Stallworth facing manslaughter charge

According to the Miami Herald, Browns’ receiver Donte’ Stallworth is facing DUI manslaughter charges and could face up to 15-years in jail.

Donte StallworthDUI manslaughter charges are expected to be filed Wednesday afternoon against Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte’ Stallworth, alleging the football player was driving drunk last month when he struck and killed a pedestrian on Miami Beach, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation.

Blood tests revealed Stallworth had a blood alcohol level of .12 after the 7 a.m. crash, a second source with knowledge of the investigation told The Miami Herald.

Arrangements have been made for Stallworth to surrender to authorities, the source said.

Police have been investigating Stallworth since March 14, when police responded to the scene of a fatal car crash at the southeast end of the MacArthur Causeway in Miami Beach.

Police said Stallworth was driving a Bentley east on the MacArthur Causeway about 7 a.m. and struck Mario Reyes, 59, who was getting off work and crossing the street to get to a bus stop.

This entire situation is sad. It’s sad that Stallworth made an incredibly poor decision to drive while under the influence and it’s obviously even sadder that a man lost his life because of it. We’re all human and we all make mistakes. Stallworth made a huge mistake and it looks like he’ll pay for it. (Then again, Leonard Little was charged with DUI manslaughter and all he served was 90 days in jail, so who knows how long Stallworth will get.)

I just pray for everyone in involved and I feel for the victim’s family

Giants not pursing Boldin or Edwards

According to the New York Daily News, the Giants don’t appear to be seriously pursing trades for receivers Anquan Boldin or Braylon Edwards.

Anquan BoldinIt could change as the draft gets closer, but it doesn’t appear the Giants are going to be able to get Anquan Boldin out of Arizona or Braylon Edwards out of Cleveland. Cards coach Ken Whisenhunt said they are negotiating with Boldin on a new deal to replace the two years left on his contract. “We haven’t thought about him not being back,” he said. And Mangini was raving about Edwards last week, which could be genuine or designed to drive up his market value. “He hurt us at the Jets,” said Mangini, who then described an acrobatic catch he made on Darrelle Revis.

With the draft now less than a month away, this the time of year where teams start throwing out their best crap in order to not tip their hands in terms of trades. The Giants don’t want to appear too eager to acquire Boldin or Edwards, while the Cardinals and Browns act like they couldn’t live without the players. As the draft approaches, we’ll see if the Giants’ interest for either receiver picks up again, with the more likely scenario being they acquire Edwards from Cleveland.

Michael Crabtree an option for Browns?

The Cleveland Plain Dealer notes that Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree is a viable option for the Browns at No. 5 in next month’s NFL draft.

Hey, Tony: What are the Browns going to do about the WR position now? Do you see us taking Michael Crabtree in the first and then using our multiple second-round picks on LBs? — Jeff Smith, Naples, Fla.

Hey, Jeff: Crabtree is a viable option now at No. 5 for the Browns. I’m usually not an advocate of taking a receiver so high, however.

Hey, Tony: Well, we have to ask the question, what do we do in Stallworth’s absence? Free agency? Draft? — Todd Hollis, Massillon

Hey, Todd: The Browns signed David Patten, who will be 35 by the season opener. I’m sure they’ll add more receivers, pending Stallworth’s legal process.

Before he had foot surgery to repair a small stress fracture, some felt as though Crabtree was the best prospect in the draft. With all due respect to Aaron Curry, Matthew Stafford and Jason Smith, Crabtree might still be the best prospect, especially considering his foot injury isn’t expected to be a reoccurring problem.

Speculation has it that the Browns have been or are willing to trade Braylon Edwards, whose contract expires at the end of the season. If Cleveland could swing a deal with a team like the Giants and wind up trading Edwards, then there will be an obvious need for a receiver, especially considering Donte Stallworth’s pending situation. The Browns would love to add an outside linebacker (they seemingly solved their inside linebacker quandary with free agent Eric Barton) and they have needs at safety as well. At No. 5, there isn’t an outside 3-4 linebacker worthy of taking that high. So unless they can trade down, Crabtree makes sense and is definitely top 5 material. He would also allow the Browns some flexibility with Edwards, who Cleveland wouldn’t necessarily have to trade right away or worry about doling out a new contract to a player that quite frankly hasn’t been worth it.

Mangini wants Favre to attend Browns’ camp

Eric Mangini is reaching out to Brett Favre in hopes that the future Hall of Fame quarterback will make an appearance at the Browns’ training camp this summer to help be an instructor to Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn.

Mangini told the New York Daily News that he and Favre have been text messaging since they last saw each other December 29, the day the Jets fired Mangini and the day after Favre played his final NFL game.

The two are discussing Favre joining Mangini at Browns camp this summer. Favre couldn’t run the practice team because he is still under contract with the Jets, but Mangini didn’t rule out Favre being a guest instructor for quarterbacks Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson.

“I don’t think it would be anything formal,” Mangini told the newspaper. “It’s not like we are hiring him to run the scout team. I don’t think he would be interested in that. He would be more like a visitor. An open invite.”

This is a flat out stupid idea. Why would Mangini, in his first year in Cleveland mind you, invite a media circus to spring training? Furthermore, when has Favre ever been known as a mentor? The guy has always walked to the beat of his own drum and I could be wrong, but I don’t think I ever heard Aaron Rodgers say Favre was a great inspiration to him in Green Bay.

The idea sounds good; hey, bring in a future Hall of Famer to show Anderson and Quinn the ropes. But it seems highly unnecessary and it would no doubt create a distraction that Anderson, Quinn nor the Browns need in training camp. This just doesn’t make much sense and again, the media will try to blow this up to epic proportions once/if it happens.

Shaun Rogers reports to offseason program

Even though he stated at one point this offseason that he would like the Browns to release him, nose tackle Shaun Rogers reported to Cleveland’s workout program after skipping the first week of conditioning.

Shaun RogersBrowns nose tackle Shaun Rogers is participating in the Browns off-season program this week after skipping last week’s opening sessions while he resolved his differences with coach Eric Mangini.

Rogers is seen shaking hands with another teammate before starting his workout. The video comes a day after Browns General Manager George Kokinis said at the NFL owner’s meetings that Rogers and Mangini had a “good conversation.” He also said, “The communication is ongoing now and I think that’s being cleaned up.”

Kokinis said Rogers intended to fulfill “his contractual obligations,” and that “whatever weight” he wanted to play at was fine with Kokinis because he dominated last season.

Rogers, who made his third Pro Bowl last season, had been miffed about two perceived snubs by Mangini and a mandate to show up for the off-season program in shape. He asked the Browns to release him and not pay him his $6 million bonus due last week, but the Browns made it clear they had no intentions of doing so. Apparently, the matter has been resolved or is well on its way to being settled.

This is real good news for the Browns and it looks like a potential disaster has been avoided (at least for now). Rogers was an absolute stud last year and could do very well in Mangini’s 3-4 defense. Mangini needs him on the field and so do the Browns.
