Bill Simmons’ sports rules

In his latest column, The Sports Guy goes over some New Rules for Sports (a la Bill Maher).

New Rule: Playground rules for the NBA All-Star Game. Ever since the idea of having captains pick sides started to circulate, in February, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. Let’s say Stern names Kobe and LeBron as captains. Right before the game we have a coin flip, and the winner gets first pick. The All-Stars line up, and Kobe and LeBron pick their teams playground-style. Imagine the drama. Who’d get picked first? Would a snubbed player end up wreaking havoc in the game? Would bad blood carry over to the rest of the season? God forbid something fun happened on All-Star Weekend.

He also discusses Ryder Cup high fives, baseball managers in uniform, Scott Boras’ evil ways, the NHL in warm weather cities and Tony Kornheiser’s curious MNF apology.

Gilbert Arenas out until December

The Washington Wizards’ Gilbert Arenas recently had a procedure to clean up his knee and will be out of action until December.

Gilbert Arenas confirmed that he underwent a surgical procedure this morning that “cleaned out some debris” in his left knee. Arenas, who has undergone two surgeries to repair the left knee in the last two seasons, has been limited during the rehab process all summer and said he has planned all along on not participating in training camp or the preseason.

Arenas, who signed a six-year, $111 million contract this summer, said he plans on returning to game action sometime in early December which would mean that he’d miss at least the season’s first month.

“I just had some floating debris in there that was slowing me down,” said Arenas, who seemed to be in good spirits. “It was irritating the knee so we decided to go in there and clean it out. This should actually allow me to come back faster.”

Clearly, this is a blow to the Wizards, who signed Arenas to that monster contract thinking he’d be ready to go at the start of the season. The bottom half of the Eastern Conference playoff race is usually pretty tight, and Washington will be behind the eight ball from the start.

The 10 Worst Musical Performances by Athletes

REALCLEARSPORTS.com ranked the 10 worst musical performances by athletes.

#9: Chicago Bears – Super Bowl Shuffle
The Super Bowl Shuffle was shot the day after the Bears lost their only game of the 1985 season, to the Miami Dolphins. The single actually reached #41 on the Billboard charts and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rhythm & Blues Vocal Performance—Duo or Group. It was pretty bold for a team to produce a song about going to the Super Bowl, but the Bears came through, destroying the Patriots 46-10.

#1: Carl Lewis – National Anthem
You’ve seen it before. But it doesn’t make it any less painful.

I know some Bear fans that have just officially boycotted REALCLEARSPORTS.com for dogging the Super Bowl Shuffle. You just don’t touch the “SBS” when it comes to Bear fans…

Delonte West signs with Cavs

The trade for Mo Williams might have meant the end for Delonte West’s tenure in Cleveland. On Friday, the Cavs made sure that didn’t happen.

Guard Delonte West signed a multiyear deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday, ending concerns the restricted free agent would hold out at training camp.

General Manager Danny Ferry didn’t disclose terms of the deal Friday.

The 25-year-old West will compete for time with Mo Williams, the former Milwaukee guard who was Cleveland’s major offseason acquisition, and Daniel Gibson, another Cleveland restricted free agent who signed back with the team.

I think the idea is for Williams, West and Gibson to play in a three-guard rotation in Cleveland’s backcourt. All three players are capable of playing both point and off guard, so they could make for a potent rotation.

It’s interesting that the Cavs elected not to disclose the terms of the deal. I think there should be a rule that teams have to report the length and value of the contract when they announce the signing.

15 Hottest Female Sportscasters

SPIKE.com did something somebody should have done a long time ago: Have people vote on the 15 hottest female sportscasters.

Erin AndrewsErin Andrews
The former Gator’s Dazzler dancer works for ESPN where she started as a reporter for the network’s National Hockey League coverage. She has since added college football, college basketball, college baseball and Major League baseball. In 2007 readers of Playboy magazine voted her “America’s Sexiest sportscaster”.

Leanne Tweeden
Leanne Tweeden is part Spanish, Filipino and Norwegian and got her break as a model after being discovered whilst working at Hooters. From 2000 – 2007 she was a correspondent on Fox’s Best Damn Sports Show Period. This year she is the host of NBC’s Poker After Dark. Also this year, as a part of Hooters 25 anniversary, she was named “The Top Hooters Girls of all time”.

Lisa Guerrero
Lisa Guerrero started her career as a cheerleader for the Los Angeles Rams, dabbled as a soap actress then moved into sports reporting. The Los Angeles Times named her “the hardest working sports reporter”. She’s best known as the co-host The Best Damn Sports Show Period, which she left in 2003. She’s now a correspondent on Inside Edition. In 2006 at age 41 she posed for Playboy.

I know a lot of people would vote for Andrews, but there’s just something about Leanne Leeann Tweeden that I can’t put my finger on. (Maybe it’s because she’s hot? I don’t know, I’ll have to do some more research…)
