who dropped to 0-2 on the season after losing earlier last week to Tim Lincecum. The Astros are now 0-6 on the year under new manager Don’t-worry-about-his-name-because-it-won’t-matter-soon-anyway.

      Tigers 9, Indians 8
      Justin Verlander looked like feces again for a second straight outing, allowing six runs on six hits and surrendering a grand slam to somebody named Luis Valbuena. (I checked, he’s actually on Cleveland’s roster.) Even when Verlander did settle down, he still only struck out three batters and wasn’t his usual dominant self. But it’s still early, so Tiger fans have nothing to worry about yet. Detroit overcame a 7-3 deficit in the sixth inning by scratching across six runs in the final three frames to improve to 5-1 on the year. Chris Perez played the goat for the Tribe by throwing a wild pitch to give up the go-ahead run in the bottom of the ninth. He gave up three runs on three hits in his one inning of relief.

      Somebody woke up the Kung Fu Panda on Sunday. Pablo Sandoval, who hasn’t looked sharp at the plate or in the field to start the season, went 3-for-4 with two RBI, three runs scored and one mammoth two-run homer (his first of the year). He also made a great catch on a foul play hit by Jason Heyward earlier in the game where he almost tumbled over the railing of the Giants’ dugout. Sandoval bailed out Tim Lincecum, who only struck out 10 batters in seven innings to rack up his second win of the year.

      Steelers make statement by trading Holmes to Jets

      In an obvious statement move, the Steelers traded former Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes to the Jets for a fifth-round pick and a half bag of stale Cheetos that were found in the bottom drawer of Rex Ryan’s office desk.

      Just to put the trade in perspective, the Jets parted with two players (receiver Chansi Stuckey and linebacker Jason Trusnik), plus two undisclosed draft picks when they acquired Braylon Edwards from the Browns last October. And there’s no question that Holmes has more talent in his right pinkie toe than Edwards has in his entire body.

      Make no mistake: Holmes is a top-flight receiver that can stretch the field and be productive in any offense. He’s a freaking coconut (a coconut that may be suspended the first four games next season), but he’s a dangerous deep threat and a true playmaker in every sense of the word. The Jets got a steal in this trade and have gone a long way in upgrading their passing game for Mark Sanchez. Assuming Edwards doesn’t throw a tantrum now that he won’t be the main guy, he and Holmes could do some damage together in the Jets’ offense.

      That said, the Steelers don’t care what they got in return for Holmes because it’s clear that they just wanted to rid themselves of the headache. It wasn’t about the compensation for them – it was about cutting their losses and dumping their mess on another team. They certainly failed to get value in this trade, but at least they don’t have to spend the rest of the offseason wondering whether or not Holmes will be suspended at the start of next season. They already have enough to worry about in Ben Roethlisberger – the other turd in their punchbowl this offseason.

      It’ll be interesting to see how this trade affects the Steelers’ draft. They vastly need to upgrade the interior of their offensive line, but Hines Ward, Mike Wallace, Antwaan Randle El and Limas Sweed aren’t going to get it done at receiver. They might not target a wideout with their first pick, but they’ll have to address the position at some point during the draft.

      Ben Roethlisberger won’t be charged

      Sources have told ESPN.com that Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will not be charged for sexual assault of a 20-year-old woman.

      Sources confirmed to ESPN’s Kelly Naqi that District Attorney Fred Bright will announce on Monday that charges will not be brought against Roethlisberger. Bright said in a statement Friday he has reviewed all the investigation reports and will hold a news conference at 2 p.m. ET Monday.
      Milledgeville police Chief Woodrow Blue said Wednesday his department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation had wrapped up their investigation into a 20-year-old college student’s claim that Roethlisberger sexually assaulted her early March 5 at a club in Milledgeville.

      It was the second time in a year that Roethlisberger has been accused of sexual misconduct. He also faces a lawsuit filed last July by a woman who says he raped her in 2008 at a Lake Tahoe hotel and casino, an allegation he denies. Roethlisberger has not been criminally charged in either case and has claimed counterdamages in the lawsuit.

      I wrote yesterday that I would have been surprised had Big Ben gotten into serious trouble. I’m not saying that he did or didn’t, but it seems like there isn’t enough proof that Roethlisberger sexually assaulted her and if the movie “Law Abiding Citizen” taught us anything, it’s that: it’s not what you know, it’s what you can prove. (That movie also taught us how to tunnel into prison, which was really, really sweet.)

      If Big Ben does escape charges, then he needs to re-evaluate how he’s spending his personal time. There will always be idiot, immature young women that thrust themselves onto athletes, movie stars and sports bloggers. And it’s apparent that Roethlisberger is one of the many morons that can’t help but take advantage of that. But if he wants to continue playing in Pittsburgh and in the NFL for that matter, he better stop putting himself in situations where he’s going to get in trouble.

      MLB Roundup: Red-hot Renteria, Lee’s bad news & the BoSox’s early woes

      Giants 5, Braves 4
      Quick, name the team with the best record in baseball. The Yankees? Sorry – they’re currently only .500. The answer would be the Giants, who have begun the year 4-0 after coming from behind to the beat the Braves 5-4 in 13 innings on Friday. Quick, name the hottest hitter in the league right now. If you said Albert Pujols, then punch yourself in the ear because you’re wrong. If you said Edgar Renteria, you’re right, but you probably only said that to be a wiseass – so the jokes on you. Renteria is batting an astonishing .688 to start the year after going 3-for-5 with a game-tying two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth, which helped San Fran erase a 4-2 deficit. I don’t know how Pablo Sandoval slimmed down and stole Renteria’s jersey without anyone seeing, but there’s no way that’s the real Edgar Renteria.

      Rangers 6, Mariners 2
      Nelson Cruz abused the Mariners on Friday, going 3-for-4 with a solo homer, two RBI and two runs scored in the Rangers’ 6-2 victory. Seattle is hitting .199 as a team and was 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position. It was the club’s fourth straight loss and making matters worse, it was revealed that Cliff Lee might not come off the disabled list until May now.

      Royals 4, Red Sox 3
      It’s early, but you know things are bad in Boston when they’re losing to Kansas City. Rick Ankiel (yes, that Rick Ankiel) hit a go-ahead two-run single off Daniel Bard in the eighth inning of the Royals’ 4-3 win over the BoSox on Friday night. It was the fourth hit of the night for Ankiel, who also hit a solo home run and drove in three runs. Not a bad night for the newcomer, who helped sent Boston spiraling to a 1-3 start.
