      2009 NFL Week 7 Picks & Predictions

      Instead of limiting myself to only four games like I have the previous weeks, I’ve decided to channel my inner Peter King and make predictions (with smaller write ups) on every contest on the NFL schedule this week.

      49ers at Texans, 1:00PM ET
      It had to have been a long two weeks for San Francisco’s players after the Falcons drubbed the Niners 45-10 in Week 5. Mike Singletary will have his team more focused and I think we’ll see a great defensive effort from San Fran this Sunday to slow down a potent Houston offensive attack.
      Odds: Texans –3.
      Prediction: 49ers 20, Texans 17.

      Packers at Browns, 1:00PM ET
      This will be a closer game than most think. The Packers could be looking ahead to a home date with the Vikings next Sunday, although in the end Cleveland’s offense is putrid and while Green Bay has been inconsistent defensively this year, I think they’ll do enough to get the Pack a victory.
      Odds: Packers –9.
      Prediction: Packers 24, Browns 16.

      Chargers at Chiefs, 1:00PM ET
      Ron Rivera has no clue on how to get San Diego’s defense back on track, but the young, inexperienced Kansas City secondary could have issues slowing down Philip Rivers and the Bolts’ passing game. Still, I think Matt Cassel and company pull off a surprise upset at home against a San Diego team coming off a short week.
      Odds: Chargers –5
      Prediction: Chiefs 20, Chargers 18.

      Colts at Rams, 1:00PM ET
      The Rams have given a nice effort the past two weeks, but this is a horrible matchup for them – even at home. Peyton Manning and company is well rested and the Indy defense will harass Marc Bulger all game.
      Odds: Colts –14
      Prediction: Colts 34, Rams 14.

      Could Florida be in trouble on Saturday?

      Considering No. 1 Florida opened as a 24-point favorite, one would assume that they won’t face much of a challenge this Saturday night. Mississippi State is just 3-4 on the year and has lost three of their last four games. Their most significant win came on the road against a Vanderbilt team that is just 2-5 on the year.

      But there are several factors that should concern the Gators as they get ready to do battle with the Bulldogs on Saturday night:

      – The Gators haven’t won in Starkville since 1985. They were defeated on Mississippi State’s home turf in 1992, 2000 and most recently in 2004.

      – Florida could be down three defensive starters, including linebacker Brandon Spikes, and defensive tackles Jaye Howard and Lawrence Marsh. Spikes re-injured his left groin last week and missed most of Florida’s win over Arkansas. With him on the sidelines, the Razorbacks rushed for 133 yards and finished with 357 yards of total offense.

      – Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen severed as Florida’s quarterback coach and offensive coordinator from 2005 to 2008. If anyone knows how to exploit Tim Tebow and the rest of the Gators’ offense, it would be Mullen.

      – Despite their losing record, the Bulldogs have the 13th best rushing offense in the nation and are averaging 219 yards per game on the ground this season. Senior Anthony Dixon has rushed for over 100 yards in each of his last five games, including a 138 and a 139-yard effort in his last two outings.

      At the end of the day, Florida will have the better team on Saturday night. Even without Spikes, Howard and Marsh, they have enough depth defensively to limit how effective Mississippi State’s offense can be. But there are more than enough factors that should have Urban Meyer concerned about a potential upset, none bigger than the Gators’ poor showings in previous trips to Starkville.

      Brett Myers gets denied!

      Hey, we’ve all been there. We go in for a kiss with that special someone who wasn’t expecting it and all of a sudden they pull away as if you have a combination of tuna fish and dirty diaper on your breath.

      But in most cases, your failed smooch doesn’t occur after you won a game to get you back into the World Series, nor does it happen on national television.

      Unless of course, you’re Phillies pitcher Brett Myers.

      Seeing as how he was accused of punching his wife in 2006, Myers deserved every bit of that humiliation.

      Former GM’s wife rips Titans’ Jeff Fisher

      The wife of former Titans GM Floyd Reese ripped into head coach Jeff Fisher on WGFX-FM 140.5 The Zone on Thursday, indicating that her husband is the only reason Fisher still has a job.

      From the Nashville City Paper:

      Sally Reese, who alleged that her husband saved Fisher from being fired twice in his tenure, indicated that she was happy that the Patriots routed the Titans in the fashion they did and hoped it would be worse than the final score.

      “He kept Jeff from getting fired two times. So if he’d let him get fired, he’d still be there. Hello? That’s hindsight.” Reese said. “But you know paybacks — can I say bitch? — payback’s a bitch. Sunday I was hoping they’d run it to 100. And I love Tennessee. All you Tennessee people, my dad’s from Tennessee, but when you get sucker punched, you want to sucker punch back. My husband said it would be very uncool. He said, ‘We have to play them again.’ I said I only hope.”

      Sally Reese also refuted that Fisher did not have input into the draft process while Floyd Reese was GM.

      “Floyd had Devin Hester on the phone. He was going to the Titans. And Jeff wanted LenDale White. So Floyd backed it up, and you guys got LenDale. The Chicago Bears got [Hester], and that would have been the fourth Rookie of the Year my husband would have had. Not too shabby,” Reese said. “I just wanted to set the record straight, because sometimes when I hear what John has to say, I have to say B.S. to it. So that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.”

      Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

      During Reese’s time in Tennessee, the Titans won 106 regular season games, three division titles and nearly won Super Bowl XXXIV. I don’t know if the intimate details that his wife shared are true, but Reese definitely knows what it takes to build a football team.

      That said, this sounds like someone who couldn’t wait to kick a team while its down and Sally took advantage of the opportunity after the Patriots (her husband’s new team) dismantled the Titans last Sunday. Either way, Fisher’s time in Tennessee seems to be running out. His team gave up on him two weeks ago.

      College Football Picks & Predictions: Week 8

      No. 1 Florida at Mississippi State, 7:30PM ET
      After a hard-fought win over LSU two weeks ago and a gift-wrapped (courtesy of the officials) victory over Arkansas last week, Florida will try to remain undefeated against a Mississippi State team that has had the Gators’ number in Starkville. Florida has dropped their last four games in Starkville and hasn’t won there since 1985. The Gators are too good defensively for the Bulldogs to pull off an upset, but with Florida’s lack of offensive firepower, Mississippi State will keep this game close until the end. Bulldogs head coach Dan Mullen is a former offensive coordinator at Florida, so his knowledge of the Gators’ program will aid him on Saturday but in the end, Mississippi State doesn’t have enough depth to beat Florida this season. Tim Tebow and company haven’t exactly been lighting up the scoreboard, so I like the Bulldogs to cover.
      Odds: Florida –22.5
      Prediction: Florida 27, Mississippi State 13.

      No. 13 Penn State at Michigan, 3:30PM ET
      The Nittany Lions haven’t won in Ann Arbor since 1996, which is why the point spread is so low in this matchup. But Penn State has won three straight by a combined score of 107-20 since their home loss to Iowa and they’ll be looking for a measure of revenge against a Michigan team that has had their number on the road. The Wolverines are too inconsistent on offense to hang with the Lions for four quarters, especially if they have trouble running the ball against PSU’s solid front seven. Offensively for the Nittany Lions, Evan Royster and Darryl Clark will keep the chains moving against a Michigan defense that has trouble getting off the field on third down. This won’t be a blow out because it’s in Ann Arbor, but Penn State will continue its winning ways.
      Odds: Penn State –4.
      Prediction: Penn State 20, Michigan 13.
