Joe Johnson may wait to make final decision

Joe Johnson gets it. He has a max offer from the Hawks on the table, but hasn’t agreed to sign it just yet. He wants to see which big-name free agents land where, to see if there’s a secondary or tertiary role for him on a championship contender.

Sources said Johnson was still considering whether it would be a better career move to play in New York or Chicago, and his ultimate decision would hinge upon which of the top free agents make commitments to those teams.

Johnson’s decision is this — would he rather be the best player on a good-but-not-great Atlanta team or the second- or third-best player on a Finals-caliber team?

Maybe he’s reading the LeBron/Wade tea leaves and realizes that LeBron’s ego may not accept the perception that he needed Wade to win a title. Johnson is the next-best shooting guard on the market, and would be a decent fit alongside LeBron in New York, New Jersey or Chicago.

Writers like to throw around the phrase “leaving $30 million on the table” when referring to home/away max contracts, but that number is misleading. Through the first five years of the deal, the difference is ‘only’ $4 million. It’s that (extra) sixth year that makes up most of the difference in the total value of the contract, but players would presumably still be able to re-sign for a good amount of money. So really, the difference in the home/away contracts is this:

Diff = $4 million + $25.3 million – E

where:

E = expected value of first year of next contract

For a player like Johnson, who would be 33 after the final year of a five-year contract, the value of E would be quite a bit less than someone like LeBron, who would be 30 after the final year of a five-year deal. Assuming both players stay healthy, Johnson would be leaving more money on the table than LeBron would by signing a max deal with an away team.

Bill Simmons rips Stephen A. Smith

Before free agency started, Stephen A. Smith reported that a LeBron/Wade/Bosh combo in Miami was pretty much a done deal.

As everyone knows, I reported last week on my morning drive show on Fox Sports Radio that LeBron James would join Dwayne Wade in Miami and take Chris Bosh with him to join the Heat.

Now, of course, that trio joining forces in Miami doesn’t seem to have legs, and Bill Simmons had some fun at Smith’s expense on his Twitter feed:

Stephen A. Smith is reporting that Stephen A. Smith’s report was incorrect. http://stephena.com/?p=953

Oldest trick in book: Report something is done, and if you’re wrong, claim it WAS done but something last minute derailed it. Child please.

What is Simmons talking about? Here’s what Smith said ‘derailed’ the deal:

At the moment, that is still very possible, but there’s been a potentially huge monkey wrench thrown into the equation — with (understandable) greed on the part of Bosh being the main culprit.

It was shocking news at the time, so it’s not a huge surprise that the report seems to have fallen apart at the seams.

What’s interesting is that Simmons has been silent on Dan Le Batard’s report that there was a trade in place bringing Chris Bosh to Miami.

Details of Georgia athletic director’s DUI arrest embarrassing to say the least

When the athletic director of a major university gets arrested for DUI, it’s embarrassing for all parties involved.

When the athletic director of a major university gets arrested for DUI, bargains with the police officer to let him go, is riding with a younger women who isn’t his wife in the car and also has her underwear on his lap at the top of being pulled over, it’s really, really embarrassing.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has the details of Georgia athletic director Damon Evans’ June 30th DUI arrest:

Evans, who admitted to drinking three Vodka cocktails, began bargaining with the trooper as soon as he realized he might be placed under arrest. “I am not trying to bribe you but I’m the athletic director of the University of Georgia,” Evans said.

The arrest report, released at 4:55 p.m. Friday of a holiday weekend, reveals several embarrassing details for the 40-year-old Evans, whose lucrative new 5-year contract went into effect Thursday.

The passenger in Evans’ car, 28-year-old Courtney Fuhrmann, was being “very loud and obnoxious and was obviously intoxicated,” Cabe wrote. She repeatedly got out of the car, ignoring the trooper’s instructions, before she was handcuffed and charged with disorderly conduct, according to the incident report.

“I apologize and don’t want to use my influence but she is trying to protect me,” Evans told Cabe. Furmann remained “combative,” the trooper wrote, and after Evans refused to take a breath test he was arrested.

Wait, the story gets better.

The trooper, who noted that Evans had a pair of red panties between his legs, asked the athletic director “what her panties were doing in his side of the seat. He stated, ‘She took them off and I held them because I was just trying to get her home.’ ”

Evans told the trooper “there was nothing there” between him and the Buckhead woman “because he had a wife and family.”

Evans appeared relaxed when first stopped by the trooper. “I feel pretty good,” he told the trooper, then “smiled and laughed for no apparent reason.” Cabe said Evans had “red, bloodshot, watery eyes and droopy eyelids” and he detected “a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage.”

The Nebraska native asked the trooper to let him off with a warning.

“I told him I don’t issue warnings for DUI,” Cabe replied.

Evans tried again: “I don’t want you to use who I am but I would just ask that you take me to a motel.”

After he was arrested, the father of two — who refused a Breathalyzer — told the trooper, “We go through life and we all drink and jump in a car.”

As if things weren’t bad enough for Evans, he was the one who also did a DUI prevention public service announcement video that ran throughout Sanford Stadium during Georgia home football games last year.

Everyone makes mistakes, but I don’t see how Evans can keep his job after this. Georgia showed video of this guy telling thousands of students last year not to drink and drive and then he gets busted for the same crime. He looks like a giant hypocrite and I wonder what would happen if a student athlete were to be arrested for the same thing. What kind of punishment would he face? Would he be allowed to stay on the team?

Maybe UGA will stand by Evans and set an example that people deserve second chances. But the details of this situation might be too embarrassing for the university to allow him to keep his job. Not only was he driving drunk, but he was also riding around with a chick’s panties between his legs. Oh, and he’s married with two children and the women he was traveling with wasn’t his wife.

Yiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiikes.

UFC 116 Predictions

The Ultimate Fighting Championship puts on UFC 116: Lesnar vs. Carwin tonight from Las Vegas, which features arguably the biggest heavyweight title fight in the history of the organization. Here are my thoughts on tonight’s card.

UFC Heavyweight Championship – Brock Lesnar (4-1) vs. Shane Carwin (12-0) – These two have very similar builds and styles but the key in this fight will be Lesnar’s ability to get the fight to the ground. If the fight stays standing, Carwin has the edge. Carwin should be able to stay off his back and land a big punch to earn the KO win in the first or second round. While Lesnar is a stud, he is still green to MMA and never fought someone with the power that Carwin has. Look for Lesnar to learn a big lesson tonight.

UFC Middleweight Bout – Yoshihiro Akiyama (13-1) vs. Chris Leben (20-6) – Leben deserves some credit for taking this fight just a few weeks after competing, but it should be somewhat easy for Akiyama to get him to the ground and submit him after a couple of rounds of work. Look for Akiyama to win by choke in round two.

UFC Welterweight Bout – Chris Lytle (38-17-4) vs. Matt Brown (13-8) – Both of these guys are tough as nails, but Lytle has the edge in striking technique and probably in wrestling as well. Look for him to control Brown and land some big punches to earn a decision victory in what could be Fight of the Night.

UFC Light Heavyweight Bout – Krzysztof Soszynski (20-10-1) vs. Stephan Bonnar (14-7) – This is a rematch of a bout from UFC 110 where Soszynski won when Bonnar was cut by a head butt. After some dispute, Bonnar gets his rematch, but he was losing the first fight before the cut anyway. Look for Soszynski to continue what he started and win a decision win over Bonnar.

UFC Lightweight Bout – George Sotiropoulos (12-2) vs. Kurt Pellegrino (21-4) – Sotiropoulos has emerged as a solid lightweight due to his grappling and submission skills. Pellergrino is a tough guy, but he isn’t quite at the level as his opponent. Look for this fight to spend most of the time on the ground, where George will control the fight and finish with a submission in the third round.

Robaire Smith latest Brown to get caught with loaded gun at airport

Note to self: Never go to the airport with a defensive linemen from the Cleveland Browns, because chances are they’ll get caught with a loaded gun in their carry-on bag.

From the Cleveland Plain Dealer:

Browns defensive Robaire Smith, who was with fellow defensive lineman Shaun Rogers when he was arrested for having a loaded gun in his carry-on at the airport, is now facing charges for the same thing, the Flint Journal reported today.

But if you’re wondering why Smith didn’t learn from Rogers’ mistake, Smith’s incident happened first.

Smith, 32, was going through security at Bishop Airport in Flint, Mich. on Nov. 6 when a loaded gun was found in his carry-on. Rogers was arrested April 1st after a loaded gun was found in his bag at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. He pleaded not guilty and is awaiting a court date.

Like Rogers, Smith told airport security he forgot the gun was in his bag. The gun was confiscated and he was released pending further investigation. Leyton issued the charge on Thursday, misdemeanor possession of a firearm in a sterile area of a commercial airport. It carries a maximum sentence of one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

This is outstanding. You wouldn’t even see this kind of story play out in a movie because people would think it’s too ridiculous and unrealistic. Yet this is all true! All of it!

I would have loved to have seen Smith’s face when Rogers was busted with his gun:

“Wait…you too?! Dude, the same thing happened to me like five months ago! Yeah, no, I’m totally serious – same exact thing.”

I’ll pose the same question here as I did when Rogers was arrested: How could anyone forget that they have a loaded freaking weapon on them in an airport? I freak out when I think my toothpaste tube is too big and I have to carry it on a plane, yet these guys completely forget that they’re packing heat. Un-real.
