Steelers make statement by trading Holmes to Jets

In an obvious statement move, the Steelers traded former Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes to the Jets for a fifth-round pick and a half bag of stale Cheetos that were found in the bottom drawer of Rex Ryan’s office desk.

Just to put the trade in perspective, the Jets parted with two players (receiver Chansi Stuckey and linebacker Jason Trusnik), plus two undisclosed draft picks when they acquired Braylon Edwards from the Browns last October. And there’s no question that Holmes has more talent in his right pinkie toe than Edwards has in his entire body.

Make no mistake: Holmes is a top-flight receiver that can stretch the field and be productive in any offense. He’s a freaking coconut (a coconut that may be suspended the first four games next season), but he’s a dangerous deep threat and a true playmaker in every sense of the word. The Jets got a steal in this trade and have gone a long way in upgrading their passing game for Mark Sanchez. Assuming Edwards doesn’t throw a tantrum now that he won’t be the main guy, he and Holmes could do some damage together in the Jets’ offense.

That said, the Steelers don’t care what they got in return for Holmes because it’s clear that they just wanted to rid themselves of the headache. It wasn’t about the compensation for them – it was about cutting their losses and dumping their mess on another team. They certainly failed to get value in this trade, but at least they don’t have to spend the rest of the offseason wondering whether or not Holmes will be suspended at the start of next season. They already have enough to worry about in Ben Roethlisberger – the other turd in their punchbowl this offseason.

It’ll be interesting to see how this trade affects the Steelers’ draft. They vastly need to upgrade the interior of their offensive line, but Hines Ward, Mike Wallace, Antwaan Randle El and Limas Sweed aren’t going to get it done at receiver. They might not target a wideout with their first pick, but they’ll have to address the position at some point during the draft.

Bulls drub Raptors, 104-88, take sole possession of last playoff spot

Derrick Rose led the Bulls with 26-4-7, while Joakim Noah added 18-19-7 as the Bulls rolled past the Chris Bosh-less Raptors on Sunday.

Down only 10 at halftime, I wasn’t very impressed at the lack of energy from a historically energetic Toronto crowd. By the time most fans made it back to their seats, the Raptors were down 19 with 8:00 remaining in the third quarter. This game was crucial to the Raptors’ playoff hopes and the crowd let them down. (In their defense, the team didn’t give them much to cheer for, either.)

So the Bulls have the inside track for the eighth and final playoff spot, but they have a tougher schedule (BOS, CHA) than the Raptors do (DET, NYK). Toronto holds the tiebraker, but it may not matter.

Lights out for Matt Cooke

I’m starting to feel like a select group of NHL players are getting paid under the table to get into fights. Don’t we get a new one every couple of days? Still, who cares? l never tire of them, and their presence on the Internet will only help the sport, I assume.

On a side note, this is how I like my hockey fights. Nothing is dragged out — it’s just short and sweet.

LeBron’s camp thinks he’s staying in Cleveland?

According to Brian Windhorst of The Plain Dealer, LeBron’s camp seems to think that he’s going to re-sign with the Cavs this summer.

After being mostly neutral and downright noncommittal for some time, those closest to James have been altering their view recently. The vibe being sent out from James’ camp — whether it is private conversations or discussions about new business or plans for the near future — is that James currently is leaning strongly toward re-signing with the Cavs.

That may sound vague and, as always, it continues to be fragile. Yet there is no denying the gradual shift within James’ circle and, it is assumed, by James himself.

James has declined to talk publicly about free agency since November. But as one source said, “I have never been so sure that he’s going to stay in Cleveland than I am right now.”

Windhorst is a good beat writer and I believe him when he says he’s getting a different vibe from LeBron’s camp.

LeBron is supposedly a loyal guy, and is from nearby Akron, so it wouldn’t be surprising if he decided to re-sign with the Cavs even if the team flames out again in the postseason. He seems to genuinely enjoy the players on the team and the franchise has treated him well, and that goes a long way.

But if the Cavs lose in the playoffs, would they bother to bring Shaq back for another season? If not, even with his salary off the books, the Cavs would be approximately $17 million over the salary cap. The only way to infuse the team with more (or different) talent would be to swing a trade or use the mid-level exception.

In other words, if this Cavs team doesn’t break through and win a title, I’m not optimistic about the 2011 Cavs or the 2012 Cavs having more luck.

UFC 112 Recap & Reaction

UFC 112 left a memorable mark in the history of the organization for a number of reasons.

First, it was the first UFC held in the Middle East.

Second, it saw one of the biggest upsets in the history of the UFC from a betting stand point.

Third, you saw one man display dominance over another in a fighting sense by literally not fighting.

Many fans and even UFC President Dana White are upset with middleweight champion Anderson Silva for his display against Demian Maia. For those who didn’t see the fight, Silva was so far superior to his opponent that he spent most of the fight taunting him and swearing at him in Portuguese. Silva displayed in the first round that he could simply do whatever he wanted, landing every strike he threw at him while taking no damage. So he then chose to start dancing, standing still with his hands at his arms, and challenging his opponent to hit him in the face rather than overwhelm him and finish the fight. The fight, which lasted 25 minutes when it really had no business going more than 25 seconds, angered the fans to no end and forced White to storm off and not even watch the final round.
