      Tony Dungy visits Michael Vick in prison

      Former NFL head coach Tony Dungy visited Michael Vick at a federal prison in Leavenworth, Kansas recently and according to Vick’s agent Joel Segal, the meeting was “private” and “positive”.

      Vick met with Dungy to discuss his life after he gets out of prison. He is scheduled to leave Leavenworth May 20 and serve the remainder of his sentence under home confinement at his five-bedroom home in Hampton, Va., with his fiancée and two of his children.

      “I am going out there to really talk about life. To talk about the Lord,” Dungy said on the show. “I know he has made a profession that he has accepted the Lord into his life. Talk to him about what he’s going to face. Most people are going to be against him. He’s got to understand that.”

      Considering all the work Dungy does with his youth boys programs, I would imagine the conversation with Vick was very positive. But everything is in Vick’s hands now. Dungy can’t be with him every second of every day to ensure he’s staying out of trouble and making something of his life. It’s up to Vick to show remorse for what he has done and to move forward with his life in a positive manner. Returning to the NFL should be the last thing on Vick’s mind right now and here’s hoping he continues to seek Dungy’s guidance from here on out.

      Michael Vick the Buccaneer?

      Michael VickPeter King of SI.com speculates that once the Falcons release Michael Vick, two landing spots for the suspended quarterback could be Oakland and Tampa Bay.

      8. I think I’m dying to know who’s going to try to sign Mike Vick when the Falcons release him. Two teams come to mind: Oakland and Tampa Bay. The Bucs are longshots, but I don’t think new GM Mark Dominick is afraid of him.

      The Raiders are an easy choice, but I think King is on the right track in tossing out teams that nobody expects to take on a shot on Vick. Tampa is a long shot, but they have a new GM and head coach and could be looking for a quarterback. The Jets are another team that comes to mind that needs a quarterback and has a strong presence at head coach now in Rex Ryan that could handle Vick. (Although the New York media would absolutely hammer Vick on a daily basis.)

      I don’t think you could count out a team like Washington taking a shot on Vick either with Daniel Snyder at the helm. Snyder doesn’t seem entirely sold on Jason Campbell (him trying to trade Campbell last week is evidence of that) and he’s never shy about the flashy signing. Is Vick a good fit for the West Coast Offense? No. But neither is Byron Leftwich and Snyder is pursing him.

      Falcons, Vick reach a settlement on contract grievance

      The Falcons and suspended quarterback Michael Vick have reached a settlement regarding a grievance that the team filed against him for a breach of contract.

      Under the settlement, Vick has agreed to pay the Falcons $7.5 million if the team wins an appeal in the Eighth Circuit Court and $6.5 million if the court upholds U.S. District Judge David Doty’s decision that Vick is only liable for $3.75 million.

      The settlement should pave the way for Vick’s imminent release from the team. He has remained under contract with the team while serving a 21-month prison term for his 2007 conviction for bankrolling a dogfighting operation.

      In the settlement reached last week, sources say that Vick agreed to let the appeals court make a ruling but would only pay a maximum of $7.5 million and a minimum of $6.5 million. The appeals court is expected to rule no later than June.

      While it’ll be nice for the Falcons to get some money back from Vick, from a fan’s perspective the question becomes, does the team get any cap relief in this settlement? Atlanta catches a break in terms of the salary cap with Vick being suspended and he’ll never see the money owed to him in 2010 through 2012 because the Falcons will eventually release him, but what about 2009? If commissioner Roger Goodell doesn’t suspend him again once he’s out of prison, then Vick is owed $9 million in 2009, plus another $6.43 million in roster bonuses. Can the Falcons apply the $7.5 million they will/could get in the contract settlement towards that lofty cap number in 2009? Or do they still have to eat his salary because they’re releasing him? Is there life on other planets? What’s the meaning of life? Did a comet really kill all the dinosaurs or was it all just a part of evolution?

      Vick accused of illegally withdrawing $1.3 mil from pension plan

      Michael Vick is in more hot water as the Department of Labor is accusing him of illegally withdrawing more than $1.3 million from a pension plan he had to help play his criminal restitution after his conviction on dog-fighting charges.

      Michael VickThe department says Vick made a series of prohibited transfers from a pension plan sponsored by MV7, a celebrity marketing company owned by the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback. The department alleges that Vick violated his duties as trustee of a pension plan that covered nine current or former MV7 employees.

      “This action sends a message that the Labor Department will not tolerate the misuse of plan money and will take whatever steps necessary to recover the assets owed to eligible workers,” Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis said in a prepared statement.

      The department also accused two of Vick’s former financial advisers, Mary R. Wong and David A. Talbot, of participating in some of the transfers.

      The filing further complicates Vick’s bankruptcy case, which has gradually moved along in Newport News while Vick serves a 23-month prison term in the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kan. The judge presiding over the bankruptcy case has ordered Vick to testify in person at next week’s hearing on confirmation of his Chapter 11 plan.

      The department says the plan assets were partially used to help pay the criminal restitution imposed on Vick after his federal dogfighting conspiracy conviction.

      I’ve never seen anyone blow through millions of dollars like this a-hole and have nothing to show for it.

      Singletary not ruling out Vick joining 49ers

      Even though he’d like to evaluate Alex Smith more, 49ers’ head coach Mike Singletary isn’t ruling out the possibility of Michael Vick playing in San Francisco some day.

      Mike Singletary“I’m not going to say I’m open or closed,” Singletary said of the possibility of the 49ers acquiring Vick.

      “I’d say it has to be something Scot (McCloughan) and I talk about and feel good about one way or the other. But we have not talked about it at this point in great detail. We’re trying to focus on what we have.

      “I think right now we really need to look at the two guys we have,” Singletary added. “If everything works out with Alex and he’s back, we need to look at that and go as far as we can go with that. The whole Michael Vick thing, we have to sit down and talk about that. But for right now, we have enough on our plates.”

      When asked about the team’s possibly going after Vick, team president Jed York said, “That’s up to Scot and Mike.”

      He added that the possibility is probably remote.

      “We’d talk about it,” York said. “If they felt it was right for the team, and convince me and my parents . . . it’s up to them to show that somebody who’s had issues in the past can be a part of this team. But that’s not something we’ve discussed, and I doubt that would happen.”

      Vick could learn a lot about discipline from Singletary and maybe under the head coach’s guidance, could start to turn his life around. This is still a big “if”, but if Vick winds up in San Francisco, it’d be nice to know he’d have Singletary serving as a mentor.
