Zambrano suspended six games for tirade

Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano will be suspended six games after he bumped umpire Mark Carlson and then went on to throw a temper tantrum on the field and in the dugout in a game against the Pirates on Wednesday.

Zambrano’s agent, Barry Praver, said the penalty, which included a $3,000 fine, a source told ESPNChicago.com, will not be appealed. The suspension began Thursday night and barring rainouts Zambrano will be eligible to pitch next Thursday at Atlanta.

The Cubs ace threw a baseball into left field, slammed his glove against the dugout fence, and used a bat to smash a Gatorade dispenser in the Cubs’ dugout after he was ejected Wednesday with Chicago leading 2-1 in the seventh inning of a 5-2 victory Pittsburgh.

“I apologize for that. Like I said, I should have more control of myself in that situation,” Zambrano said after the game. “I just wanted to get out of that inning and win the ballgame. I didn’t say a bad word. I should have gone to the clubhouse and keep watching the game. I apologize for throwing the ball and the other things.”

Six games seems a little extreme, but I like the fact that Big Z won’t appeal. What for? It’s like when you get a speeding ticket on the highway; yeah it sucks, but you got caught, so take your punishment and move on.

My question is, if Zambrano got a six game suspension for bumping an umpire, then why didn’t the ump that “forcibly guided” Tigers’ outfielder Magglio Ordonez out of the batter’s box during a game against the Twins a couple weeks ago not get punished? Zambrano gets six games for slightly bumping an umpire but an umpire who puts his hands on a player gets to skate with just an apology? This certainly isn’t worth a full on debate, but isn’t that a little ridiculous? Hey, if umpires don’t want to be touched, then they shouldn’t be touching players either.

Hurdle to be fired? Some Rockies believe so.

According to a report by the Colorado Springs Gazette, several Rockies players believe that manager Clint Hurdle will get the axe soon.

Via Rotoworld.com:

“Following another dismal showing Wednesday in an 8-6 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers at Coors Field, several Rockies players privately speculated that today’s off day could mark the end of Hurdle’s seven-plus-year tenure as manager,” read’s The Gazette’s report. The Rox are off to an 18-28 start and attendance numbers have plummeted. We’ll be on watch.

It’s amazing how quickly things can change in sports. Just two seasons ago, Hurdle led the Rockies to their best finish ever in the club’s 15-year history by winning the last 14 of 15 regular season contests to force a one-game tie-breaker with the Padres for the right to win the NL Wild Card.

Colorado beat San Diego and the Rockies marched right into a World Series appearance for the first time in club history. The Red Sox eventually swept them right out of the Fall Classic but still, it was quite the magical season for Hurdle and the Rockies.

And now Hurdle could be on his way out just two seasons later. Amazing.

Carlos Zambrano ejection video

Yesterday I posted about Cubs’ starter Carlos Zambrano being ejected during a game against the Pirates after going bananas on home plate umpire Mark Carlson.

Well here’s the video of Big Z’s tirade:

Love the bat-to-the-cooler part, although it kind of reminds me of one Andrew Bernard’s reaction in an episode of “The Office” when Jim hides his cell phone in the ceiling tiles and he can’t find it.

Classic.

Indians’ owner Dolan suffers heart attack

Cleveland Indians owner Larry Dolan has been hospitalized after suffering a mild heart attack Wednesday night.

Indians vice president Bob DiBiasio says Dolan was taken to the hospital Wednesday and will remain there for observation. DiBiasio says the 78-year-old Dolan is in good spirits.

Dolan was born and raised in Cleveland. He acquired all outstanding stock in the Indians from Richard Jacobs in a cash merger in February 2000. Dolan is also the team’s chief executive officer.

Since it’s being considered a mild heart attack, I don’t feel too bad posting this, but this was the Fark tagline that was submitted with the link to the story:

“Cleveland Indians owner Larry Dolan has heart attack after Indians win 2 games in a row.”

Hopefully Dolan is okay and he’ll have a full recovery. (As well as sees that tagline and laughs so me and the person that wrote it don’t go to hell.)

Dice-K falls to 0-3 on the season, sets record for wild pitches

The 2009 season has not been kind so far to Red Sox starter Daisuke Matsuzaka, who dropped to 0-3 on the season after setting a record for wild pitches in a 4-2 loss to the Twins on Wednesday.

Daisuke Matsuzaka and the rest of the Red Sox righties tied a modern-day record with six wild pitches while Twins starter Kevin Slowey was the picture of control in Minnesota’s 4-2 victory over Boston.

Matsuzaka (0-3) tied a franchise record set 80 years ago with four wild pitches, while relievers Manny Delcarmen and Justin Masterson also sent Kottaras scrambling. It was just the fifth time since 1900 that a team threw six wild pitches in a game.

Boston’s slumping slugger, David Ortiz, batted sixth again and continued to look slow with the stick. He struck out on three pitches in his first at-bat, the last an 89 mph fastball that Slowey left up and over the middle of the plate.

It’s amazing how some of the key components that helped Boston win a World Series just two seasons ago can’t get it together this year. (Or are serving a 50-game suspension for another team.)

Big Papi is hitting a flabbergasting .193 with just one home run and 18 RBI, Dice-K is currently 0-3 with an eye-popping 8.82 ERA and 2.33 WHIP, and Jason Varitek is only hitting…okay well, Jason Varitek could never hit.

The good thing is that Kevin Youkilis is hitting almost .380 this year, Dustin Pedroia hasn’t cooled off since winning the AL MVP Award last season and Jason Bay is currently playing out of his mind. Still, it’ll be interesting to see if guys like Dice-K and Big Papi can turn it around at some point this year. You have to wonder if Big Papi is still hurt or if not having Manny in the lineup is killing his production. (Or as some people speculate, whether or not he’s still on the juice.)
