2011 NFL Week 2 Point Spreads & Preview

Eagles (1-0) @ Falcons (0-1), 8:20PM ET
Outside of Chargers-Patriots or maybe Bears-Saints, there isn’t a juicer matchup on the schedule this week. The Falcons should be embarrassed by the way they performed last week in Chicago but they have zero time to wallow in self pity because Michael Vick and the Eagles come storming into the Georgia Dome this weekend. Andy Reid has had major ownage on the Falcons over the years, as Philly is 9-2-1 against the spread in its last 12 games against Atlanta, which includes a 4-1-1 ATS mark on the road. With defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux set to miss over a month with a knee injury, the Falcons’ defense is in major trouble. An 0-2 start for the defending NFC South champions is a big-time reality.
THE ODDS: EAGLES –1.5

Chargers (1-0) @ Patriots (1-0), 4:15PM ET
Two teams picked by many to win their respective divisions will square off in New England on Sunday when the Pats host the Chargers at 4:15PM ET. These two teams met in San Diego last October and despite dominating the first half, the Bolts fell to the Pats, 23-20. The underdog is 6-2 against the spread in the last eight meetings between these two teams, while the under is 4-1 in the last five meetings. That said, the over is 4-1 in the last five meetings in New England and after watching Tom Brady dissect the Dolphins on Monday night, it’s hard to envision a low-scoring game this Sunday at Foxboro.
THE ODDS: PATRIOTS –7

Fade Material: NFL Week 1 Predictions

Colts @ Texans, 1:00PM ET
I realize Peyton Manning isn’t playing today but everyone just expects the Colts to stay in the locker room and take a loss. Kerry Collins is nothing more than a short-term stop gap but he knows how to run an NFL offense. With Arian Foster out (which is huge for an Indy defense that has had trouble stopping the run the past 16 years), I like the Colts to keep it somewhat close. The Colts are 6-1 against the spread in their last seven games as an underd and 5-1 ATS in their last six games as a road dog.
THE PICK: COLTS +9

Titans @ Jaguars, 1:00PM ET
This games comes down to the quarterback position. Matt Hasselbeck’s better days are behind him but he’s a veteran that knows how to get the ball into the hands of his best weapons. Luke McCown, on the other hand, just found out he was starting earlier this week. The Titans are 4-0 against the spread in their last four games in Week 1 and 11-3 ATS in their lat 14 games in September.
THE PICK: TITANS +1

Eagles @ Rams, 1:00PM ET
Everyone is high on the Rams this season, and for good reason. But they’ve got a tough matchup against an Eagles team that will give Sam Bradford plenty of issues. The Rams’ secondary will also have its hands full with Michael Vick, DeSean Jackson and the fast Eagle offense. The Rams are 1-9-1 against the spread in their last 11 games in Week 1 and 15-33-3 ATS in their last 51 games in September.
THE PICK: EAGLES -3.5

Bengals @ Browns, 1:00PM ET
The Browns are on the upswing while the Bengals are seemingly headed for disaster. But this is a division rivalry and if Andy Dalton can at least resemble a NFL quarterback, the Bengals are better than people think. The underdog is 7-1 against the spread in the last eight meetings between these two teams, while the Browns are 0-4 ATS in their last four division games.
THE PICK: BENGALS +6.5

2011 NFL Week 1 Odds

Oddsmakers have released the point spreads for Week 1 in the NFL. Along with a complete list of odds, here are a couple of games that jump out at me as we head into the opening week in the NFL.

Saints @ Packers, 8:30PM ET, Thursday
The action gets kicked off this season with a matchup between the 2010 Super Bowl champion Packers and the 2009 Super Bowl champion Saints. I envision a rebound year for Drew Brees and the Saints, who added solid depth on both sides of the ball this offseason and drafted a running back in Mark Ingram that could help restore balance to Sean Payton’s offense. The Packers, meanwhile, are coming off a Super Bowl win and will have tight end Jermichael Finley and running back Ryan Grant back from injury. Aaron Rodgers is an absolute stud and should be talked about among the league’s elite. In terms of the odds, the total is set high for a reason but I see this game falling under. In four of the last five season openers the total has fallen under and even though both of these teams can both light up the scoreboard, I don’t think we’ll see either of the Saints or Packers’ best offensive efforts this Thursday. Don’t forget it was a short offseason in terms of season preparation.
ODDS: PACKERS –4 (47)

Colts @ Texans, 1:00PM ET, Sunday
Personally, I think this is the Texans’ year. They went a long way to improve their horrendous defense by hiring Wade Phillips as coordinator and signing free agent corner Jonathan Joseph. Phillips has a knack for turning teams around quickly and I don’t think Houston will be an aberration. Peyton Manning will likely miss Week 1 and that means Kerry Collins will get the nod. If Manning is healthy the Colts are liable to go 12-4 but without him, they could just as easily fall to 4-12. The Texans usually start off the season on fire before fading in the second half. Maybe this year will be different. I see them getting off to a good start and without Manning, this one could be a blowout.
ODDS: TEXANS –9 (45.5)

Vegas likes the Patriots, Packers and Eagles

Mad genius Bill Belichick is getting props for his off-season moves, and the odds-makers also like the free agent coups of the Eagles. Of course, they also respect Aaron Rodgers and the Pack, even though they’ve been quiet.

Here’s how they are ranked when you look at the NFL futures on the odds to win the Super Bowl:

New England Patriots: 6.5/1 odds

Green Bay Packers: 7/1 odds

Philadelphia Eagles: 7.5/1 odds

The Jets are at 12/1 and the Steelers are at 14/1.

Eagles (9-4) @ Giants (9-4), 1:00PM ET
This game right here, is what the NFL is about. While the participants in the NFC West continue to play, “Who sucks less?” a legitimate grudge match will take place at the New Meadowlands this Sunday. The Eagles seemingly hold an advantage because they weren’t the ones who had to stay in an airport for two days only to have their game moved to an entirely different city on Monday night. But that won’t be an excuse for the Giants. This is the NFC East and these are the Philadelphia Eagles – a team the Giants should be more than familiar with by now. It’s gut-check time for Eli Manning, who leads the league in interceptions with 19. With how good the Giants’ defense and running game has been of late, there are excuses for Eli starting this weekend. He must play better. On the other side, what is Andy Reid doing to ensure that Michael Vick doesn’t take a pounding courtesy of the Giants’ nasty front seven? You know they’ll be coming after him. Buckle your chinstraps – we’ve got a war in the NFC East this Sunday.
CURRENT ODDS: GIANTS –2.5

Jaguars (8-5) @ Colts (7-6), 1:00PM ET
It doesn’t get any easier for the Colts: If they lose this Sunday, they’re out of the playoffs. If they win their remaining three games, they’re in. See? Easy. The Jaguars currently own a one-game lead over the Colts in the AFC South and have already beaten Indy once this season (a wild 31-28 nail biter in Week 4). A win this weekend would mean an unexpected AFC South crown but that won’t be easy. Peyton Manning threw for over 300 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions last week in a win over the Titans. Prior to that game, he had thrown 11 interceptions in a three-game span but by the looks of things last week, he’s starting to figure things out. With the Jaguars’ currently sitting at 28th in the league in passing yards allowed (258.3), you know Manning will go after the Jacksonville secondary early and often. On the other side, can the Colts’ soft defense slow Maurice Jones-Drew?
CURRENT ODDS: COLTS –4.5

Saints (10-3) @ Ravens (9-4), 1:00PM ET
John Harbaugh can’t feel too great about the way the Ravens’ won in Houston on Monday night. His team had a 28-7 lead early in the third quarter and then went into a coma before waking up in overtime. With Drew Brees and a red-hot Saints team coming to town, now isn’t the time for the vaunted Baltimore defense to be giving up scoring drives of 90-plus yards. If Harbaugh can’t figure out where the leaks are coming from, Brees and Sean Payton will pick them apart. The Ravens can ill-afford to suffer another loss in a tight AFC playoff race and if they have any hope of winning the AFC North, then they can’t lose this weekend. The Steelers will likely get a free win against the hapless Jets and Pittsburgh owns a one-game lead and the tiebreaker based on winning percentage in the division. Time to see what Harbaugh’s squad is made of.
CURRENT ODDS: RAVENS –1

Packers (8-5) @ Patriots (11-2), 8:20PM ET
The Packers dug themselves a hole by losing to the Lions last weekend in Detroit and could be without Aaron Rodgers (concussion) this Sunday night in New England. Matt Flynn can’t beat the Patriots on his own and Tom Brady and Co. look like an unstoppable force. The odds are definitely stacked against Green Bay, which is why they need to hope the Bears lose to the Vikings on Monday night. Even if Chicago wins though, the Packers’ playoff hopes would still be alive (however slim). If the Lions can beat the Bucs (one of the teams the Packers are battling with for a Wild Card spot) earlier in the day, maybe it’ll inspire Flynn to turn in the performance of a lifetime. That seems highly unlikely at this point but hey, crazier things have happened.
