Couch Potato Alert: 8/15

– I do not know if you heard but Brett Favre has un-retired. And he will be playing this season in New York for the Jets. Sorry ESPN, his first game back will be on the NFL Network on Saturday at 8 p.m. EST. Maybe Rachel Nichols can give updates from the sidelines on Favre’s progress in grasping the Jets offense for ESPN News.

– The men’s 100-meter finals in track & field take place on Saturday evening. It could be the most competitive event at the Olympics, as all of the contenders have beaten one another in the past. Asafa Powell of Jamaica was defeated by USA’s Tyson Gay at the World Championships so badly that he disappeared from the scene. His countryman, Usain Bolt, returned the favor by beating Gay this past May. All three will run in Beijing, and it might just be the best 10 seconds of the Olympiad.

Michael Phelps is on target to break Mark Spitz’s record of seven gold medals at one Olympic competition. The 100-meter butterfly is this evening, with the 4 x 100 medley relay wrapping up the swimming competition (and Phelps’ quest) on Saturday night.

– The top matchup in baseball this weekend could be a possible playoff preview between the Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers at Chavez Ravine. Both teams made significant additions to improve their chances of playing into October, so this should be a good series.

Brett Favre traded to the New York Jets

Our long national nightmare is finally over! It’s a sad day for Packer fans, as Brett Favre was traded to the Jets.

JP’s Fantasy Spin: With Favre QB’ing the Jets, bump up Jerricho Cotchery, Laveranues Coles and Thomas Jones. QB was one of the Jets’ biggest weak spots, so #4’s arrival is huge for that offense. As for Green Bay, bump Aaron Rodgers back up to wherever you had him before this whole thing started. He has a terrific supporting cast, though he has been spotty in the limited times he’s played. His crown jewel is his solid performance against the Cowboys last season, but now a lot of people seem to be downplaying what he did in that game. Consider him a backup with upside. Greg Jennings, Donald Driver and Ryan Grant all take a little bit of a hit with the news that Favre won’t be their QB.

Brett Favre to be a Buccaneer by the end of the day?

The Tampa Tribune is reporting that Brett Favre could become a Tampa Bay Buccaneer within the next 24 hours.

The Tribune has learned Favre will not stand in the way of a trade from Green Bay to Tampa Bay and the deal is likely to be finalized within 24 hours.

The chances of the trade unraveling are remote and Favre has indicated to the Bucs directly that he is willing to change teams after 16 years of growing his legend in Green Bay.

The Packers, unwilling to deal the 3-time league MVP to an NFC North rival, view the Bucs as a compromise in this ugly impasse. The Bucs view Favre as an upgrade on QB Jeff Garcia, who made the Pro Bowl in 2007 while leading Tampa Bay to an NFC South title.

Once it became clear to Favre that he wasn’t welcome back in Green Bay, he became more flexible in terms of accepting a trade to clubs outside the division. The Bucs have been interested in Favre since last month, when he announced he wanted to play again.

As I’ve written before, I think Favre and Tampa make a great fit. The only issue is whether or not the Packers feel they can get proper compensation and if Favre doesn’t change his mind again. Read between the lines and it seems apparent that he wants to stay in the NFC North. With Tampa residing in the NFC South, what if he gets to the land of pirate ships and wants to back out?

The Bucs better get some insurance on this deal.

Is the end coming for Brett Favre and Packers?

Who’s ready for more Brett Favre! The latest in the Brett Favre drama hour is that he and the Packers seem to be moving closer to a separation, according to FOX Sports.com contributor Jay Glazer.

The two sides are expected to meet again in the morning as they try to work toward a solution palatable to both sides. However, one detail FOXSports.com gathered from the meeting was Favre’s insistence that he did not want his presence to destroy the team’s chemistry. In fact, Favre was adamant that he wanted to do what was in the best interest of the locker room and admitted this distraction was not what his teammates needed.

Another agreement from the meeting was that, despite reports to the contrary, there would not be an open quarterback competition as even Favre felt this would not be in the best interests of the locker room. Thus, Aaron Rodgers is the team’s starting quarterback.

As Favre met with head coach Mike McCarthy and GM Ted Thompson late Monday, the sides were moving toward an agreement to end this circus, but uncertainty remained about what that agreement ultimately will be.

Favre and the team continued to hold the same viewpoints they’ve held for weeks but rather than continuing their stalemate, they have joined in pursuit of a mutually agreeable solution. Whether that solution will entail a trade, a release or another option was not determined in the meeting.

I’ll stand pat on my theory about Favre in ’08 – he will not be a Packer. I’d say the team would be insane to trade him within the division, unless they got Devin Hester, a first round pick and a lifetime supply of Under Armor cleats.

This situation looks like it’s nowhere close to a finale.

Brett Favre to compete for job?

Wow. A source close to the Packers has revealed that the team is going to allow Favre to compete for the starting job.

Another source close to the club, said that the Packers have agreed to allow Favre to compete with Aaron Rodgers for the starting job and he won’t necessarily be the backup this season. Trade talks with Favre have not advanced and coach Mike McCarthy is expected to come up with a plan that will split the practice repetitions with Rodgers.

This is a huge shift from the Packers’ perspective. All along, they’ve been saying that they were going to move on with Aaron Rodgers as their quarterback, but evidently Favre’s (understandable) stubbornness, along with the prospect of the media circus that would ensue once he got to camp, has convinced the team to allow him to try to win his job back.

Regular readers know I am a die-hard Packers fan, and this shift in policy only seems fair. Other than having to deal with the uncertainty each offseason, the Packers’ resistance to Favre’s return never made a whole lot of sense. Cutting him wasn’t an option, as he could go and play for the Vikings. Trading him turned out not to be an option, because Favre wouldn’t meet with the Bucs or the Jets. This is the only fair and equitable course of action.

So now we’ll have a camp battle between a future Hall of Famer (and runner-up in the 2007 MVP voting) versus… Aaron Rodgers. I wonder who is going to win…

By all accounts, Rodgers has looked pretty sharp in camp, though one has to wonder how he’s going to play under this kind of pressure. Favre, assuming he hasn’t lost “it,” should be able to seize his old job back.

Unless, of course, this whole competition is just a farce and the team is planning on giving the job to Rodgers regardless of how either QB plays. Obviously, the preseason games will be vitally important to the public’s perception of the QB battle.

From the POV of a Packer fan, this situation just went from frustrating to interesting in the blink of an eye.

Monday morning update (8/4): The Milwaukee-Journal Sentinel is reporting that the Packers have contacted the Vikings about a potential trade. Just when I thought this was over…
