NBA Draft Lottery: Who wouldn’t pick John Wall #1?

The NBA Draft Lottery is tonight, and as always, there is a lot riding on a few ping pong balls. Here is a list of the lottery teams (with their chances of winning the top pick in parenthesis) along with some discussion of their possible strategy if they do win the #1 pick.

ALMOST A SURE THING

Nets (25%)
The Wall-to-New Jersey/Brooklyn rumors have been strong all season, thanks to the Nets’ woeful record and Devin Harris’s struggles. Harris is now viewed as expendable, which means Wall would be a Net if the balls bounce their way tonight.

Wizards (10.3%)
Winning the right to draft Wall would allow the Wizards to cut ties with Gilbert Arenas and the franchise’s gun-toting past. It might also convince a free agent or two to sign for the chance to play with Wall.

76ers (5.3%)
Jrue Holiday is nice, but he’s not going to dissuade the Sixers from drafting a franchise-savior like Wall.

Pistons (5.2%)
See 76ers above but substitute “Rodney Stuckey” for “Jrue Holiday.” That is all.

Pacers (1.1%)
Indiana arguably needs a point guard more than any other team in the lottery, but with just a 1.1% chance of winning, they’re hoping against hope.

Grizzlies (0.7%)
Memphis would be buzzing with the arrival of Wall, who would seemingly be a great fit with O.J. Mayo, a re-signed Rudy Gay, Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol. Memphis would likely make the playoffs next season.

Raptors (0.6%)
The chances are very slim, but winning the right to draft Wall would offset the likely loss of Chris Bosh this summer. Neither Jarrett Jack nor Jose Calderon would be enough to convince the Raptors to draft Evan Turner.

Ricky Rubio highlights from Euroleague semis [video]

Wondering how Ricky Rubio is doing over in Spain? Well, his team (Barcelona) won the Euroleague title. Here is a crude mash up of his highlights for the semifinal game, where had 10 points, eight assists, four rebounds and two steals. He had a hand in 41% of his team’s points.

He looks a little stronger — let’s not forget that he’s still only 19 years old — and has the same court vision and ball handling that had scouts drooling over his skill set last summer.

He reminds me of a young Jason Kidd — a floor leader with an improving jumper. Kidd is quite a bit stronger and is a better rebounder, but the similarities are there.

Rubio has stated that he’s going to play in Europe for another season and then come over to the NBA. Only time will tell if he ends up playing for the team (T-Wolves) that drafted him.

Who will win the NBA Most Improved Player award?

When handicapping the NBA MIP award, I always like to look at the player’s original draft position. Here’s a table with the last 20 winners of the MIP award. Take a look:

Notice anything? Only one MIP winner in the last 16 years (Tracy McGrady) was drafted in the first 12 picks.

It appears that the voters don’t just look at overall improvement, they also take into account unexpected improvement.

Looking at TrueHoop’s list of MIP candidates that received more than one vote from a panel of voters, here are draft positions for each player: Kevin Durant (2), Andrew Bogut (1), Corey Brewer (7), Joakim Noah (9), Josh Smith (17), Russell Westbrook (4), Aaron Brooks (26), Anderson Varejao (30), Channing Frye (8), Al Horford (3), Andray Blatche (49) and Zach Randolph (19).

Can we safely cross Durant, Bogut, Noah, Westbrook, Frye and Horford off the list?

Did Patrick Patterson really declare for the draft?

According to his mother, Tywanna Patterson, he hasn’t made up his mind. Thanks to Vaught’s Views for the quotes.

“I found out UK released a statement saying Patrick and the four freshmen are leaving for the NBA and will declare for the draft,” said Tywanna Patterson Wednesday night. “I said, ‘Really, nobody told me.”

“I have a problem with it going out and not being official. It is his decision. He has not declared for the draft and once he does he can’t back out because he declared for the draft last year.”

“Me personally, I think it is Cal’s way to get recruits to commit and wants to make sure they know John (Wall), DeMarcus (Cousins), Daniel (Orton) and Eric (Bledsoe) are gone along with Patrick,” Tywanna Patterson said. “Pat didn’t know they were sending that statement out tonight.”

This doesn’t make much sense to me. If Patterson was still thinking about staying at Kentucky for another season, wouldn’t it serve Calipari’s best interests if he played another year? The only way I see this helping him is if he was pretty sure that Patterson was leaving and he wanted to get that news out there so he could land an extra recruit.

Either way, it’s a pretty slimy thing to do.

Who is William “Worldwide Wes” Wesley?

The now infamous, behind-the-scenes NBA power broker was reportedly the one who first introduced LeBron James to Michael Jordan (resulting in LeBron signing with Nike). He has friends all over the sports and entertainment industry and has recently agreed to join CAA to become an agent.

So who is Worldwide Wes? Here is all the info I could find. If you have any other good sources, put the link(s) in the comment section and I’ll add it to the list.
