NFL Week 4 MVP, COY and ROY power rankings

We are a quarter of the way through the NFL season, and there are lots of wacky things happening. The Chiefs are 3-0 and the only undefeated team. That’s a far cry from last year, when the Colts and Saints were unbeaten almost all the way to the end of the 2009 campaign. There are also some interesting candidates emerging for MVP consideration, as well as for Coach of the Year and Rookie of the Year. And like last year, we’ll start to analyze them in power rankings fashion. For this week and maybe the next few, we’ll put this in one post and give three names for each category. Around the halfway point of the season, more candidates will emerge so we will separate things out. Sound good? Right. Let’s go……..

MVP Power Rankings

1. Michael Vick, Philadelphia Eagles—Do we even have to spell this out? He steps in for Kevin Kolb in Week 1 and almost leads the Eagles to victory against the Packers. Then he wins against Detroit and Jacksonville before having his ribs crushed on a meaningless play vs. Washington last Sunday, knocking him out of the game early. Kolb comes back in, and the Eagles lose. Vick is averaging 200 yards passing per game, has 6 TDs and no interceptions, and is also averaging 7.2 yards per rush on 26 carries and one TD on the ground. He has a QB rating of 108.8 while Kolb’s is 71.1. Simply put, this team is dangerous with Vick, and not scaring anyone without him. That’s the very definition of MVP.

2010 NFL Week 5 Picks

MINNEAPOLIS - SEPTEMBER 19: Quarterback Brett Favre of the Minnesota Vikings warms up prior to the start of the game against the Miami Dolphins on September 19, 2010 at Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota. (Photo by Jamie Squire/Getty Images)

The Bills cost me my first perfect weekend in the NFL with their embarrassing display of football against the Jets last Sunday. But I won’t let them ruin my otherwise stellar 3-1 week.

Let’s keep the good times rolling – ah, WOO-HOO!

Packers at. Redskins, 1:00PM ET
The injuries are starting to pile up for Green Bay, who finds itself a 2.5-point favorite in Washington this Sunday. The Redskins were fortunate Michael Vick went down last week and they were able to grind out a win on the road, but that’s not to say that this is a bad football team. They played tough at home against the Cowboys and Texans to start the season and I think they get an outright win this Sunday. Brian Orakpo records at least one sack and spends most of the afternoon tormenting Aaron Rodgers.
THE PICK: REDSKINS +2.5

Vikings at. Jets, 8:30PM ET
This one scares me a little because there’s no doubt Johnny Public is sucking the teet of the Vikings after they acquired Randy Moss on Wednesday. The line opened at 4.5 and is already down to 3.5 and I fear it could be a field goal game by kickoff on Monday night. That said, I love Minnesota here, but I worry about where Brett Favre’s head is at for this one. Will it be on the Jets or will it be…actually, I’ve decided not to finish that sentence.
THE PICK: VIKINGS +3.5

Broncos at. Ravens, 1:00PM ET
The Broncos are far from a great football team and I struggle to even say that they’re good. But they continue to be an underrated play. The Ravens are coming off two straight divisional games and are now laying a touchdown at home against a non-divisional opponent. It’s only natural that Baltimore suffers a letdown this Sunday coming off its huge win over Pittsburgh last week and Denver could take advantage. The Broncos proved last week against the Titans that they can win on the road. I like the dog here.
THE PICK: BRONCOS +7

Jaguars at. Bills, 1:00PM ET
To show that I’m not afraid of the Bills, I’m going right back to the well again this week. This is a trap game of epic proportions. The Jaguars are coming off a dramatic upset of the Colts last Sunday, while the Bills forgot what time their game with the Jets started and were absolutely waxed. So why, oh why, would I take Buffalo and actually lay a point? Because Jacksonville is about to suffer the mother of all letdowns – that’s why. Why has the line gone from Bills +1 to Bills –1? Who the hell is betting on the Bills after last week? Don’t be fooled by the line – take the Bills and lay the point.
THE PICK: BILLS -1

Season Record: 6-5-1

Brett Favre could get in trouble with NFL for allegedly showing his wanker to hot chick

According to a report by Cindy Boren of the Washington Post, the NFL is investigating allegations that Brett Favre sent inappropriate messages and photos to a sideline reporter while he was a member of the Jets.

“We are reviewing the matter,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Friday when asked about reports that Favre left voice mails and texted photos to Jenn Sterger, who now hosts “The Daily Line,” a nightly sports roundup on the Versus network.

Favre was asked about the allegations Thursday during a press conference after the team traded for Randy Moss.

“I’m not getting into that,” Favre said. “I’ve got my hands full with the Jets and trying to get some timing down with our guys. That’s all I’m going to discuss.”

Deadspin broke the original story a couple of months ago and it’s a little surprising to see that the NFL is getting involved. That said, the racy messages and photos could be construed as a form of sexual harassment, so why wouldn’t the league pursue the story, even if it results in a non-issue?

On a side note, the girl Favre allegedly texted his junk to is none other than the Florida State hottie, Jenn Sterger:

So in some respects, Brett is a creepy, old weirdo sending inappropriate photos to a young woman. (Not to mention, he’s also married.)

In other respects, mother may I…

Here’s Brett’s press conference from the other day:

And here are Brett’s voice mails to Jenn:

Hey, maybe he was talking to D’Brickashaw Ferguson. You never know…

Chiefs (3-0) at Colts (2-2), 1:00PM ET
If somebody had said before the season that the Colts wouldn’t be the undefeated team in this matchup, I would have called them a liar and punched them square in the mouth (hey, that’s not nice). The Chiefs have a golden opportunity to prove that they’re for real and have had two weeks to prepare for this game. Of course, this is an Indianapolis team that is still stewing from their last-second loss to the Jaguars last Sunday. If KC can get their running game moving with Thomas Jones and Jamaal Charles, they’ll have a shot to pull off the upset.
Current Point Spread: Colts –8

Packers (3-1) at Redskins (2-2), 1:00PM ET
Thanks to their victory over the Eagles last Sunday, the Redskins are keeping pace in the NFC East. Today it was discovered that Clinton Portis would miss the next 4-6 weeks due to a groin injury, which means Ryan Torain will now be the featured back in D.C. Speaking of backs, the Packers either never considered a trade or failed to pull the trigger in time to acquire Marshawn Lynch from the Bills. Their running game has struggled thus far and the offense continues to be reliant on Aaron Rodgers. If Washington can drum up a decent pass rush, another upset is within its reach.
Current Point Spread: Redskins +2.5

Giants (2-2) at Texans (3-1), 1:00PM ET
The pass rush that helped the Giants beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl four years ago showed up last Sunday night against the Bears. The G-Men will need that type of pressure again this week if they’re going to take down a Texans team that should get Andre Johnson back from injury. Of course, Houston has already proven that it has the capability of being balanced offensively thanks to running back Arian Foster. But can the Texans’ poor pass defense slow Eli Manning this week?
Current Point Spread: Texans –3

Vikings (1-2) at Jets (3-1), 8:30PM ET, Monday
ESPN couldn’t have asked for a better matchup on Monday night. Brett Favre will make his not-so-triumphant return to the Big Apple after retiring his way out of New York following the 2008 season. He’ll have a new weapon at his disposal in Randy Moss, who was acquired from the Patriots on Wednesday. Moss will arrive just in time to face Darrelle Revis, who held him to only two catches a couple of weeks ago when the Jets beat his former team in New York. Of course, Moss also scored twice and will no doubt get plenty of looks from his new quarterback.
Current Point Spread: Jets -4
