Santonio Holmes found with the marijuana, out Sunday

Mike Tomlin said today that Santonio Holmes will not play Sunday due to an incident involving “the marijuana”…a.k.a. weed…ganja…grass…Mary Jane…

Pittsburgh police charged Steelers wide receiver Santonio Holmes with possession of marijuana Thursday afternoon.

According to police, Holmes was driving a sport utility vehicle with out-of-state license plates near Mellon Arena. The vehicle matched the description of one linked to a crime, so officers made an investigatory stop.

“When they pulled him over, they found there was a smell of burnt marijuana in the vehicle,” said Sgt. James Vogel of the Pittsburgh Police Department. “Mr. Holmes was very cooperative with officers and turned over some items to us and was subsequently summoned for those items. A couple of marijuana blunts.”

Police said Holmes turned over three marijuana cigars. Officers charged Holmes with one misdemeanor count of possession of a small amount of marijuana. He was given a summons to court and released.

Vogel said Holmes was very cooperative, respectful and wasn’t impaired. He thinks that should be taken into account when it comes to any potential action taken against him by the Steelers and the NFL.

From the story, it sounds like Sgt. Vogel is a Steeler fan.

From a fantasy perspective, Nate Washington gets a big bump for those owners needing a quick fix at wide receiver. It is not clear at this point what, if any, action the NFL will take in this matter.

Couch Potato Alert: 10/24

Oklahoma State vs. Texas
Top-ranked Texas has won 10 straight games against OSU and have staged some incredible comeback victories during this streak. In 2004, Oklahoma State led 35-7 before surrendering 49 straight points to the Longhorns. In 2005, Texas trailed 28-9 late in the third quarter, only to rally and win. Last year, the Longhorns came back from a 35-14 deficit late in the fourth quarter to win on a field goal as time expired. This season, the Cowboys are 7-0 and are in the top 10 for the first time since 1988, but are they mature enough to finish a game against Texas? Regional coverage begins at 3:30 PM ET Saturday on ABC.

Penn State vs. Ohio State
A win on Saturday night could put Penn State in prime position to finish the season undefeated and earn no worse than their first Rose Bowl berth since the 1994 season. The best matchup on the field could be between the Nittany Lions offensive line vs. the Buckeyes defensive front. Penn State is the No. 1 rushing offense (235 yards per game) in the Big Ten, while Ohio State has the No. 1 rushing defense (97 yards per game) in the conference. And the Nittany Lions are trying to win in Columbus for the first time since 1978. Let the pushing and shoving begin. National coverage begins at 8:00 PM ET Saturday on ABC. The World Series
The World Series could become the wet series this weekend when it shifts to Philadelphia. The National Weather Service latest forecast predicts a 90 percent chance of rain on Saturday. Major League Baseball officials acknowledged that Philadelphia is going to get rain, but the main question for them is how long? Game Three is Saturday at 8 PM ET and Game Four is on Sunday at 8 PM ET; all World Series games are on Fox.

New York Giants vs. Pittsburgh Steelers
They first met as rookies in 2004, Eli Manning and Ben Roethlisberger have led their teams to Super Bowl victories and both appear to be in good shape for another title run this season. Roethlisberger developed faster at the quarterback position and led the Steelers to three straight road wins en route to a Super Bowl title in 2005. Two seasons later, Manning did the same, guiding the Giants to three road playoff wins before defeating the previous undefeated New England Patriots in the Super Bowl last season. Manning’s New York Giants travel to Heinz Field to take on Big Ben’s Pittsburgh Steelers in a rare matchup of 5-1 teams this Sunday. Coverage begins at 4:15 PM ET on Fox.

Bengals fan punched in the face, knocked down stairs during game

As if Cincinnati Bengal fans haven’t suffered enough this season thanks to their winless team, apparently they’re getting physically abused in the stands, too.

A 48-year-old Miamisburg man says he was punched in the side of his face after trading barbs with Steelers fans sitting behind him in the north end zone Sunday. The force of the blow knocked Randy Reed down the concrete stairs. He woke up bloodied in the security office. Reed broke his wrist and suffered from cuts and bruises on his face and nose.

The attack highlights a growing problem in the NFL – safety. It was a hot topic before the season started. In August, the Bengals addressed the issue by expanding their 2-year-old fan conduct policy to include behavior outside of the stadium. The team created the 381-JERK line in 2006, a number fans can call or text to report bad behavior.

The Bengals are standing behind Reed. Director of Business Development, Bob Bedinghaus, says the team will do everything they can to find out who hit him. They even offered him tickets to a future game, but Reed turned them down, saying he would never take his wife or daughter back. Bedinghaus says he would “absolutely consider” Paul Brown a safe place to watch football.

I wouldn’t take free tickets to see the Bengals either.

Did Ravens have bounty on Mendenhall, Ward?

Baltimore Ravens’ defender Terrell Suggs recently said on a radio show that he had his teammates had a “bounty” on Steeler players Rashard Mendenhall and Hines Ward.

During the “2 Live Stews” syndicated radio show on Oct. 17, when he was asked, “Did you all put a bounty out on that young man [Mendenhall],” Suggs replied, “Definitely. The bounty was out on him and the bounty was out on [Ward] — we just didn’t get him between the whistles.”

Also during the interview, Suggs called Ward “a dirty player” and “a cheap-shot artist. … We got something in store for him.”

Ray Anderson, the NFL’s executive vice president of football operations, said the league is looking into the comments.

Suggs later backpedaled:

“There wasn’t any bounty,” Suggs said, according to the newspaper. “He [the talk show host] asked me if there was a bounty and I just said I’m going to keep a watch on the guy. He [Ward] broke some guy’s jaw last week, and he tried to cheap shot JJ [Jarret Johnson]. He has also cheap-shotted Ed Reed. We’re just going to be on alert the next time we play him.”

I think comments like these are blown way out of proportion. Do we always have to hold what players say to the absolute literal meaning? Are we all really that naïve to think that Suggs and other players aren’t thinking to themselves before a game, “If I get a good shot on Hines Ward today, I’m going to take it”? Football is a physical game and players take a ‘kill or be killed’ attitude out to the field. Granted, some players are dirty and will take cheap shots, but a lot of the time these comments are said in jest to get fired up for a game.

You don’t think Suggs and the other Ravens want to pop Ward after he did this a few years ago? Of course they do. Saying they had a “bounty” on him was extreme, but again, I think this situation is being blown out of proportion. That said, I’m not surprised that the league is looking into it; they have an obligation to make sure no foul play is being carried out.
