Rockets need to “cage the pit bull”

Ball Don’t Lie has some choice words for Ron Artest after Houston’s loss last night to the Lakers.

Artest destroyed the Rockets offensively. He shot terrible perimeter looks from inside and outside the three-point arc despite any indication that he deserved those looks, or could hit them on an efficient or consistent basis. 11 points on 16 shots … do you know how bad that is? How much that hurts a team playing in what was essentially a one or two possession game the entire night?

We knew Artest’s ability to help or hurt the Rockets would not come in the form of some lame suspension or locker room issue, but in how he controlled his usage. And he, and Rick Adelman to a large extent, could not cage the pit bull on Wednesday. And it killed the team’s chances of winning.

(Note to Adelman and Daryl Morey … you get paid to cage the pit bull, so cage the pit bull. The overriding fear is that Artest will stop playing defense if he isn’t getting offensive looks, and that’s a reasonable fear, mainly because Ron has done it in the past. Doesn’t matter. He single-handedly lost a game for you tonight, on the defensive end as well. The difference between good and legendary coaches, guys like Phil Jackson and Coach Pop, is their ability to cage the pit bull.)

With Tracy McGrady out, Artest is the main wing threat for the Rockets, and if he can’t find a way to play efficiently offensively, Houston is in for another first round exit from the playoffs.

New Yankee Stadium to be antimicrobial

Apparently most of new Yankee Stadium will be koodie-free:

The New York Yankees announced Wednesday the new Yankee Stadium will become the first antimicrobial facility in Major League Baseball.

The system is a comprehensive process that kills illness-causing microorganisms, and continually inhibits the growth of bacteria, mold and fungi on any surface for up to three years, officials said.

Areas of the stadium to be treated include the home and visiting club houses, locker rooms, training rooms, dugouts, showers, managers and coaches offices, weight-training areas and family lounge. Additionally, the team’s washable fabrics will be treated with FabricAid, Behar said.

The SportsAide 1000 system is used by more than 1,200 high schools and pro franchises nationwide for several reasons, but most importantly because the water-based antimicrobial fights a wide array of microbial growth, said Craig Andrews, chief executive officer of CSG.

No word yet on if the fans will benefit from the same antimicrobial treatment in the public areas.

Well that’s convenient now isn’t it? The million dollar athletes don’t have to worry about bacteria, mold and fungi, but the poor bastards in Section 128, Row F will be just as exposed to germs as ever. Awesome.

Alabama’s Andre Smith could fall out of top 15

Alabama offensive tackle Andre Smith has done little right after being suspended for the 2009 Sugar Bowl by his former head coach Nick Saban for violating team rules.

Along with Baylor’s Jason Smith and Virginia’s Eugene Monroe, Andre Smith was supposed to be one of the top tackles taken in April’s draft. But things went horrible wrong for Smith at the NFL Scouting Combine in late February as he measured 6’4” and 332 pounds (which is weight more suitable for a guard than a tackle), flat out admitted that he wasn’t in good shape and then mysteriously disappeared without working out.

Several media outlets claimed that Smith’s interviews with prospective teams went “horribly” prior to his disappearance from the combine (which turned out to be a communication problem between him and his agent according to Smith) and some claim that he didn’t perform well at his Pro Day on Wednesday.

Where Smith could fall on draft day is anyone’s guess. Given his talent alone, he could easily be a top 5 pick. But due to his roller coaster of an offseason, he could also drop into the bottom half of the first round.

49ers beat writer Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee believes that San Fran won’t pass on Smith at No. 10, because they sorely need a right tackle and he also believes that head coach Mike Singletary could have a good influence on the young offensive lineman.

But you can’t teach heart and desire and although Smith had an outstanding career at Alabama, he has done nothing to warrant being a top 10 pick in this year’s draft. In fact, if he is selected in the top 10, then maybe the scouting combine means even less than we all thought.

Landon Donovan returning to the Galaxy

MLS star Landon Donovan, who spent the last two months on loan with former German soccer champions Bayern Munich, has returned to the Los Angeles Galaxy. Though Donovan led the MLS with 20 goals scored the prior season, his performance with the German club in competitive matches was less than stellar. Unlike his Galaxy teammate David Beckham (who was asked by AC Milan to return), Bayern Munich has decided to pass on Donovan.

“I’m very excited to be back,” Donovan said after practice at the Home Depot Center. “I had a good time in Germany. It was a very interesting experience for a lot of reasons. Some good, some bad.

“You always wonder if you’re capable of playing on that level, and it quickly became apparent that I was and that I enjoyed it. But there is something distinctly different about the environment here” in the U.S.

“One of the building blocks of our team is now here,” said Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena, who can begin the serious work of putting together a starting 11 for the March 22 opener against D.C. United in Carson.

The Galaxy has failed to make the playoffs for three consecutive seasons, and Arena, who was hired last August as coach and general manager and subsequently became Donovan’s Manhattan Beach neighbor, has dismantled last-season’s side and started virtually from scratch.

“It’s going to take time for all of us to get to know each other and make adjustments,” he said. “I believe half our team is new, and that’s difficult. So it’s going to be important that early in the season we stick together.

I think I was one of the few who thought Donovan would be so successful in Germany that he would never return to the MLS. It’s funny how quickly professional soccer players can get the axe. Donovan only played in 11 matches (five friendly, six competitive) during his two-month stint in Germany and Bayern management quickly felt the relationship wasn’t working.

These types of overseas experiments are much different with the NBA and MLB. There’s no such thing as having a player on “loan.” Foreign talent is frequently signed (sometimes a bit too quickly), often to monster-sized contracts a la Daisuke Matsuzaka. If the player fails to produce, the owner is bound to a contract, whereas soccer clubs seem to simply pay players on loan on a per match basis. These “experiments” between professional soccer leagues seem logical actually, especially in these economic times. To owners, players are nothing more than an investment that may or may not reap rewards.

To be fair, Donovan did score a combined four goals in his five friendly matches in Germany. I expected Donovan to do well abroad, especially since their approach to the game suits his style of play. Oh well. At least the most dominant goal scorer in the MLS has returned to the team that needs him the most.

Couch Potato Alert: 3/12

No fewer than ten bubble teams will be in action on Thursday. If any of these teams lose, they’re looking at the NIT, so these are virtual playoff games. Also, don’t forget the NBA doubleheader on TNT — Lakers/Spurs at 8 PM and Cavs/Suns at 10:30 PM.

All times ET.

12 PM: Providence vs. #5 Louisville (ESPN)
The Friars are on the hot seat and really need a win against Louisville to earn a spot in the tourney. A loss probably knocks them out.

12 PM: Northwestern vs. Minnesota (Big Ten Network)
The Gophers are on the bubble and they need a win against the feisty Wildcats. If they lose, they’ll really be squirming on Selection Sunday.

12 PM: Virginia Tech vs. Miami (ESPN 360)
Both teams are on the bubble, and the winner probably needs to beat North Carolina in the next round.

2:30 PM: #21 Marquette vs. #13 Villanova (ESPN)

This game will have an effect on the seeding for the Big Dance.

2:30 PM: Iowa vs. Michigan (ESPN2)
The Wolverines can’t lose to the Hawkeyes and expect to get an NCAA berth.

3 PM: Arizona vs. #23 Arizona St. (FSN)
I think this is the game of the day. The Sun Devils can probably end their arch-rival’s season if they can hang a loss on the Wildcats.

3 PM: Texas vs. Kansas St. (ESPN360)
The Wildcats really need a win against Texas to get back into the conversation.

5 PM: Penn St. vs. Indiana (ESPN)
This is pretty much a must-win game for the Nittany Lions.

7 PM: Maryland vs. N.C. State (ESPN2)
The Terps need to make a run in the ACC tourney to get a look from the committee.

7 PM: West Virginia vs. #2 Pittsburgh (ESPN)
The Mountaineers are safely in, but could improve their seeding with a win over Pitt. Meanwhile, the Panthers need to win to secure a #1 seed.

9 PM: USC vs. Cal (FSN)
The Golden Bears are already in, but they can end the Trojans’ season with a win. USC needs to make a run and a win over Cal would really help.

9:30 PM: #20 Syracuse vs. #4 UConn (ESPN)
If the Huskies want a #1 seed, they’re going to have to beat the Orangemen and (probably) make the Big East Championship final.
