Feijao vs. Henderson medical suspensions issued for Strikeforce

According to HeavyMMA.com, Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante and seven other competitors for “Strikeforce: Feijao vs. Henderson” have been issued medical suspensions.

Former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante and seven other fighters have been suspended following last Saturday’s “Strikeforce: Feijao vs. Henderson.”

The Ohio State Athletic Commission released the list to MMAWeekly.com earlier today.

Cavalcante, who lost his 205 lb. strap to Dan Henderson in the main event of the evening, has been issued a 60 day suspension following the knockout loss, while fellow main card fighters Jorge Masvidal and Billy Evangelista received indefinite suspensions.

Also being put on the shelf to heal up, Jason Riley and Ian Rammel were given indefinite suspensions, and JP Felty matched “Feijao” with a 60 day suspension of his own. Lastly, Billy Vaughn and Mitch Whitesel were handed suspensions of 30 and 90 days, respectively.

“Strikeforce: Feijao vs. Henderson” took place at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio this past Saturday. The card broadcast live on Showtime in the 10 p.m. ET slot.

Strikeforce Houston: 10 Things Learned

E. Spencer Kyte breaks down 10 things that HeavyMMA.com learned from Strikeforce Houston.

Down with the King
Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante ended “King Mo” Lawal’s reign, delivering on the promise that was seemingly washed away when he failed to prepare and lost to Mike Kyle last year.

Always viewed as a dangerous striker, “Feijao” backed up the description, catching Lawal with power early in the third round. He credited the loss to Kyle with helping him refocuses and take his preparation more seriously, and it showed, as he handed the previously unbeaten champion the first loss of his career.

Increased Possibilities
The changing of the guard at the top of the 205-pound division will actually allow Strikeforce greater movement in matchmaking. Unlike Lawal who had expressed no interest in fighting friend and occasional training partner Renato “Babalu” Sobral, “Feijao” has no such allegiances.

As much as Mike Kyle wouldn’t be a title contender anywhere else, he holds a win over the new champ and a rematch is an easy pairing. Others like Dan Henderson and Gegard Mousasi could be considered as well.
Lawal is still a charismatic option on any future event, and being bumped back in the pecking order makes it easier to utilize him against the middle tier talent the division holds. While no one will probably officially agree, this result works out well for the San Jose-based outfit.

Strikeforce: Heavy Artillery Picks & Predictions

Strikeforce: Heavy Artillery takes place tonight at 10PM ET on Showtime with some interesting fights. The promotion is looking to erase the memory of the live brawl on CBS during its last show and to do so, they need some solid fights out of their heavyweights tonight. Here is my take on the bouts and who I think will win.

Strikeforce Heavyweight Championship – Alistair Overeem (32-11) vs. Brett Rogers (10-1) – Overeem hasn’t fought for Strikeforce since 2007, yet somehow is still their heavyweight champion. Despite the long layoff from the promotion, he has fought overseas a number of times, with his last seven fights ending in the first round and all six wins ending in less than two minutes. Rogers is coming off his first MMA loss, to Fedor Emelianenko last November. The key for him in this fight will be what did he learn from that loss. Overeem likes to attack and end the fight early, as does Rogers, but Overeem has the experience to know not to put himself in a bad position. I think experience pays off in this fight as Overeem is able to defeat Rogers by TKO late in the first.

Heavyweight Bout – Andrei Arlovski (15-7) vs. Antonio Silva (13-2) – Arlovski has fallen on hard times, getting quickly knocked out by Rogers and Fedor in his last two fights. This will be his first bout in nearly a year and he understands the importance of a win, as he has switched up camps and went to Jackson’s MMA and American Kickboxing Academy for training. Silva is a good fighter, but he hasn’t beaten anyone of note in his career. He could land a big punch on Arlovski’s weak chin, but look for the Bela-Russian to work combos and leg kicks to eventually earn a TKO in round three.
