2009 College Football Week 7 Odds & Preview

Here are previews of some of the big games in Week 7 in college football, as well as the point spread odds for all the top 25 games.

Wednesday, October 14
No. 5 Boise State at Tulsa, 8:00PM ET
Pundits will use this game as a test to see where the Broncos are. The Oregon team that Boise beat in the opening week of the season isn’t the same one that has terrorized opponents of late. Therefore, some are questioning the legitimacy of the Broncos’ ranking with wins over Miami of Ohio, Fresno State, Bowling Green and UC Davis. A convincing win over 4-1 Tulsa should help subdue the criticisms.

Thursday, October 15
No. 8 Cincinnati at No. 21 South Florida, 7:30PM ET
The Bearcats lead the nation in sacks and tackles for loss, while also ranking third in scoring offense. But they’ve been met with plenty of skepticism about whether or not they’re really a top 10 team. The Bulls’ offensive line has been fantastic so far this season and if they can protect quarterback B.J. Daniels, then USF has a great shot at pulling off the upset and shooting up the rankings.

Saturday, October 17
Arkansas at No. 1 Florida, 3:30PM ET
The Razorbacks certainly turned some heads last week in their rout over Auburn, but they’ll face a different challenge altogether this Saturday in the Swamp. Florida has the best defense in the nation, led by an outstanding front four that manhandled LSU last week. It’ll be interesting to see how Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett copes with the immense pressure he’ll face this Saturday, although if the Razorbacks don’t turn the ball over they could have a shot to keep things close considering Florida lacks explosion offensively.

No. 22 South Carolina at No. 2 Alabama, 7:45PM ET
The Crimson Tide have one of the most complete teams in college football, although the offense settled for too many field goals last week against Ole Miss. Greg McElroy and company will get a stiff test against a South Carolina defense that might keep things close this Saturday. That said, nobody should be surprised if ‘Bama produces another blow out win considering the Gamecocks struggled last week with a below average Kentucky team.

No. 20 Oklahoma at No. 3 Texas, 12:00PM ET
The Sooners are too good to be ranked No. 20, especially now that Sam Bradford is back. Bradford didn’t look sharp last week in a win over Baylor, which was his first game back since suffering a shoulder injury in Week 1. But his receivers didn’t do him any favors with the amount of drops they had. OU will face a Texas team that will attack the middle of the field with Colt McCoy and the passing game, as well as try and generate a fierce pass rush against Bradford. The Longhorns are playing incredibly well defensively and could give the OU quarterback fits.

No. Virginia Tech at No. 19 Georgia Tech, 6:00PM ET
VA Tech’s offense is clicking on all cylinders right now and nobody outside of Alabama is playing better football than the Hokies. The VA Tech defense will get a unique challenge this week from a Yellow Jackets’ offense that is seemingly unstoppable at the moment. A win over the Hokies and nobody will be questioning the legitimacy of Georgia Tech. But if they get stomped, then it’ll be hard for the Jackets to move up in the rankings the rest of the season.

No. 6 USC at No. 25 Notre Dame, 3:30PM ET
USC still lacks that explosive firepower on offense, which is a bit concerning because Notre Dame has proven that it can score at will. What happens if this game turns into a shootout? Can Matt Barkley and company keep up? On the flip side, the Trojans’ defense has been outstanding and have held opponents to only nine points the past two games. It will be highly entertaining watching Jimmy Clausen and ND’s high-powered offense take on USC’s stingy defense. If this game is close in the end, Charlie Weis’ team has proven countless times this season that it can mount a fourth quarter comeback.

Shockey looking for revenge this weekend

Saints tight end Jeremy Shockey still has a bitter taste in his mouth from his days as a Giant, writes the New York Daily News. The Saints will host the Giants this Sunday at the Superdome.

Shockey gets his shot at revenge when the undefeated Saints and Giants meet Sunday in the Superdome. The defense should expect plenty of yapping from him. The Giants were thrilled to dump Shockey, who had become a divisive malcontent, and Saints coach Sean Payton, his offensive coordinator with the Giants in his rookie year, was glad to hand over second- and fifth-round picks right before training camp in 2008.

Shockey had been one of the faces of the franchise. But whether it was a bruised ego when the Giants won the Super Bowl without him or a feeling he was disrespected by management or money, it was clear his act had grown stale in New York and he forced his way out of town.

Shockey told the New Orleans Times-Picayune in yesterday’s editions that he had a “bitter taste in my mouth,” from his Giants days. “It’s just something that if you cross me once – it’s hard enough to gain my trust as it is – and if you lie to me and if you say something behind closed doors between that person and myself …

“I needed change in my life,” he said.

He had a blowup with GM Jerry Reese during a minicamp in June of ’08 and that made it impossible for him to return. He is happy and healthy in New Orleans after he was injured for much of last season, playing in 11 games and catching 50 passes with no TDs. In the Saints’ 4-0 start, he leads the Saints with 18 catches and also has two touchdowns. He is the third receiving option for Drew Brees after Marques Colston and Reggie Bush.

One of the things that always stood out to me about the Giants’ Super Bowl run a couple years ago was that Manning had so much success in the playoffs without having Shockey at his disposal. That was just one example of why individual players – no matter how talented they may be – will never be more important than the team.

Shockey has little right to be bitter with the Giants and he should just be happy with his new surroundings. Payton loves him in New Orleans, which is a perfect fit for his skill set. He should use his motivation in helping his team win this Sunday and not let his anger cloud his focus.

Will the Browns trade Quinn before the deadline?

There is growing speculation out of Cleveland that the Browns will deal quarterback Brady Quinn before the October 20 trade deadline. Quinn won the Browns’ starting quarterback job in preseason but struggled mightily once the regular season started and was replaced by Derek Anderson.

Considering the Browns traded Kellen Winslow to the Buccaneers this offseason and Braylon Edwards to the Jets last week, it’s clear that the team has no reservations about dealing former first round picks. So the rumor of Quinn being shipped out of town certainly holds water.

Despite his brutal 2-for-17 passing performance against the Bills last Sunday, Anderson has shown that he can move the offense better than Quinn can. Anderson is turnover prone, but he has the strong arm that head coach Eric Mangini covets. Quinn, on the other hand, displayed poor pocket awareness and the inability to hit receivers in stride during the first few weeks of the season.

But while a trade makes sense for the Browns (Mangini reportedly favors former Jet Brett Ratliff as his backup, making Quinn even more expendable), they just don’t happen that often midseason. I realize Cleveland just dealt Edwards to New York last week, but his recent off-field incident and growing tension with management expedited that process.

FOX pokes fun at Jessica Simpson’s weight during pregame show

Somebody has to get fired for this right?

Whether you think it’s funny or not, this crossed the line and I’m shocked FOX actually aired it. If they wanted to poke fun at the Cowboys, they didn’t have to drag Jessica Simpson’s weight into it.

That said, the bit about Phillips is freaking hilarious. They should have stuck with that and left Simpson’s weight out of it.

Skins’ Rogers calls out Snyder

While reflecting on his team’s struggles this season, Redskins cornerback Carlos Rogers was quick to note that Daniel Snyder doesn’t escape blame.

From NBC Sports.com:

“We’ve got a lot of things we need to iron out, a lot of problems,” cornerback Carlos Rogers said. “It’s from personnel to coaches to whatever it is, there’s a lot of things we need to iron out, and until we address those issues and turn it around, we’re going to be the same, going up and down. It not only starts with the players, coaches; it starts with the ownership. They bring everybody in and they’ve got last say-so of everything, so that’s where it starts, I guess.”

It’s unusual for a player to implicate owner Dan Snyder and executive vice president for football operations Vinny Cerrato along with everyone else. After painting that picture, Rogers was asked what could be done in the short team to address the team’s needs.

“You can’t do too much right now,” Rogers said. “You just have to go with what you’ve got and make the best for it, and that’s what we’re doing. They’re making changes where they feel they need to make changes. Other than that, players are going to have to step up, coaches are going to have to step up, and we’ve just got to find a way — that’s the bottom line — we’ve got to find a way to turn it around and deal with what we’ve got.”

The Redskins will have a hard time winning with Snyder in control. He signs free agents at will with no regard for team chemistry and then wonders why his jambalaya never pans out. What’s interesting is that now his players are starting to realize his methods don’t work.

Barring a dramatic turnaround, Jim Zorn will be fired at the end of the season. But for real change to occur, Snyder is going to have to allow his general manager and scouting staff to find players and not meddle in their game plan by carelessly throwing money at top dollar free agents. If he can’t trust his staff to put together successful roster, then the Redskins are doomed because he certainly doesn’t have what it takes to build a winner with his current strategy.
