Reds’ pitcher Mike Leake arrested for shoplifting

Mike Leake and Winona Ryder now have more in common today than they did at the start of the week after the Reds’ pitcher was caught stealing $59.88 worth of T-shirts at a Macy’s.
Cincinnati.com has the details.
Reds pitcher Mike Leake was charged with misdemeanor theft hours before Monday’s game after being accused of removing security tags from six T-shirts at a Downtown store and leaving without paying for them, store security and police said.
Employees at Macy’s called police after they said Leake removed the tags from six American Rag T-shirts, valued at $59.88, and left the store with them.
The incident was captured by security cameras, police documents state.
Leake, 23, was arrested at the 505 Vine St. store at 2 p.m. and booked into the jail at 2:32 p.m. He was charged with theft, a misdemeanor carrying a maximum jail term of 180 days. Leake is scheduled for an initial court appearance at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
For those who were wondering, Leake received a $2.3 million signing bonus as a first-round draft pick in 2009 and is set to make $425,000 for the 2011 season. So obviously Mikey has a problem with shoplifting or he lost a bet. If I were him, I’m telling the media that I was honoring a bet I lost over the winter, I’m a fool and it’ll never happen again.
The Reds have described the situation as a “club issue” and are dealing with the matter in-house, which is good of them. They need to let the legal process play out and then figure out the appropriate punishment when the time comes. This will all blow over soon, although Leake won’t live this down for a while.
Here’s hoping one of his teammates is taping a photo of Ryder to Leake’s locker right now…
MLB Roundup: The Doc, the Panda & the Tiger

Phillies 2, Astros 1
It’s about time Roy Halladay produced a shutout – I mean, it’s been two games for crib’s sake. The “Doc” gave up just one run on seven innings while striking out eight in nine innings on Sunday to help the Phillies beat the Astros, 2-1. Houston’s feeble offense once again mustered very little run support for Roy Oswalt, who dropped to 0-2 on the season after losing earlier last week to Tim Lincecum. The Astros are now 0-6 on the year under new manager Don’t-worry-about-his-name-because-it-won’t-matter-soon-anyway.
Tigers 9, Indians 8
Justin Verlander looked like feces again for a second straight outing, allowing six runs on six hits and surrendering a grand slam to somebody named Luis Valbuena. (I checked, he’s actually on Cleveland’s roster.) Even when Verlander did settle down, he still only struck out three batters and wasn’t his usual dominant self. But it’s still early, so Tiger fans have nothing to worry about yet. Detroit overcame a 7-3 deficit in the sixth inning by scratching across six runs in the final three frames to improve to 5-1 on the year. Chris Perez played the goat for the Tribe by throwing a wild pitch to give up the go-ahead run in the bottom of the ninth. He gave up three runs on three hits in his one inning of relief.
Giants 6, Braves 3
Somebody woke up the Kung Fu Panda on Sunday. Pablo Sandoval, who hasn’t looked sharp at the plate or in the field to start the season, went 3-for-4 with two RBI, three runs scored and one mammoth two-run homer (his first of the year). He also made a great catch on a foul play hit by Jason Heyward earlier in the game where he almost tumbled over the railing of the Giants’ dugout. Sandoval bailed out Tim Lincecum, who only struck out 10 batters in seven innings to rack up his second win of the year.

Reds name Leake fifth starter

And this is news…why? Well, because Mike Leake was taken with the eighth overall pick in last June’s draft and has yet to throw a pitch in the minors yet. Not one.
From ESPN.com:
The 22-year-old Leake beat out Travis Wood, a second-round pick in 2005, and Cuban defector Aroldis Chapman, who was hampered by lower back spasms late in spring training.
“There’s no words to describe it, right now,” said Leake, the former Arizona State star who was selected eighth overall in last June’s draft. “Maybe in a couple days.”
Chapman, who agreed to a $30.25 million, six-year deal in January, was optioned to Triple-A Louisville.
Granted, Leake will actually be reassigned to the minors before Cincinnati needs a fifth starter, but it’s still impressive that he made the big league club without spending at least a couple months in Triple A. Tim Lincecum, the Giants’ two-time Cy Young winner, even spent some time in the minors before he was called up to The Show.
