      Are the Saints destined for 16-0?

      Unless you’re a Colts or Vikings fan, when you watch the Saints play, it makes you realize how bad your team actually is.

      The Saints carved up the Patriots on Monday night like a Ginsu knife slicing through warm butter. They racked up 480 yards of total offense, 367 passing yards and scored five touchdowns in route to a 38-17 blow out victory. The soon-to-be MVP award winner Drew Brees completed 18 of his 23 passing attempts for 371 yards and five touchdowns.

      What’s ironic about Monday night’s game is that the Patriots must have thought they were looking in the mirror watching the Saints stroll up and down the field on them for four quarters. It was just three years ago that New England was humiliating opponents with the greatest of ease and compiling a perfect 16-0 regular season record.

      In 2007, nobody thought the Patriots would lose and now I have a hard time believing anyone will knock off this Saints team. Sean Payton’s playcalling is impeccable, Brees is playing like a man possessed and the defense is incredibly opportunistic. New England was supposed to serve as the biggest test of the year for New Orleans and the game wasn’t even close outside of a 7-3 score in the first quarter (that was the first and only time the Patriots led).

      The Saints wrap up the season with road trips Washington, Atlanta and Carolina, as well as home games against Dallas and Tampa Bay. With Chris Redman now under center for the Falcons, the only real threat to the Saints’ march to perfection is the Cowboys and New Orleans will play them in the Superdome, where they’re practically unbeatable.

      Considering Minnesota is breathing down their necks for the top spot in the NFC, the Saints still have plenty to play for, which means we could be seeing the second 16-0 team in only three years.

      Saints looking for ultimate respect on Monday night

      The New Orleans Saints have done everything right so far. They’re averaging over 35 points a game, they’ve played well defensively and they haven’t lost a game.

      The Saints don’t need anyone’s respect because they’ve earned it to this point. But beat the Patriots tonight and they’ll go from Super Bowl contenders to Super Bowl favorites.

      Even though they didn’t make the playoffs last season, the Pats are still the gold standard in terms of how teams measure themselves. Beat New England and you don’t need anything more in terms of confidence. Lose to New England and you might find out how far you still have to go in order to compete with the best.

      Personally, I think the Saints will come out victorious tonight. While the Falcons and Panthers gave them somewhat of a scare, no team has come close to beating the Saints in New Orleans. The team feeds off the energy of the Superdome and it’s hard for opponents to reach the same emotional level that the Saints do when they play at home.

      That said, Bill Belichick is still one of the greatest game planners in the game and if anyone is going to figure out a way to slow down Sean Payton’s offense, it’s Belichick. Even if New England doesn’t have the personnel to stop Drew Brees and company (which they don’t), Belichick will still put his players in the best position to win.

      I’d be shocked if the game tonight doesn’t live up to its hype. It’s going to be fun to see if Belichick and Tom Brady can march into New Orleans and earn a win, or if the Saints will rise to the challenge and overcome the most elite team on their regular season schedule.

      NFL Week 11 COY Power Rankings

      Once again we can’t ignore the two guys who have their teams at 10-0. Beyond that, there are a few others who are still overachieving, including Josh McDaniels, who brought his team back from the dead last night with a feisty effort against the Giants. Meanwhile, is anyone starting to sense that Jeff Fisher may be on our radar here? If you start 0-6 then win four straight and start to sniff any chance at the playoffs, that is just mind-blowing. It’s safe to say that if he does bring his Titans all the way back, it may be even more impressive than 16-0 would be.

      1. Jim Caldwell, Indianapolis Colts—They just beat the Patriots and Ravens back to back, and are absolutely going to coast to a first round bye. However, they need to finish the job this time as they did three seasons ago.

      2. Sean Payton, New Orleans Saints—Finally the Saints dominated in a game they had to dominate. Now they face their biggest test of the season at home Monday night against the Patriots. Both offenses are so explosive that I’m fully expecting 80 points between the teams. And if Payton’s Saints win, he will have earned his spot here again.

      3. Marvin Lewis, Cincinnati Bengals—A heartbreaking loss in Oakland was a devastating blow, but the Steelers and Ravens also lost. Now, Lewis has a chance for his team to be 6-0 in the division by beating the Browns at home Sunday. Can he do it? Does Howdy Doody have a wooden butt?

      4. Brad Childress, Minnesota Vikings—His team is 9-1 heading into Sunday’s game against Chicago, and if he wins that one, as he should, Childress will continue to remain on this short list.

      5. Josh McDaniels, Denver Broncos—After being 6-0 and losing four straight in horrible fashion, McDaniels and his potty mouth brought his team back from the dead last night. That was impressive (the comeback, as well as the mouth). They will be a tough out for someone in the playoffs, assuming they can still get there.

      Honorable mention: Ken Whisenhunt, Cardinals; Jack Del Rio, Jaguars, Jeff Fisher, Titans; Bill Belichick, Patriots

      NFL Week 11 MVP Power Rankings

      Peyton Manning and Drew Brees have led their teams to 10-0 records, but Brett Favre did not hurt his chances with an efficient day last week against Seattle. I read in USA Today this past week that Favre’s numbers are not impressive because of his competition and they gave Wes Welker and Jared Allen more props. Baloney….you can’t ignore Favre’s value to his team, at all.

      1. Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts—He did just enough to beat a tough Baltimore team, and did not really hurt his standing here in the process.

      2. Brett Favre, Minnesota Vikings—Against Seattle, he was 22 of 25 (career high 88 %) with 4 TDs and no picks. For those of you keeping score at home, Favre has 21 touchdowns and 3 interceptions on the season, and his team is a win or two away from clinching a bye.

      3. Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints—Just 187 yards against the Bucs, but with 3 more scores and no picks. And like Manning, you just can’t ignore the 10-0 start.

      4. Chris Johnson, Tennessee Titans—What the Titans are doing after starting 0-6 is borderline spectacular. And this guy is probably the primary reason. He padded his NFL-leading rushing yardage with another 151 against Houston last Monday night and is probably the most feared RB in the league right now.

      5. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers—We might be cheating here by including what he did Thursday, but still…..despite getting sacked 44 times this season, Rodgers has 22 TDs and just 5 picks and has thrown for 3136 yards. And he has his team back in the playoff race when everyone was counting them out a few weeks back.

      Decade Debate: 6 Greatest Sports Rivalries

      The word rivalry is defined as “competition for the same objective or superiority in the same field.” Rivalries exist in all facets of life, but they are no more apparent than in the world of sport. With the end of the decade looming, here are the six most intense rivalries of the last ten years.

      6. Tiger Woods vs. Phil Mickelson

      Competition between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson may not produce the mystique that Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus once did, but their rivalry has been exciting nonetheless. Without Tiger Woods, professional golf’s popularity would be a mere morsel of what it is today. The man has won 14 majors, holds his own tournament (the AT&T National), designed two beautiful courses, is the only golfer with his own video game, and garners public intrigue on the same level as world leaders. Still, his status as figurehead of professional golf wouldn’t have any merit without some stiff competition. Enter Phil Mickelson, Tiger’s only adversary with any staying power. When Mickelson won the 2000 Buick Invitational, he also officially ended Tiger’s streak of consecutive tournament wins at six. Over the years, Mickelson would hire Butch Harmon, Tiger’s former coach, and joke about Tiger’s use of “inferior equipment.” Still, their rivalry always remained amicable, even as Phil won his first major in ’04 (The Masters), the PGA Championship in ’05 another Green Jacket in ’06. During this year’s Masters, Tiger and Mickelson were finally paired together in a major event. Trudging down the final back nine at Augusta, the two golfers put on a show that thankfully lived up to the hype. –- Christopher Glotfelty
