      Packers to trade Aaron Kampman?

      YAHOO! Sports.com suggests that the Packers could trade defensive end/outside linebacker Aaron Kampan.

      7. Green Bay defensive end Aaron Kampman – This is going to be considered heresy by some Packers fans, particularly since Kampman recorded 37 sacks over the past three seasons. However, in switching to the 3-4 defense under defensive coordinator Dom Capers, the Packers have put in a system where Kampman is going to be extremely limited. In short, Kampman is a high-motor athlete who operates best when he can attack a right offensive tackle from a three-point stance, using his initial burst and knowledge of hand techniques. When the Packers put Kampman out farther on the edge in a 3-4, his skills will be diminished. Furthermore, he’s never dropped into coverage on a regular basis, so that’s going to be a shock. Unless the Packers find a way to highlight Kampman’s strengths in some other way, he just doesn’t work in this system.

      Considering the Packers have done next to nothing to address their switch to a 3-4, I highly doubt that they would trade Kampman. I agree that he isn’t an ideal fit as an outside linebacker in a 3-4, but Green Bay GM Ted Thompson has sat on his ass so far in free agency so I doubt Kampman is going anywhere.

      The Packers are thin along the defensive line (they need a true 3-4 defensive end to play opposite Cullen Jenkins) and at linebacker, so it doesn’t make sense for them to create another hole by dealing Kampman.

      Report: Draft prospect Raji failed drug test at combine

      SI.com is reporting that Boston College defensive tackle prospect B.J. Raji failed a drug test at the NFL scouting combine in February.

      B.J. RajiAccording to the NFL’s drug policy, a positive test for street drugs, which includes marijuana, puts a player into the initial stage of the NFL’s drug program. He’s then subject to random testing and subject to a fine or suspension if he tests positive again.

      How this affects Raji’s draft grade remains to be seen. He missed the 2007 college season with academic issues, returned to Boston College and had a terrific senior campaign, recording eight sacks and 42 tackles, with 16 tackles for loss. He was a dominant force during the week of practice at the Senior Bowl and continued his momentum up draft boards after turning in good combine and pro-day workouts. His performances the past three months have some scouts believing he’ll be taken in the top third of the first round of the April 25 draft.

      One source familiar with the positive drug test assessed Raji’s draft prospects by saying, “It’s a roll of the dice. If Raji stays clean and plays to his potential, you could have a dominant defensive lineman on your team. Then again, it does nobody any good if the kid is on the sidelines serving a suspension for a failed test.”

      As the article notes, Warren Sapp tested positive for drugs before the 1995 draft and obviously he turned out just fine. But this obviously is horrible timing for Raji, whose draft stock couldn’t have been higher following excellent pre-draft workouts. My guess is that he’ll still be selected in the top 15, but this no doubt raises some red flags about his character.

      Iverson would “retire” before coming off the bench again

      It’s safe to say that the Chauncey Billups-for-Allen Iverson trade hasn’t worked out very well for the 2008-09 Detroit Pistons. The team is 36-39 and is just two games ahead of the 9th place Charlotte Bobcats. The two teams play on Sunday in Detroit, and if the Bobcats can pull out a win, they will be very much in the thick of a playoff spot, meaning that the Pistons could miss the postseason for the first time in…well…forever. (Meanwhile, Billups’ Nuggets are in second place in the West and have won nine of their last 10 games. And Chauncey gets to look at “Bouncing Bridget” every time the Nuggets play a home game.)

      Iverson has been fighting a sore back and shin, and the Pistons have elected to use him off the bench for the last three games. During that span, he’s averaging 18.7 minutes, 7.7 points (on 36% shooting) and 2.7 assists. And he’s none too happy about his playing time.

      Reporter: You made a comment the other day about how this is a temporary situation. What did you mean by that?

      Iverson: I won’t do this again, in my career. I’ll retire before I do this again. I would leave the game before I do this. I can’t be effective like I know I can playing this way. It’s just that I’m not used to it. Just not something I’ve had to do. Like I said, it’s hard for me mentally and physically.

      Reporter: So, on a positive note, what can you say about guys coming off the bench?

      Iverson: Like I said. I take my hat off to the guys that can do it. And some guys get used to it. They’ve done it before. Like I said, I’ve been playing basketball since I was eight-years-old, and I never had to do it. At 33-years-old, to have to adjust to something like that it’s kind of tough. That’s something I’m dealing with as far as my rhythm, my timing and like I said, the mental part of that.

      With the trade, Joe Dumars gave the team a ton of flexibility to rebuild over the next couple of years, but he really sunk these 2008-09 Pistons. With Billups on the roster, they’d be a top 4 team in the East, and with the injuries to Boston’s Kevin Garnett and Orlando’s Jameer Nelson, they’d have a legitimate shot at being the second-best team in the conference. Is that enough?

      I don’t know — one injury to LeBron and suddenly the Pistons would be first in line to go the Finals. That seems like a good thing, right?

      Only time will tell what kind of free agents Dumars will be able to attract over the next couple of summers. Then we’ll know if this Billups-for-AI swap was worth it.

      FBB Notes: Liriano to start opener, Street named closer, Wilson hurt

      – The Twins placed RHP Scott Baker on the 15-day DL with right shoulder stiffness, which means Francisco Liriano will start for Minnesota on Opening Day. (Rotoworld.com)

      – It appears that Huston Street has officially beat out Manny Corpas for the right to be named the Rockies’ Opening Day closer. (Denver Post)

      – Giants’ closer Brian Wilson (who saved 41 games last season and made the All-Star Game) hasn’t pitched in eight days because of an infected middle finger and could miss Opening Day. San Fran would likely choose either Jeremy Affeldt or Bob Howry to close in Wilson isn’t ready by next Tuesday. (San Francisco Chronicle)

      – Cardinals’ third basemen Troy Glaus might not return before the All-Star Break as he continues to rehab following shoulder surgery. (St. Louis Dispatch)

      – The Reds are showing interest in outfielder Gary Sheffield, who was released by the Tigers last week. (Reds.mlb.com)

      – Fernando Rodney has been named the Tigers’ closer for Opening Day, although manager Jim Leyland indicated that Brandon Lyon could still get the opportunity to close games early on. (Detroit Free Press)

      UFC’s Dana White unleashes profanity-laced tirade at reporter

      Apparently UFC President Dana White isn’t a big fan of MMA reporter Loretta Hunt’s work.

      SPORTSbyBROOKS.com fills us in on how White unleashed a five minute hate speech tirade on her after she recently wrote a story about how some managers and agents are losing backstage passes at UFC events.

      Most of White rambling, hate-filled harangue isn’t worth printing, considering how he addressed Hunt and her reportage. But here’s some of the missives:

      “I just heard there was an absolutely f—ing retarded story written by Loretta Hunt. Loretta, you f—ing moron. …

      “Just to show how f—ing dumb you are, number one. … you don’t even know what the f— you’re talking about. … shut the f— up. …

      “Whoever gave you that quote is a pussy, and a f—ing faggot and a liar. …

      “Maybe you’re the liar Loretta, writing bullsh– f—ing stories. Everything that comes out of your mouth is f—ing stupid. …

      “You f—ing dumb bitch, f— you Loretta Hunt.”

      White also kicked in an obscene gesture while making the final comment.
      Now for a little background on Hunt from one of my well-placed MMA sources:
      “This Loretta Hunt and Sherdog have been banned from covering UFC for years. They are not credentialed to the events. Yet Sherdog is the content provider for ESPN and Hunt is their lead writer.”
      Interesting. So not only is White verbally spitting in the face of Hunt, but he’s also, albeit indirectly, doing the same to ESPN.

      Wonder how the Worldwide Leader will respond to this? Hopefully by airing the comments to an audience of millions, so people can see and here the real White.

      I don’t follow enough UFC, MMA, Dana White or Loretta Hunt content to know what White is talking about in this video, but he comes off sounding completely unprofessional and moronic. Whether what he is saying is true or not, White’s entire tirade comes off sloppy, unprepared and completely unnecessary.
