NFL Week 9 MVP power rankings

It’s getting more and more crowded at the top in these power rankings. It seems like each week, someone new steps up and tried to claim a nomination or spot on this list. That’s life in the 2010 NFL season. Here are the MVP rankings for this week….and since there was a game Thursday, we have to take it into account:

1. Roddy White, Atlanta Falcons—On pace for 125 catches, 1660 yards and 12 TDs

2. Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts—Who is he even throwing to? Yet still on pace for almost 5000 yards

3. Clay Matthews, Green Bay Packers—11 sacks at mid-point with a shot to break Michael Strahan’s single-season record

4. Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons—The Falcons are the first 7-win team (thanks to a Thursday nighter) and Ryan helped lead them to victory against Baltimore

5. Arian Foster, Houston Texans—Exactly where did this dude come from? He’s carried the ball 157 times and is averaging 5.5 yards per attempt.

6. Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers—He has even less warm bodies than Manning to throw to, yet keeps putting numbers up.

7. Michael Vick, Philadelphia Eagles—With all due respect to Kevin Kolb, the Eagles are a playoff team with Vick, spectators without him.

8. Osi Umenyiora, New York Giants—The sacks leader on a D-line that leads the league in knocking out quarterbacks

9. Hakeem Nicks, New York Giants—Leads all wide receivers in TDs

10. Tom Brady, New England Patriots—It’s not so much the numbers, it’s the way this dude leads his team week after week—and they are looking pretty good.

Ravens only have themselves to blame for loss to Falcons – not refs

Some will focus on Michael Jenkins’ catch on a 3rd and 10 that wasn’t overturned by replay. Others will talk about the pass interference call on Tavares Gooden.

Most will fixate on Roddy White’s push-off.

But they shouldn’t. The Ravens didn’t lose to the Falcons on Thursday night because of the refs. They lost because they were dominated for most of the night and couldn’t catch a break or two down the stretch.

Here’s the way I would tally the final drive of Atlanta’s dramatic 26-21 win:

Jenkins’ Reception: It was a catch. The second replay showed that Jenkins kept a kung fu grip on the ball with his fingers and secured it while getting both feet down.

Pass Interference Call: I’m surprised Gooden didn’t get stopped at the Atlanta airport and picked up for the molestation of Tony Gonzalez. It was a good call – Gooden was draped all over him.

White’s Push-Off: It was clear as day – the ref missed it. I think a stiff wind could have knocked Josh Wilson down, but nevertheless White pushed off and it was a bad no call. He should have been flagged, the Falcons should have been backed up and who knows – maybe Baltimore is 7-2 and Atlanta is 6-3.

But you know what? The Ravens have nobody to blame but themselves and here’s why:

Ravens (6-2) @ Falcons (6-2), Thursday, 8:20PM ET
The best game on the Week 10 schedule and nobody will get to see if because it’ll be on the NFL Network. What a shame. The Falcons are 4-0 at home this year and have only lost once at the Georgia Dome when Matt Ryan starts. The Falcons’ secondary better be up for the challenge because the Ravens definitely have an advantage against the 26th overall pass defense in the league. Atlanta has the sixth-best run defense in the league but if it can’t stop Joe Flacco and Anquan Boldin then it’ll be a long night in the dirty south.
CURRENT ODDS: FALCONS –1

Patriots (6-2) @ Steelers (6-2), Sunday, 8:20PM ET
After that debacle last week with the Cowboys in Green Bay, NBC deserves this matchup on Sunday night. The Patriots may have been caught looking ahead to this game when they were crushed by the Browns last weekend in Cleveland. Bill Belichick’s teams usually don’t play poorly two weeks in a row but Pittsburgh’s defense has a way of making opponents look bad. That said, the Steelers have a mess of injuries on their offensive line and while New England isn’t a great pass rushing team, the Pats may have an advantage down in the trenches. No offense to the Colts or Ravens, but will this be a matchup of the AFC title game?
CURRENT ODDS: STEELERS –4.5

Eagles (5-3) @ Redskins (4-4), Monday, 8:30PM ET
If Donovan McNabb wants to shut his critics up and prove to Mike Shanahan that he should be the only one taking snaps this year for the Redskins, then a win against the Eagles on Monday night would go a long way. He beat his former team earlier in the season but that was when Michael Vick left the game with a rib injury. Assuming Vick stays healthy, things could play out much differently this Monday in D.C. Perhaps no quarterback is playing as well as Vick is now, but he’ll face a pissed off McNabb that had two weeks to stew over Shanahan’s ridiculous decision to play Rex Grossman in the final minutes of a loss to the Lions in Week 8. Buckle your chip strap because we’re about to have an ol’ fashioned NFC East showdown in Washington this week.
CURRENT ODDS: EAGLES -3

Titans (5-3) @ Dolphins (4-4), Sunday, 1:00PM ET
Outside of the Steelers, no team has attempted less passes this year than the Tennessee Titans. Considering Randy Moss can get a little cranky when he doesn’t get enough looks in the passing game, things might get a little tense in Tennessee over the remainder of the year. That said, there’s no doubt that Moss makes the Titans’ more dangerous and teams won’t be able to stack the box in order to take away Chris Johnson. They just better make sure that Moss sees his fair share of passes or else things could get real ugly in a hurry.
CURRENT ODDS: TITANS -1

Roddy White goes off on Bengals as Falcons’ offense finally rolls

ATLANTA - OCTOBER 24: Roddy White of the Atlanta Falcons stiff arms Chinedum Ndukwe of the Cincinnati Bengals at Georgia Dome on October 24, 2010 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

After turning in their worst performance of the year, the Falcons needed a rebound game. And after nearly giving the game away in the second half after building a 24-3 halftime lead, the Falcons hung on to beat the Bengals 39-32 on Sunday.

Roddy White had a massive day, recording 11 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns. He also added a two-point conversation, although it was his fumble that gave the Bengals life in the second half. Pacman Jones stripped White, then scooped it up for a 59-yard touchdown return to give Cincinnati a brief 25-24 lead.

But White’s 11-yard touchdown reception and two-point conversation early in the fourth quarter gave Atlanta the lead back at 32-25. Michael Turner added a 3-yard touchdown run with 4:33 left on the clock and even though the Bengals got to within one score after a Chad Ochocinco 8-yard touchdown pass with under two minutes remaining, a last-second desperation drive by Cincinnati failed.

This is the type of performance that people expect out of the Falcons’ offense every week and really, there’s no reason why they can’t duplicate this effort most Sundays. Matt Ryan averaged 9.1 yards per pass, Turner rushed for 121 yards and seven different receivers caught passes. The deep pass made several appearances today, which is something that has been missing from the Falcons’ offense much of this year.

The bye couldn’t have come at a better time for Atlanta, which is banged up defensively and could use the rest. In the second half, the Falcons have dates with the Bucs (twice), Ravens, Packers, Seahawks and Saints, so they better get healthy.

Eagles completely dominate Falcons, but lose DeSean Jackson after nasty collision

If you type “complete and utter domination” into Google right now, your search will probably yield this:

Eagles 31, Falcons 17.

The Falcons are completely petrified of the Eagles and they have been for the better part of a decade now. Philly has beaten Atlanta 62 of the last 63 times its faced the Falcons (don’t look that figure up – it’s right) and it once again dominated them on Sunday.

The score might as well been Eagles 98, Falcons 0 because the game was never close. Brian Van Gorder had no clue how to defense Marty Mornhinweg’s playing calling, while Sean McDermott’s defense completely befuddled Mike Mularkey, whose going to get Matt Ryan killed if he can’t incorporate more plays that stretch the defense. I swear Mularkey has more stop routes in his offense than L.A. has traffic at 5:00PM on a Friday evening. For once in your life, Mike, get Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez running vertical.

Of course, Ryan didn’t play well Sunday either. He missed open receivers, he freaked out at the sight of pressure, freaked out when there wasn’t pressure and he wasn’t more aggressive late in the game when the Falcons needed a couple of big scores.
