      Report: Tim Floyd to take Arizona job

      So much for those Pitino-to-Tuscon rumors. It looks as if Tim Floyd is poised to take over as head coach at Arizona.

      Tim Floyd will be named basketball coach at Arizona, Mark Asher of Sports 620 KTAR, ESPN’s radio affiliate in Phoenix, is reporting according to multiple sources.

      Floyd met with Arizona athletic director Jim Livengood on Wednesday night to work out the final details of the deal and an announcement is expected Thursday, according to sources.

      Floyd, 55, has spent the last four seasons at USC with an 85-50 record. He led the Trojans to three NCAA tournament appearances — including the Sweet 16 in 2007.

      Floyd previously coached in the NBA with the Chicago Bulls in 1999-2002 and the New Orleans Hornets in 2004.

      He was also the head coach at Iowa State, New Orleans and Idaho.

      Floyd is certainly a proven recruiter (O.J. Mayo, DeMar DeRozan), but I wonder if Arizona fans were expecting a bigger name to come to Tuscon. Rick Pitino recently bought a house there, which fueled speculation that he’d take over as head coach, but apparently sometimes a real estate transaction is just a real estate transaction.

      Report: Bears interested in Jay Cutler

      The Chicago Sun Times is reporting that the Bears are interested in quarterback Jay Cutler, who the Broncos are willing to trade before this month’s draft.

      Jay CutlerYahoo! Sports reported last week that the Bears called the Broncos expressing interest in Cutler should Denver decide to deal him. They have been reported as one of at least 10 teams to do so, and one league source said the number is higher than that.

      The timing makes sense. The Broncos want ample opportunity to create a frenzied market and ensure they receive a king’s ransom for Cutler, who turns 26 this month. They also need time to prepare for the draft, and they’ll likely be looking for a package of multiple draft picks and possibly multiple players.

      If the Bears are serious, they might have to part with two first-round picks and a player or additional picks. It likely will require creativity. Other teams that have been linked to Cutler include Tampa Bay — which would have gotten him in the proposed three-way trade with New England — Detroit, Minnesota, San Francisco, Cleveland, Jacksonville, Carolina and the New York Jets. Washington also can’t be ruled out.

      Two first round picks is a steep price to pay, but you figure Bears’ GM Jerry Angelo is going to botch those selections anyway so they might as well get a young quarterback out of the deal. (I’m kidding! I’m kidding! Okay, no I’m not…)

      As the article points out, the Broncos have done a nice job of creating a market for Cutler with so many teams reportedly being interested in the young QB. And why wouldn’t a team like the Bears be interested? Cutler is young and experienced, has a strong arm and the Bears haven’t had a reliable quarterback since Jim McMahon. But if they do wind up pulling off a trade for Cutler, the Bears better get the kid some receivers.

      Report: Calipari heading to Kentucky

      According to “a source very close to the situation,” Memphis head coach John Calipari is going to be the next coach at Kentucky.

      News Channel 3 has learned from a source very close to the situation that U of M coach John Calipari is leaving to be the new coach at the University of Kentucky.

      Right now, Calipari is at his home meeting with members of his staff explaining the decision.

      We have live crews stationed in the area as well as working with our sister station in Lexington, KY.

      How will he fare?

      John Calipari considers Kentucky job

      Memphis head coach John Calipari is reportedly considering bolting for Kentucky.

      Coach John Calipari is spending Monday meeting with Memphis officials and contemplating what is expected to be a multiyear, multimillion-dollar offer to coach Kentucky, a source close to the situation said.

      Calipari had a morning meeting with his players Monday to discuss his interest in the Kentucky opening, and players left convinced their coach would leave their program for Kentucky’s, the Memphis Commercial Appeal reported, citing a source close to the situation.

      Calipari met with Kentucky officials on Sunday at an undisclosed location, at which time he was given an outline on the length of a deal and contract dollars to succeed Billy Gillispie, the source said.

      But more than the money, Calipari has to decide if he wants to leave a program in Memphis that he has transformed into a national championship contender for one of the most tradition-rich programs in the sport that has recently fallen upon hard times.

      Calipari’s top recruit, DeMarcus Cousins, has made an oral commitment to Memphis, but because national letters of intent do not have to be signed until next month, Cousins could easily follow Calipari to Kentucky if he were to become the Wildcats’ coach.

      Memphis is also a top destination for point guard John Wall, so he might follow Calipari to Kentucky as well if the coach decides to take the job. He has had great success at mid-major schools like UMass and Memphis, but can he have the same success one of the country’s proudest basketball programs? He’s a terrific recruiter and a good defensive coach, so I think he’d get Kentucky back into the top 10 in two or three years, tops.

      Seth Curry to transfer to Duke

      The one good thing about exiting the NCAA tournament early is that you can get a jump start on your recruiting. Mike Krzyzewski didn’t waste any time landing one of the most promising transfer prospects, Seth Curry.

      After spending several hours Sunday with Krzyzewski on the Duke campus, Curry — the nation’s leading freshman scorer (20.3 points per game) this season at Liberty University — committed to play for the Blue Devils.

      Under NCAA rules, Curry will not be allowed to participate next season but can begin play in the 2010-11 season.

      “After spending five hours with coach K and his staff and hearing how highly they regard (Seth) and how they think he can help their program, it speaks for itself,” father Dell Curry said Sunday evening.

      “It seems like the right fit. Seth committed before he left.”

      Jon Scheyer will be back next year, but Gerald Henderson may not. Either way, Seth Curry will be able to fill one of the guard positions after he sits out a year. He and Elliot Williams would make a nice combination barring the arrival of a big-time recruit (John Wall?) that decides to stay more than a single season.
