Why did Shaq sign with the Celtics?

Bill Simmons’ latest column delves into ‘chewed-on theories’ and one question he tries to answer is why Shaq would sign with the C’s for the league minimum. He believes it goes back to Kobe’ response after Game 7 of the Finals when he was asked what this title meant to him.

His response?

“I got one more than Shaq! You can take that to the bank.”

O’Neal signed with Boston because “when I close my book at the end of the day, it’s all about winning and nothing else.” This was someone who told a teammate before the final game of his 2009 Suns season — when they had just been eliminated from playoff contention — that he “needed to start getting in shape for my reality show.” Game 82 and you need to get in shape? Huh? Now you suddenly care about winning titles again? Now you’re fine with swallowing your dignity to be a spare part, a minimum guy, an afterthought, someone with no security at all? Just to chase a ring? When you already have four?

My theory: I think Kobe’s postgame routine got back to Shaq. I think it pissed him off. I think it got his competitive juices flowing for the first time in years. I think he realized Boston was his best chance to tie Kobe at five. I think he wants this more than anything. I think he shows up next month in surprisingly good shape, and I think we’ll be saying in November, “Wow, that Shaq signing may have been a great move by Boston!” And I think this will happen for only one reason: because Shaq hates Kobe and Kobe hates Shaq. Just a theory.

It certainly seems reasonable. My sense is that Shaq is not happy with the way things went in Phoenix or Cleveland and is hoping to make him relevant again for one more playoff run. Of course, he’d love to beat the Heat and the Lakers along the way.

NBA announces Christmas Day schedule

Mar. 04, 2010 - Miami, FL - Florida, USA - United States - Miami---fl-heat-04d----NBA basketball with the Los Angeles Lakers visiting the Miami Heat at the American Airlines Arena. Miami's Dwyane Wade works past ex-heat player now Laker Lamar Odom. Robert Duyos, Sun Sentinel.

The NBA season will open on 10/26 with the Heat/Celtics and Rockets/Lakers on TNT. The Heat will face the Magic on 10/29, which looks like Miami’s home opener.

The Christmas Day lineup is headlined by the Heat @ Lakers and Celtics @ Magic. Also, there are matchup between the Bulls/Knicks, Thunder/Nuggets and the Blazers/Warriors to round out the day.

The entire schedule will be released on 8/10.

The Miami Herald has the details…

The Heat will open the 2010-11 season against the Boston Celtics on Oct. 26 at TD Garden, multiple league sources said Monday night.

The league will release a portion of the schedule Tuesday night during an hour-long special on NBA TV.

During the show, matchups will be announced for TNT’s opening night double-header, as well as a slate of Christmas Day games on ABC and ESPN, and games played on the Jan. 17 Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

The Heat-Celtics game opens a TNT double-header that will showcase the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Lakers in the second game. ESPN was working to secure the rights to Miami’s home opener, which will be either the following night (Wednesday) or that Friday.

I like it. Send the Super Friends to one of the league’s most hostile environments to play one of the league’s best defensive teams. This game has the potential to be a defensive battle as the Heat try to work out the kinks offensively.

I’m hoping for a Lakers/Heat matchup on Christmas, though a Lakers/Celtics rematch would be entertaining as well. It would also be nice if all of the Heat’s games against the Celtics, Bulls and Magic were on national television.

Teams can only play a maximum of 34 games on national television and the Heat are fully expected to reach that number.

Take Sasha Vujacic…please!

Brian Windhorst is reporting that the Lakers are trying to move Sasha Vujacic:

Sources said Lakers are trying to trade Sasha Vujacic wfirst round pick to get his salary off books. They tried to do it for Delonte West.

IMO, Vujacic is hands down the most annoying player in the league. If I were running a team, the Lakers would have to include Pau Gasol or his girlfriend, Maria Sharapova, in the deal to get me to take on his contract/personality.

After a reasonably decent 2007-08 — 8.8 ppg, 44% 3PT — Sasha averaged 2.8 ppg and 31% from 3PT last season. The only productive thing he did all year was get under Goran Dragic’s skin in the Suns series, and even that almost backfired.

Obligatory pics (of Maria) after the jump, of course.
