      Robaire Smith latest Brown to get caught with loaded gun at airport

      Note to self: Never go to the airport with a defensive linemen from the Cleveland Browns, because chances are they’ll get caught with a loaded gun in their carry-on bag.

      From the Cleveland Plain Dealer:

      Browns defensive Robaire Smith, who was with fellow defensive lineman Shaun Rogers when he was arrested for having a loaded gun in his carry-on at the airport, is now facing charges for the same thing, the Flint Journal reported today.

      But if you’re wondering why Smith didn’t learn from Rogers’ mistake, Smith’s incident happened first.

      Smith, 32, was going through security at Bishop Airport in Flint, Mich. on Nov. 6 when a loaded gun was found in his carry-on. Rogers was arrested April 1st after a loaded gun was found in his bag at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. He pleaded not guilty and is awaiting a court date.

      Like Rogers, Smith told airport security he forgot the gun was in his bag. The gun was confiscated and he was released pending further investigation. Leyton issued the charge on Thursday, misdemeanor possession of a firearm in a sterile area of a commercial airport. It carries a maximum sentence of one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

      This is outstanding. You wouldn’t even see this kind of story play out in a movie because people would think it’s too ridiculous and unrealistic. Yet this is all true! All of it!

      I would have loved to have seen Smith’s face when Rogers was busted with his gun:

      “Wait…you too?! Dude, the same thing happened to me like five months ago! Yeah, no, I’m totally serious – same exact thing.”

      I’ll pose the same question here as I did when Rogers was arrested: How could anyone forget that they have a loaded freaking weapon on them in an airport? I freak out when I think my toothpaste tube is too big and I have to carry it on a plane, yet these guys completely forget that they’re packing heat. Un-real.

      Kirk Morrison chats with The Scores Report

      Since linebacker Kirk Morrison entered the league as a third-round pick of the Oakland Raiders in 2005, he’s never recorded fewer than 116 tackles. Last year, he finished the 2009 season tied for sixth in the NFL with 133 take downs, all while forcing three fumbles and recording two sacks despite playing most of the year with a dislocated elbow.

      In April, the Raiders selected Alabama linebacker Rolando McClain with the eighth overall pick and Morrison knew his future in Oakland had come to an end. Shortly after McClain’s name was announced, Morrison was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a fifth round pick.

      The trade offered a new beginning for Morrison, who in five seasons with the Raiders had never came close to playing in the postseason. While speaking to us from his new digs in Jacksonville, Morrison expressed his excitement about his new surroundings, teammates and head coach Jack Del Rio. He also gave us insight on how to defend guys like Peyton Manning and Chris Johnson (two of his new divisional opponents) and what players and teams he enjoys watching when he’s not playing.

      Chris Simms arrested for driving under the influence of Mary Jane

      The New York Post is reporting that Titans’ quarterback Chris Simms was arrested Thursday morning for driving while under the influence of marijuana. Apparently he was driving with his 8-months pregnant wife in the passenger seat.

      Simms and his wife Danielle, both 29 of Nashville, were stopped as Simms drove their 2009 Mercedes Benz through an NYPD Manhattan South Task Force checkpoint on W. Houston Street at about 1:35 a.m., according to a source.

      Simms reeked of marijuana and admitted to officers he had smoked earlier in the car, a source said.

      “He was muttering,” a source told The Post.

      He also had red eyes, flushed face and slurred speech, sources added.

      No drugs were found on Simms or in the car, and his wife, Danielle, was allowed to take the car home.

      Simms was arrested and spent this morning getting booked.

      He is currently awaiting arraignment at Manhattan Criminal Court on charges of operating a motor vehicle while impaired by marijuana.

      The misdemeanor charge carries a maximum fine of $1,000 and up to one year in jail.

      Hey, why not take a marijuana-induced joyride with your pregnant wife when your NFL career is hanging on by a thread? Makes perfect sense.

      The Titans are having one hell of an offseason. Chris Johnson is pissed about his contract, Vince Young is punching people in strip clubs and now the highly valuable Chris Simms is getting pulled over for what can only be described as being a f**king moron.

      Police change their tune, not ready to rule Vick out as a person of interest in shooting

      Michael Vick isn’t out of the woods yet. He was a person of “no interest” to police in the shooting of Quanis Phillips, but video surveillance taken the night of the incident has put his involvement in question.

      Vick told police that he was “long gone” by the time the shooting took place outside a club in which he was celebrating his 30th birthday late last week. But video shows him leaving the club just three minutes before the shooting took place, which casts some doubt in what the quarterback said in interviews with authorities.

      Now police don’t know what to call Vick, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. They’re not ready to deem him a suspect or even an accomplice to the shooting, but as they’re gathering more facts, they’re changing their tune in terms of whether or not he’s a person of interest.

      “Right now, we don’t really have a title for him,” police spokesman Adam Bernstein told the Daily News yesterday.

      “We didn’t know anything” when they were asked Friday morning about their interest in Vick’s involvement in the shooting, Bernstein said.

      “Since then, we have viewed this video. And more people have come forward, giving information,” Bernstein said.

      The Daily News is also reporting that Vick’s federal probation officer in Norfolk is also investigating the incident as well to see if the quarterback was in violation of his probation. So even if Vick isn’t charged by the police for having a connection in the shooting, it doesn’t mean that he will escape all punishment.

      And wouldn’t that be something. It’s been roughly a year since he was released from prison and he’s already in hot water again with the law.

      NFL suspends Jackson for three games

      ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the NFL has suspended Chargers’ restricted free agent Vincent Jackson for three games this season. The suspension stems from the receiver’s two DUIs, although it can also be appealed.

      Earlier this week I discussed possible trade partners for Jackson if the Chargers eventually decide to deal him. He has already stated his intentions to hold out if GM A.J. Smith doesn’t abide by his wishes for a new contract, or trades him to a team that will invest in him long-term.

      Interestingly, Schefter also reports that even if Jackson follows through with his holdout threats, the suspension will still start in Week 1 no matter what. If that’s the case (there’s no reason to doubt Schefter), then it gives V-Jax all the more reason to follow through with his holdout, seeing as how he won’t be playing the first couple of weeks anyway. He could ultimately holdout through training camp on the first couple of weeks to see if the Chargers offer him a long-term deal and then make his decision before Week 4.

      That said, no matter what Jackson does, Smith isn’t going to give in. He’s a hard-nosed executive that doesn’t bow to plays threats or demands. If he wants Jackson to play on a one-year tender, then that’s probably the receiver’s best and only option. We’ll just have to wait and see if either side gives in, although my money is on Smith standing firm.
