      Redskins to trade up to No. 1 spot to take Bradford?

      Oh, the rumor mill is churning now that the NFL scouting combine has kicked off.

      In the wake of Adam Schefter’s prediction that the Rams are set to take quarterback Sam Bradford with the No. 1 pick, ESPN.com is reporting that the Redskins may want to trade up to the top spot so that they could nab the Oklahoma product.

      With word that the Rams might be taking Sam Bradford No. 1 overall this April, the other team that thinks quite highly of him risks missing out. We’ve been hearing for a while now that the Redskins value Bradford as a potential franchise QB, and he would not get past their spot in the first round.

      Speaking to the press at the draft combine, Rams GM Billy Devaney indicated that the team was still weighing the merits of Ndamukong Suh vs. Gerald McCoy, as well as Bradford vs. Jimmy Clausen. In order for the Redskins to ensure that they could get Bradford — and all indications seem to indicate that they value him ahead of Clausen — they might need to trade up to that No. 1 slot. Bradford’s price tag as the No. 1 overall pick might not be an issue for perennial big spender Daniel Snyder, especially if Mike Shanahan sells him on Bradford as a legit stud.

      If the Rams have Clausen rated ahead of Bradford, this makes sense. But if they don’t, then there’s no way St. Louis is going to pass on a franchise quarterback that they like in order to take a franchise quarterback that they kind of like. The Rams hold the cards here – not the Redskins.

      That said, if the Rams have Bradford and Clausen rated similarly, then it makes sense that St. Louis would want to trade down to acquire more picks and still have a shot to take a franchise quarterback at No 4 (which is where the Redskins pick).

      It’s way to early to tell what intentions the Rams have with the top pick, but I love that the NFL draft rumor train is now picking up steam.

      In other Redskins-related news, Mike Shanahan indicated on Friday that Clinton Portis will be his running back in 2010, despite rumors that the team would like to rid themselves of the 28-year-old back.

      Lions actively shopping the No. 2 pick?

      According to NFL network’s Jason La Confora, the Lions are actively shopping the No. 2 overall pick and have already been in contact with several teams.

      I sound like a broken record every year, but it’s a must that I write this: Trading out of the top of the draft isn’t easy. Unless there’s a can’t miss prospect in the top 3, then teams selecting that high have a difficult time finding a trade partner. The Browns were able to do it last year at No. 5, but the Jets desperately wanted Mark Sanchez so it was a perfect match.

      There might be a team that wants to move up in order to nab Ndamukong Suh or one of the quarterbacks (Sam Bradford or Jimmy Clausen), but even when teams are motivated to move up it’s still hard to put a trade package together. It was easy for the Browns and Jets to work out a deal involving draft picks and players because Eric Mangini was already familiar with New York’s roster and knew which players he wanted.

      We’ll see. I’m certainly not suggesting that the Lions won’t have success trading the pick, but again, the odds are against them. But teams usually have success when they trade down, so Detroit fans have to at least appreciate the fact that their team is trying to maximize its selections on draft day.

      Notre Dame’s Jimmy Clausen to turn pro

      ESPN.com reports that Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen has decided to forgo his senior season and enter the NFL draft.

      “After the season, in talking to my parents and obviously Coach Weis, I just feel it’s the right time,” Clausen told ESPN.com on Monday before a scheduled 2 p.m. ET news conference in South Bend. “Coach Weis told me whether he was going to be here or not be here, it was time for me to go. He thought I’ve improved so much since I came to Notre Dame. So, I’m taking his advice, and I’m going to head out.”

      “It’ll probably be just like going from high school to college, but a lot faster than college is. Obviously, being under Coach Weis, being in a pro-style offense, knowing the terminologies, will help me. But the biggest thing will probably be just getting in the playbook and mentally preparing myself to do everything I can to get on the field as quick as I can and help whichever team I go to win.”

      Mel Kiper has Clausen rated as the top quarterback on his big board and the fourth best prospect overall.

      He’ll unfairly be compared to Brady Quinn because they played in the same offense at Notre Dame, but at least in my opinion, Clausen is a more polished prospect now than Quinn was when he entered the draft. In terms of raw talent and upside, Clausen beats Quinn but that obviously doesn’t mean that he’ll be a better pro.

      With Sam Bradford, Jake Locker, Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow set to join Clausen in April, the 2010 NFL Draft will have plenty of intrigue surrounding the quarterback class.

      Did Notre Dame bail on bowl game for fear of getting embarrassed?

      Hey, I get it – it’s been a rough year in South Bend. The team was yet again a disappointment, expectations weren’t met and the head coach was fired after months/years of speculation that he would eventually be kicked to the curb.

      But if you’re Notre Dame, why not accept a bid to go to a bowl game this year?

      On Friday, ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick said that the school has decided against going to a bowl game with a 6-6 record, citing that without a head coach and offensive coordinator, the school wouldn’t have an experienced play caller for the game. Swarbrick also pointed out that the school would likely have lost money because their only option would have been a minor bowl.

      The offensive coordinator excuse is logical, but the bit about losing money holds little water given how much loot Notre Dame just threw at Charlie Weis to get the hell out of town.

      That said, one would think that the Irish seniors would want to strap it up for one last game together and try to go out as winners. If it were up to the players, I would have to assume that they would want to play – especially players like Jimmy Clausen and Golden Tate, both of whom might be heading for the NFL draft in April.

      Report: Notre Dame’s Clausen punched by fan

      According to a report by ESPN.com, Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen was punched in the face by an irate fan outside a South Bend resturant early Sunday morning.

      The report states that Clausen has a swollen eye from the incident, although he’s still expected to play this weekend against Stanford.

      That person said Clausen was “sucker-punched” by a fan as he left an establishment after having dinner with his parents.
      The fan allegedly said something to Clausen and/or a female acquaintance.

      A South Bend police spokesman said that no police reports were filed over the weekend involving Clausen, according to the Chicago Tribune.

      The newspaper also reported that the name of the bar was CJ’s and that a bartender at the establishment said that Clausen had been there with family members and other Irish upperclassmen after Notre Dame’s loss to Connecticut on Senior Day.

      If you’re an Irish fan, why punch Clausen? Out of all the players and coaches that have under performed on that team this season, Clausen would be the last guy you would punch, right? (I’m being factious by the way – fans shouldn’t be touching any player or coach no matter how much Charlie Weis screws the pooch.)

      Either way, things are definitely getting a little testy in South Bend these days.
