What can we expect from Bruce Gradkowski?

In case you missed it, the Raiders have benched Jason Campbell in favor of Bruce Gradkowski, who entered the Rams game at halftime and led Oakland to a much needed win. He threw for 162 yards with one TD and one interception in two quarters of play.

In his last four starts of the 2009 season, he averaged 211 yards, 1.5 TDs and 0.3 INT against Cincinnati, at Dallas, at Pittsburgh and at home against the Redskins. Those four teams ranked 6th, 20th, 16th and 8th against the pass, respectively, so it wasn’t an easy schedule to throw against. He also added an average of 19 rushing yards, so he has the ability to take off with the ball when necessary.

Gradkowski has the Cardinals this week, and if you’re in a pinch, or if you need a second QB for your two-QB league, you could do worse. His schedule — HOU, SD, @ SF, @ DEN, SEA and KC — is pretty favorable over the next seven weeks. Given the way Campbell was playing, I suspect the insertion of Gradkowski is an upgrade for the entire passing game, but most importantly for Louis Murphy and Zach Miller, who were floundering with Campbell under center. Murphy caught five of his six passes after halftime last week, while Miller was targeted three times by Gradkowski over the same span, catching one pass for 24-yards.

It’s important to temper expectations anytime the Raiders are involved because the franchise is so dysfunctional. When was the last time Oakland had a consistent fantasy stud? Just when you start to count on them, they find a way to screw up whatever good mojo they had going. Is that still the case?

I guess we’ll find out over the next month or so, but for now I’m reasonably optimistic that Gradkowski will be a capable QB2 in the short term.

Love ‘Em & Leave ‘Em: Week 3

Every week, I will highlight a few players to start and a few players to sit at each position. I’m a firm believer in starting your studs, so I won’t suggest you bench Drew Brees or Adrian Peterson because they have tough matchups – just go ahead and keep them in your lineup. Instead, I’ll focus on the borderline guys – players you’ll only start under the right circumstances. It’s important to note that depending on your roster and situation, you may not be able to follow these recommendations. For example, if I suggest you bench a solid starter like Tony Romo, only do so if you have a clearly better option on your bench.

Mike Vick has another favorable matchup this week against the Jags, who rank 29th in the league against the pass…Carson Palmer has numerous weapons to throw to, and he’ll have a chance to utilize all of them this week against the Panthers, who have yielded 218 yards and 2.5 TDs per game through the first two weeks…Brett Favre hasn’t looked very good this season, and he may be without Percy Harvin, who is battling a hip injury and migraines. But he faces the Lions (305 yards, 2.0 TD per game), so if he can’t post good numbers this week, things are very bad in Minnesota…Need a deep sleeper? Ryan Fitzpatrick takes over as the Bills starter, and he’ll likely have to throw a ton too keep up with the Pats, who have showed quite a bit of vulnerability against the pass…I think David Garrard will have a bounce-back game against the Eagles (at home, where he plays well). Philly figures to score well, so Garrard will have to pass to keep up.

Phil Simms returns to chat with The Scores Report

Feb 3, 2010; For Lauderdale, FL, USA; Phil Simms emcees the FedEx Ground & Air NFL Players of the Year press conference at the Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center.

Obviously we’re doing something right here at The Scores Report if a Super Bowl MVP quarterback is willing to chat with us two years in a row.

Over the past four years, Giants’ legend Phil Simms has worked with FedEX to promote their “Air & Ground NFL Players of the Week.”

What is it? Every week during the NFL season six finalists are chosen for the FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Week award. Three are nominated as the FedEx air player (so quarterbacks, obviously) and three are nominated as the FedEx ground player (so punters, obviously) online at NFL.com. At the end of the season, fans nominate three finalists for each category and then two players (one air and one ground) are chosen as the FedEx Air & Ground Players of the Year. Last season, two worthy receipts in Drew Brees and Chris Johnson won the awards.

Why is it important? The winners of the awards will each receive a $2,000 donation in their name to a local Safe Kids coalition in the player’s areas. Over the years, FedEx has donated over $13 million to this program, which educates people on pedestrian safety – especially around schools and playgrounds.

Over the past two years, we’ve been fortunate enough to chat with Phil about his involvement in the program and what it means to him. He’s also been gracious enough to talk football with us and this year we got to pick his brain about whether or not Mark Sanchez is the Jets’ Achilles heel, what quarterback (Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers) he would select if he were starting a franchise tomorrow, and what his take is on the Brandon Jacobs situation in New York.

The video interview is below and to check out our first interview with Phil last year, click here.

2010 NFL Week 3 Odds

Along with the point spreads and over/under totals for each game this Sunday, here are a couple of odds that stand out to me for Week 3 in the NFL.

49ers –3 at Chiefs, 1:00PM ET
Why are the 49ers favored in this game? I realize that the public isn’t totally convinced that the Chiefs are a contender, but they’re the 2-0 team here – not the Niners. The line should probably be KC –1 or even –2, but San Francisco being favored makes me wonder what the lines makers are up to. That said, despite the records the 49ers are still the better team and I believe this is the week the Chiefs come back down to earth. Even though they picked up a road win last Sunday, they barely squeaked by the Browns and now they have a desperate San Francisco team coming in this week. Turnovers killed the Niners on Monday night or else they probably beat the Saints behind Alex Smith’s solid play.
THE LEAN: 49ERS –3

Falcons +4 at Saints, 1:00PM ET
I’ve had this game circled on my calenderer for months for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, Falcons-Saints games are always highly entertaining and when two playoff contenders get to lock horns it usually makes for good football. But one other reason is because Atlanta matches up well with New Orleans. The Falcons can run the ball and if there were a weakness on the Saints’ defense to attack, it would be their interior. The Falcons dominated the line of scrimmage last week in a blowout over the Cardinals and if they can do that again this week, then they’ll keep Drew Brees on the sidelines and New Orleans’ offense off the field. Atlanta’s defense has also played well two weeks in a row now and New Orleans just lost one of their explosive offensive playmakers in Reggie Bush (leg). This is a field goal game either way, which is why I like the Falcons getting the points.
THE LEAN: FALCONS +4

Cowboys +2.5 at Texans, 1:00PM ET
I believe. I believe that the Texans are legitimate playoff contenders this year and I believe that the Cowboys aren’t as bad as they’ve looked the past two weeks. Houston is coming off two emotional wins, one against their biggest rivals in the Colts, and the other in a dramatic come-from-behind-win over the Redskins last Sunday. They’re due for a letdown and with a desperate Dallas team coming to town, this could be the weekend they suffer their first loss. DeMarcus Ware could have a field day now that starting left tackle Duane Brown (suspended) is out for the Texans.
THE LEAN: COWBOYS +2.5

Raiders +4.5 at Cardinals, 4:00PM ET
Even though they’re playing the Raiders, the Cardinals shouldn’t be favored by 4.5 points over anybody right now. They have massive issues at quarterback and in their defensive front seven, and are coming off an embarrassing loss to the Falcons in Week 2. Bruce Gradkowski has proven to be a bit of a sparkplug for the Raiders’ offense and while the team’s offensive line is still a mess, Darren McFadden might be in store for another big day if Arizona’s run defense plays as poorly as it did last Sunday in Atlanta.
THE LEAN: RAIDERS +4.5

Josh Cribbs chats with The Scores Report

CLEVELAND - DECEMBER 30: Josh Cribbs #16 of the Cleveland Browns positions himself at the line of scrimmage during the game against the San Francisco 49ers on December 30, 2007 at Cleveland Browns Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio. (Photo By Gregory Shamus/Getty Images)

The first word that comes to mind when you think about Josh Cribbs’ game is “versatile.”

While at Kent State, he set school records for total offense (10,839 yards), rushing touchdowns (38), pass completions (616), pass attempts (1,123), passing yardage (7,169), touchdowns scored (41) and points scored (246) – all records that still stand today.

Now a member of the Cleveland Browns, Cribbs continues to flash the versatility that made him a star at Kent. Arguably the Browns’ most explosive playmaker, Josh is a threat to take it to the house every time he gets his hands on the ball as either a returner, a receiver or a runner out of the Wildcat formation.

Oh, and the guy can given drop back as a quarterback and even spent some time in training camp at safety. You just don’t find players as versatile as Cribbs, who the Browns are lucky to employ (which is why they locked him up to a long-term deal this past March).

We were fortunate enough to catch Josh in between games and got to ask him what the secret is to being an elite kick returner. He also filled us in on two Browns to keep an eye on this year (fans will be extremely happy to hear what he said about one young player in particular), what his role will be in Cleveland’s offense over the course of the season and how he did in his acting debut for a September 30th episode of FX’s “The League,” in which he plays himself.

Enjoy the interview and for more on Josh, be sure to check out his Twitter Page.

The Scores Report: Hey Josh, how are you?

Josh Cribbs: Good, how you doing?
