The Tampa Tribune is reporting that Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ quarterback Jeff Garcia will be a game time decision this Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jeff Garcia was a limited participant in Thursday’s practice again and his playing status for Sunday’s game against Atlanta remains up in the air.

Garcia injured his calf earlier this week and has been limited on Wednesday and Thursday. Buccaneers Coach Jon Gruden said Garcia injured the same calf that limited him during training camp, but it was not the same part of that calf.

“It’s a concern,� Gruden said. “It’s a calf injury. It’s not the same part of the calf, but it is a concern. It’s a part of life. Hopefully he can get well in the next day or two. We need him.�

Gruden said backup QB Luke McCown has taken the majority of reps during practice this week and he will likely play if Garcia is unable to go. As of right now, it appears Garcia will be a game-time decision in Atlanta.

“That’s the first time in the last couple of months we’ve seen him throwing the ball as well as he is,� Gruden said. “It’s a good sign for us.�

Garcia should play but this has to be a major concern. The Falcons have only lost once at home this year and haven’t lost back-to-back games all season. (They’re coming off a 29-25 loss to the Saints last Sunday.)

This is a pivotal game for both teams in the NFC South, so one would assume Garcia will play. If not, Atlanta might load up to stop the run and force McCown to beat them through the air. Of course, this could be Gruden playing a mind game with the Falcons, too.

Tama Bay’s 19-13 win over Minnesota on Sunday was yet another example of how Monte Kiffin’s unit is the most underrated defense in the NFL.

The stats are one thing – the Bucs held Gus Frerotte to only 138 yards passing and Adrian Peterson to only 85 yards rushing – but you have to remember that Tampa has the most conservative offense in the league, too. They don’t score a ton of points and they don’t have many explosive playmakers, either. Jon Gruden’s offense relies on the running game and Jeff Garcia not turning the ball over. That’s it. The rest is in the defense’s hands to win the game.

At 8-2, Carolina has been awfully impressive and Matt Ryan has made Atlanta an instant contender in just his rookie season. But with how good the Bucs’ defense is playing, I wouldn’t be surprised if they win the NFC South again this year.

Tampa might be the blandest team in football, but they play their game better than anyone. They keep their game plan simple, don’t turn the ball over and play outstanding defense. They’ve also beaten the Panthers and Falcons earlier in the year and match up incredibly well against both of those teams. The only drawback is that they have to face each of those teams on the road over the next couple months.

The Bucs probably don’t have enough offensive firepower to make a deep postseason run, but barring a collapse they’ll make the playoffs and they’re going to be incredibly tough to beat. (Especially if they get a home playoff game.)

How snake-bitten have the Kansas City Chiefs been this year? They just can’t catch a break despite playing hard the past couple weeks. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers overcame four turnovers and a 21-point deficit to beat the Chiefs 30-27 in overtime on Sunday.

The Chiefs rolled out to a 24-3 first half lead but the Bucs kept chipping away until they got within striking distance in the fourth quarter. Jeff Garcia hit Antonio Bryant on a 24-yard touchdown to cut KC’s lead to 27-25, then found Alex Smith between multiple defenders on a successful two point conversion to force overtime. Tampa then won the game on a Matt Bryant 34-yard field goal in OT.

For a team criticized for not being explosive enough offensively, the Bucs turned it up when they had to in this game. It was a gutsy performance by Garcia (339 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) and Tampa’s offense, which had to overcome an Earnest Graham fumble in the end zone late in the game that could have cost them the opportunity to win.

On a day when Monte Kiffin’s defense looked unusually bad, the Bucs’ offense stepped up big time.

The NFL is mixed bag of emotions every week in terms of how teams play from Sunday to Sunday, but it’s fair to at least take an early look at the contenders and pretenders.

Below is a midseason power ranking of all 32 teams. Along with a ranking, each team gets slapped with a “contender,� “pretender,� or “What time does April’s draft start?� label as well.

We’re heading into Week 9. I fully expect that these rankings will mean absolutely nothing by Week 10, but screw it – let’s have some fun.

Midseason Power Rankings

1. Tennessee Titans (6-0)
It’s kind of hard not to rank the only undefeated team left in the NFL at the No. 1 spot, but the Titans also deserve it. Their offense isn’t flashy outside of Rookie of the Year Candidate RB Chris Johnson, but QB Kerry Collins has provided enough savvy veteran play to allow the defense to win ballgames. And speaking of the defense, it might be the most clutch unit in the NFL season.

2. New York Giants (6-1)
What the hell happened in Cleveland two weeks ago? Eli Manning looked like…well…he looked like Eli Manning pre-postseason 2007 and the defense clearly had no idea how to stop Derek Anderson and that high-powered Browns’ offense (read the sarcasm please). Still, the defending champs have four things going for them right now that make them the best team in the NFL: A quarterback, a running game, a defense that gets after the quarterback and they can win on the road.

3. New England Patriots (5-2)
People are just going to think I’m putting the Pats this high because they’re the Pats. But the reason why I’m putting the Pats this high is because Bill Belichick is on a mission to prove people wrong. And once he sets his sites on proving people wrong, nothing can stop him. Not even Tom Brady on the sideline.

4. Carolina Panthers (6-2)
Their win against Arizona in Week 8 was unimpressive to say the least, but good teams find ways to win even when they don’t play that well. I think this team has a ton of fraud in them, but it’s hard to argue with how well the defense is playing and how much of a different team they are with Jake Delhomme under center. If they can keep running the ball as well as they have, Carolina will win the NFC South.

5. Pittsburgh Steelers (5-2)
The Steelers should have beaten the Giants last Sunday – plain and simple. They had control of the game but a botched snap and some failed protection for Ben Roethlisberger cost them a win. I still think the offensive line is going to be an issue all season, but every time you think Pittsburgh is going to take a step back and start stumbling, they prove that they can win tight games with key players on the sidelines.
