      Clemens evidence tests positive for banned substances

      Turns out, Roger Clemens might have been lying all along about not taking performance enhancing drugs. Who would have thought?

      Federal authorities investigating Roger Clemens on perjury charges have found performance-enhancing substances on the drug paraphernalia that his former trainer said he used to inject Clemens, according to people briefed on the case.

      The discovery of the substances could bolster the claims of the trainer, Brian McNamee, that he used the various items — including syringes, vials and gauze pads — to inject Clemens with steroids and human growth hormone.

      If the federal prosecutors move to indict Clemens and seek to use the substances found on the drug paraphernalia as evidence, Clemens’s lawyers are expected to question their authenticity and the chain of custody. Clemens’s lead lawyer, Rusty Hardin, said Monday night that he was not surprised to learn that performance-enhancing substances had been found.

      “Duh,” he said with exaggeration. “Do you really think McNamee was going to fabricate this stuff and not make sure there were substances on there? The fact is Roger never used steroids or H.G.H.”

      Clemens has been an arrogant S.O.B. the moment his name was linked to banned substances so even though it’s painful to back a weasel like McNamee, I’m rooting for the evidence to prove the Rocket has been lying this entire time. They’re both liars, but Clemens has just been so smug this entire time that it would be nice to see him put in his place. By the looks of the comment above, Clemens’ lawyer is arrogant and smug, too.

      Bucs’ linebacker Hayes stabbed by girlfriend

      Tampa Bay Bucs’ linebacker Geno Haynes has had a rough past couple of days.

      Geno HayesThe girlfriend of Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Geno Hayes stabbed him in the head with a pair of scissors and in the neck with a knife, Hillsborough County deputies say.

      Hayes was taken to a hospital by a friend, and he was treated and released, Hillsborough County sheriff’s spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.

      Deputies arrested 19-year-old Shevelle Bagley at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Carter said.
      Bagley was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

      The incident began with an argument Saturday, and Bagley grabbed a pair of scissors, stabbing Hayes and causing a superficial wound to Hayes’ head, Carter said. Hayes got the scissors away from Bagley.

      Then Bagley “grabbed a knife and stabbed him in the neck,” Carter said.

      Bagley’s bail was set at $25,000. She has since been released.

      Dear Lord, Hayes is lucky he wasn’t killed.

      Geno, this is a great time to pack your bags and get the hell out of dodge. It’s probably a safe bet that this isn’t the one to bring home to mom.

      Gonzaga, Siena win

      Good news for the major conference bubble teams — Gonzaga blew out Saint Mary’s in the WCC final and Siena beat Niagra in the MAAC final. Both teams probably would have made the NCAA tourney without winning their conference final, so the fact that there were no surprises is good news for the other bubble teams.

      Saint Mary’s might be in with a 25-6 record, but they lost to the Bulldogs by 25 points, and there are lingering questions about the health of the Gaels’ best player, Patrick Mills, who went 2-16 from the field and scored just five points in the loss. He has posted just 17 points in two games since returning from an injury to his right hand, so if the committee doesn’t feel that he’s up to snuff, Saint Mary’s is very much on the bubble.

      The Big East Championship starts today (BIGEAST.tv) while the Pac-10 and Big 12 tournaments start tomorrow. The Big 10, SEC and ACC tournaments begin on Thursday.

      Lions meet with Baylor OT Jason Smith

      The Lions recently sat down and talked with Baylor offensive tackle Jason Smith.

      Jason SmithThe Lions took a break from free-agent visits Monday to meet with college prospect Jason Smith, an offensive tackle from Baylor who’s among a handful of players vying to be the No. 1 overall selection in April’s draft.

      Smith arrived in Detroit on Sunday and spent most of Monday in Allen Park meeting with front-office officials and coaches.

      Teams are limited to 30 private visits at their own facilities before the draft. So the Lions, with five picks among the first 82, including two first-rounders, figure to host other top candidates the coming weeks. Most draft prospects have yet to take part in pro-day workouts at their college campuses.

      Despite popular belief, if a team meets with a prospect before the draft it usually is a red flag that they won’t be selecting that player. Obviously that’s not the case every single time, but teams usually don’t like to tip their hand as to which prospects they have their eyes on, so they’ll avoid those players like the plague.

      But the Lions realistically have their eye on their players: Smith, Matthew Stafford and Aaron Curry. Now, there could be a sleeper prospect that people are overlooking (Eugene Monroe maybe?), but those appear to be the three players that Detroit is focusing on. That said, it would behoove them to meet with all of those players since they have the No. 1 pick. Nobody selects in front of them in the first round, so it doesn’t make sense to try and throw other teams off. Plus, the Lions have said this entire time that they will negotiate a deal with the player that they will select before the draft. So who knows – maybe Smith is the pick.

      Jaguars’ wideout Matt Jones arrested

      Matt Jones isn’t a smart man.

      Matt JonesJones was called in for random drug test on Feb. 27 as part of his treatment for being caught with cocaine.

      The treatment center received the results late last week and tested positive for alcohol.
      Jones was in court Monday to be sanctioned for using alcohol.

      He admitted to a judge that he drank on Thursday, the day before the test, when he was playing golf with some of his friends.

      The judge set his bond at $150,000.

      If he does make bond, he’ll have to go to treatment for six weeks.

      No man should be crucified for having a few pops with the boys while playing golf. But if you know you could be tested at any point for drugs and/or alcohol and face jail time, why even risk it? This guy was a gigantic waste of a first round pick.
