Concerns about Vince Young

Phil Savage, the excellent GM of the Cleveland Browns, can speak candidly about Vince Young since the Browns are not in the market for a quarterback in the first round. Savage sums up nicely the concerns about Young’s ability to transition from the college game to the NFL game:

Savage raised some serious questions about Young’s ability to transfer his running and throwing ability to the NFL.

“I think the question on him, at least in my mind, is the fact he has operated in a shotgun offense with pretty vanilla reads, and if those reads weren’t there, he could take off and run with it,” he said. “You could do that in the NFL to a degree, but there does seem to be a little bit more structure in the league than in the college game.

“I think you would have to adjust your system, and if he came on your team you’d have to have two different offenses in a way, and I’m not sure you have time to prepare all of that. You have to be really convinced that’s what you want to do.”

He’s right on the money.

T. O. will sign with the Cowboys

Let the soap opera begin. I’m not looking forward to all the “in-depth” coverage of this situation we’ll have to endure over the next year.

That said, Parcells might be the only coach who can handle this clown (others, like Belichick, wouldn’t bother trying). If Ron Artest can string together half a season in Sacramento without disrupting that team, perhaps T. O. can learn to keep his mouth shut as well and focus on football.

Browns make splash with early free-agency moves

The Cleveland Browns have the cap room, and GM Phil Savage is wasting no time spending it. The Browns got off to a great start by signing one of the big prizes in this free agent class, two-time Pro Bowler LeCharles Bentley. Bentley can play center or guard, and as a Cleveland native and former Ohio State Buckeye, he’s thrilled to be playing for the Browns.

Savage also signed left tackle Kevin Shaffer who helped Atlanta generate one of the most potent running games in the NFL.

Finally, the Browns added some veteran leadership to the WR corps by adding another Cleveland native, Joe Jurevicious.
