Randy Moss makes unbelievable catch

This is why Ty Law (who was sitting on his couch when the Jets called him to play cornerback for them just days before they faced the Patriots on Thursday night) shouldn’t be covering Randy Moss when the game is on the line:

That was simply a phenomenal catch, but I don’t think enough is being made about Matt Cassel’s throw. Not only does he avoid the sack, but he also point the ball where only Moss could catch it – while on the run no less. Great play.

And to be far, Law didn’t have bad coverage on Moss, but why allow him to get a free release off the line?

Do or die for the Jets Thursday in Foxboro?

Eric Mangini/Bill BelichickWeek 11 in the NFL kicks off Thursday night with a matchup between the Jets and the Patriots that could determine which team wins the AFC East. Both teams currently sit at 6-3, but New England holds the head-to-head advantage after beating the Jets 19-10 in Week 2.

Many are deeming this a must win for the Jets and given the circumstances, that’s hard to argue. Teams that can’t win in their own division are usually the ones looking from the outside in come playoff time. And with the Jets losing to the Pats earlier this season, there’s even more onus on victory tonight.

Unfortunately for the Jets, they’re going to see a very different Matt Cassel than they did in Week 2. Even though he led his team to victory, Cassel wasn’t asked to do too much in the offense when he first took over for Tom Brady earlier this season. But over the past month, Cassel has given Bill Belichick reason to believe he can open up the passing game more, which even means running the no-huddle at various points during games.

Of course, this matchup always has an added dynamic to it considering Belichick would rather piss glass than lose to Eric Mangini. And it’s about time Mangini puts a great game plan together and finally knock off Belichick on a national stage. Even though they’re currently 6-3, the Pats are down this year and Mangini needs to take advantage of the situation. It might be dramatic to suggest this, but Thursday night might be now or never for Mangini to finally put the screws to his old boss and claim the division.

Tonight should be interesting. Jet Favre is playing better than he did a couple weeks ago when he was turning the ball over like candy on Halloween and the NY defense has been very opportunistic lately. Both of these teams are playing vastly different than they did in Week 2 and it should be a great battle for those 34 people who have the NFL Network.

Top 10 Seasons by a Backup QB

RealClearSports.com ranks the top 10 seasons by a backup quarterback.

#3 Tom Brady, 2001 New England Patriots

Patriots 2001 Record Without Brady as Starter: 0-2

Patriots 2001 Record With Brady as Starter: 14-3

By now everyone’s heard the story: split time with Drew Henson while at Michigan, selected by the Patriots with the 199th overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft, took over for Drew Bledsoe in Week 2 of the 2001 campaign, went 11-3 the rest of the regular season, pulled off the biggest upset in Super Bowl history, was named the MVP in that game and now, seven years later, he has three rings, a league MVP award and is dating a supermodel.

#1 Kurt Warner, St. Louis Rams

Rams Before Warner: 4-12 in 1998

Rams 1999 Record With Warner as Starter: 16-3

In 1998, Kurt Warner was signed by the Rams and was sent to NFL Europe. In 1999 he was brought in as the backup to Trent Green. But when Green was injured in the third preseason game, Warner had to step in. No one gave the Rams a shot with a 28-year-old quarterback who had never taken a snap in the NFL. But Warner and the Rams surprised everyone with their “Greatest Show On Turf”. It took Warner no time to get acclimated to the system. He became the first quarterback to throw for 3 touchdowns in each of his first three NFL games. Warner won the NFL MVP that year as he threw for 4,353 yards and 41 touchdowns. In Super Bowl XXXIV Warner threw for a Super Bowl record 414 yards as the Rams beat the Titans, 23-16, and Warner was named the MVP.

The reason the site did this piece was because of Matt Cassel, who currently has the Pats at 6-3.

Kerry Collins For MVP?

Kerry CollinsWhile I was at the gym this morning, I caught some NFL highlights on ESPN including some of the taped commentary from Chris Berman and Tom Jackson. For the record, no one recaps games better than those two guys, not even the 11 or 12 characters on NBC, who just keep trying to outwit each other. Anyway, Jackson said something really, really intriguing. Something to the effect of that while no one is saying it out loud, you can make a case for Titans’ quarterback Kerry Collins for NFL MVP after nine games.

Now think about that for a minute. Yes, it’s a strange year in the NFL, and yes, the Titans are 9-0 and way out in front of the AFC pack. But when you first think about it, Collins in MVP conversations sounds ridiculous. He is somewhere toward the bottom of the pack in passing yards, with 1525 (169 per game in 8-plus games), with just 5 touchdown passes and 3 interceptions and a QB rating of just 78.8. But here’s the thing. Drew Brees is putting up Tom Brady/Peyton Manning type numbers, with 2985 yards, 17 TDs and 10 picks. But Brees’ Saints are 4-5 and bringing up the rear in the AFC South. Jay Cutler is second in passing yards with 2616, and his team is 5-4 (and leading a pathetic AFC West). In fact, in pure yardage, you have to scroll down to number 10 (Brett Favre) to find a QB with more than five wins. Eli Manning of the 8-1 Giants is 12th and has a QB rating of 88.8.

So throw the stats aside, and think purely in terms of MVP for a minute. Manning and Brandon Jacobs deserve consideration, because they lead an 8-1 team in the NFL’s toughest division. But the Giants have a whole team of great players and the G-men would still be very competitive if either of those guys missed a game or two. The Panthers are 7-2, but have also had many contributors. And among the teams that are 6-3 (Jets, Pats, Steelers, Ravens, Redskins, Bucs and Falcons), you can make a case for a handful of players–Favre, Clinton Portis, and Matt Ryan. But even Ryan has had help from Michael Turner and Roddy White and John Abraham.

Then look at the Titans themselves. Aside from Collins, you have LenDale White and Chris Johnson piling up yards behind a very underrated offensive line. You have Albert Haynesworth absolutely terrorizing offensive coordinators and Cortland Finnegan playing out of his mind. All of them Pro Bowl possibilities, but not really MVP material. Collins, though, stepped in for Vince Young and has been a steady hand leading a very talented team to an undefeated record so far. You can’t say the Titans would be better than maybe 5-4 with Young as the starter right now. 9-0 with the veteran Collins is the only number that should be mentioned in MVP talk at this point, and for that I have to say Tom Jackson is on to something.

Bookmark this page for when the real talk begins, and don’t forget you heard it here second.

Never bet against Bill Belichick and the Patriots following a loss

BenJarvus Green-EllisI don’t care if Tom Brady is playing quarterback or if it’s Rumplestilskin – Bill Belichick and the Patriots are tough to beat following a loss.

Case in point: Patriots 20, Bills 10. The final score looks close, but Buffalo added a touchdown late. New England was in command of this game the entire way as rookie BenJarvus Green-Ellis rushed for 105 yards and a touchdown. I don’t know if any team is better than the Pats are coming off a loss – especially one when they didn’t execute very well as was the case in their defeat at Indy last Sunday night.

After beating the Chargers to get to 5-1, the Bills have lost three in a row and have fallen back in the AFC East race. Turnovers have absolutely killed this team and one has to wonder if their fast start was nothing but a fluke considering they beat the Seahawks, Raiders, Rams and the suspect Jaguars and Raiders. But things get easier for them over the next couple weeks as they face the Browns, Chiefs and 49ers. Things look bleak for Buffalo, but the playoffs are still very much in the picture.
