Padraig Harrington wins PGA Championship

With a final round of 3-under-par 67, Padraig Harrington won the 90th PGA Championship Sunday by two strokes over Sergio Garcia.

Harrington shot a 32 on the back nine, just as he did at Royal Birkdale last month, and he came up with three big putts down the stretch. He made a 12-foot par on the 16th to catch Sergio Garcia and Ben Curtis, took the lead with an 8-foot birdie on the par-3 17th, then closed out the Spaniard with an 18-foot par for a two-shot victory.

“I think I was willing them into the hole at that stage,” Harrington said. “You have to get focused and give it a go.”
The Irishman ended Europe’s 78-year drought in the PGA Championship, and he joined Tiger Woods, Nick Price and Walter Hagen as the only players to win the final two majors in the same year. Woods did it twice, in 2000 and 2006.

What a two years for Harrington. He won the 2007 U.S. Open, the 2008 U.S. Open and now the 2008 PGA Championship. Garcia was one of the early favorites to win the PGA Championship this year, but Harrington stuck around long enough and played well down the stretch to pick up his fifth career tour win.

Now if only Joey Harrington could play football as well as his cousin plays golf. Then the sports world would be taking about the Harrington’s instead of the Manning, Bonds and Andretti families. Or not…

Matt Ryan impressive in debut

Had the chance to watch the Jaguars-Falcons preseason game Saturday night and was very impressed by Atlanta rookie quarterback Matt Ryan. He not only had good numbers (9 for 15, 113 yards, 1 TD), but also looked poised in the pocket and played more like a vet than a rookie. Behind solid performances from starters Maurice Jones-Drew and David Garrard, the Jags beat the Falcons 20-17.

The Falcons have a good dilemma on their hands when it comes to Ryan. He clearly outplayed Chris Redman (the incumbent starter at quarterback), but with the team in rebuilding mode this year, should Ryan start as a rookie?

While reviewing the Falcons’ current talent (especially along the offensive line), the answer should be no, Ryan shouldn’t start in 2008. It’s unwise to start a rookie QB on a bad team, especially one with a suspect offensive line. The Falcons don’t have to look any further than who is on their current roster and backup Joey Harrington for a perfect example of what could happen when a rookie QB starts for a poor team.

But one of the reasons the Falcons took Ryan with the third overall pick in 2008 draft instead of tabbing Brian Brohm or Chad Henne in later rounds is because Ryan was arguably the most NFL-ready quarterback. He doesn’t have the strongest arm or best physical tools, but he’s a natural born leader and is cool under pressure. In other words, Ryan has shown in the past that he could probably handle being a rookie starter. And with players like Michael Turner, Jerious Norwood and Roddy White, it’s not like he doesn’t have any weapons at his disposal.

It’s only been one preseason game and thus it’s far too early to deem Ryan a starter. But Saturday night was a good start and if he continues to progress throughout August, he may force the Falcons’ hand to start him in Week 1.

Boom Goes the Dynamite

Ali G interviews David Beckham and Posh Spice

Every time I see that “Boom Goes the Dynamite” clip I cringe and I can’t help but feel awful for the young man…but I just can’t look away.

Poor bastard.

Who’s the hotter sportscaster?

The SPORTS CUCUMBER debates who’s the hotter sportscaster – Melissa Stark, Erin Andrews or that Crazy Hot French Chick?

A heated debate arose tonight about who the hottest sportscaster is. We decided to toss in Melissa Stark (in her prime), inappropriately dressed Erin Andrews, and that wicked hot French chick from some French television station. Additionally, for your sake, you can decide to merely take the field of anyone from ESPN deportes…we wouldn’t hold it against you.

My vote: Stark’s upper body region, Andrews’ backside and Crazy Hot Frech Chick’s face.
