Top 10 Miami Hurricanes in the NFL

The Love of Sports ranked the top 10 Miami Hurricane players currently in the NFL (with YouTube highlight clips, by the way).

2. Reggie Wayne, Wide Receiver
Wayne was a rare four-year starter at Miami and set a school record with 173 career receptions. This wide receiver’s been an integral part of the Colts’ vaunted aerial attack since the team drafted him in 2001, and his receptions have increased in each of his seven seasons in the league. He was named to his first Pro Bowl in 2006 and followed it up with 104 receptions for a league-leading 1,510 yards last season. He’s recently supplanted Marvin Harrison as Peyton Manning’s favorite target and hasn’t missed a game since 2002.

1. Ed Reed, Safety
Reed set Miami’s all-time interception record while leading the Canes to a national championship in 2001. He’s now the best defensive player on a Ravens unit that’s surrendered the second-fewest yards per game this season. He reads quarterbacks as well as any safety in the league and is regularly among the league leaders in interceptions. He’s made four consecutive Pro Bowls and was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2004. Good ole #20’s also a menace on special teams, where he’s blocked four punts in his career and returned one for a touchdown last season as well.

It’s amazing how many good NFL players the Canes have produced over the years.

NFL Photos of the Week: Week 5

Here are a few of my favorite photos from Week 5 action. You can see a full slideshow of larger versions on NFL.com.

I’m not a fan of Randy Moss, but the league is better off when he’s playing his best ball. After Matt Cassel’s first couple of starts, many were wondering if he had the arm strength to hit Moss with the deep ball. I like photos that capture more than just a single play. This one also answers a question that was plaguing the Patriots and their fans.

The Texans/Colts game turned out to be one of the most exciting finishes of the day due in no small part to Reggie Wayne’s terrific one-handed touchdown catch. Wayne is clearly one of the best (and most consistent) wideouts in the game and this photo captures his immense ability.

Sage Rosenfels would probably like to forget Sunday’s game against the Colts. He had a chance to take hold of the starting job in Houston, but he managed to give the game away with two fumbles and an interception in a miserable fourth quarter. This picture captures his boneheaded decision to go airborne as the Texans tried to put the game away.

Throughout his career, Donald Driver has been one of the most consistently underrated wideouts in the game. This catch against the Falcons looked like it was going to be knocked away or even intercepted, but Driver out muscled Erik Coleman for the ball.

The Redskins have been one of the biggest surprises of this young season, and much of their success is due to the steady running of Clinton Portis. His game was on display against the Eagles, as the Redskins utilized his power running as an effective deterrent to the Eagles’ blitz happy defense.

The Packers are now 2-3 and this week’s loss to the Falcons signifies just how far Green Bay has to go. The tackling was sloppy and they hurt themselves with too many mental mistakes and penalties. It’s tough to see my favorite team in this position, but the picture captures the Packers’ current ineptitude.

Fantasy Fallout, Week 1: Bears/Colts

Bears 29 @ Colts 13
The Bears surprised the Colts with an effective running game and good defense…Rookie Matt Forte (26 touches, 141 yards, 1 TD) had a terrific debut and flashed breakaway speed that many didn’t think he had. Chicago will face better rush defenses than the Colts, but Forte still looks like the real deal…Unsurprisingly, the Bears’ tight ends, Desmond Clark (2-46) and Greg Olsen (2-36), led the team in receiving…Devin Hester’s debut as a full-time wideout (1-7) was disappointing…Peyton Manning (257 passing yards, 1 TD) finished with pretty good numbers, but he was inaccurate early, and that got the Colts in a hole…Marvin Harrison was solid (8-76) in his return, and after a slow start, Reggie Wayne had a big game (10-86-1)…Dallas Clark (1-8) left the game with an injury and did not return…Anthony Gonzalez was very involved, catching five passes for 48 yards…Joseph Addai (13 touches, 47 yards) was bottled up all game, and had to leave in the second half with a head injury.
