Joe Torre to Manny Ramirez: Lose the dreadlocks

Since he was traded from the Boston Red Sox to the Dodgers at the July 31st MLB trade deadline, L.A. manager Joe Torre has asked outfielder Manny Ramirez to cut his dreadlocks.

Manny said yes, but he apparently is taking his sweet ass time and now people are starting to wonder if Ramirez is testing the manager’s authority.

“I’m not negotiating anything,” Torre said, not laughing, when the conversation was recounted to him a few minutes later in the Dodgers’ dugout. “He’ll do it. He told me he’ll do it. When he first got here, I asked him, ‘How important is the hair to you?’ And he asked me, ‘Do you want me to cut it?’ So I said, ‘I want you to clean it up a little.”‘

“We’re going to talk again later,” Torre said yesterday. And yet the manager was adamant when asked if maybe Ramirez was using his distinctive hairdo — which last night was adorned with a single green, yellow and red Rastafarian dread right in the middle — to test the new manager’s authority by continuing to stonewall the request.

“No, he isn’t,” Torre said. “He is not. I didn’t tell him he had to do it by a certain date. He acknowledged he’s gonna do something and I believe he will do it.” …
Torre acknowledges he has no idea what that something might be. “What am I going to do, tell him if you don’t do this, Santa Claus isn’t coming? Try to make that one stick.”

Manny does what he wants – plain and simple. If he wants to drag this thing out until September, he will. For the record, I don’t think Ramirez is destructive, he’s just goofy and likes to play head games. He’ll probably wind up cutting his hair, but he’ll figure out a way to do it on his terms – not Joe Torre’s.

Manny Ramirez wants to be a Yankee

According to the New York Post via a close friend of Manny Ramirez, the former Red Sox outfielder wants to be a Yankee next year.

According to people who have spoken to the eccentric outfielder since he was dealt to L.A. on July 31, Ramirez wants to sign a free-agent deal with the Yankees this offseason and get 19 chances a year to punish Boston.

“He wants to play for the Yankees so he can get at the Red Sox,” a close friend of Ramirez’s told The Post.

Of course, every free agent says he wants to play for the Yankees. They pay well, will always have a chance to make the postseason, and when they show an interest in a free agent, the price from other clubs skyrockets.

Considering Ramirez is represented by Scott Boras, every imaginable angle will be played when the 36-year-old, a product of George Washington High School in Washington Heights, will become a free agent following the World Series.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman would not comment on the situation. Ramirez forced the Red Sox to deal him to the Dodgers by badmouthing the organization, not hustling and sitting out a July 25 game against the Yankees with a knee injury that didn’t show up on an MRI the next day.

Well that’s a big middle finger to the Red Sox now isn’t it? How about the Dodgers, too? Hey thanks for trading for me L.A., but there’s no chance in hell I’m going to re-sign with you because I want to piss off my former team.

Obvious statement of the century: Manny is a nut, regardless of if this report is true or not.

Red Sox trade Manny Ramirez to Dodgers

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the Boston Red Sox officially unloaded outfielder Manny Ramirez to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Pittsburgh’s Jason Bay will head to Boston, while the Pirates will get four minor league prospects in return.

The Red Sox traded Manny Ramirez to the Dodgers late Thursday afternoon, SI.com has learned.
Jason Bay is headed to Boston as part of the deal, SI.com has learned. The Pirates will get four minor leaguers in the three-way trade.

The Red Sox went back-and-forth with the Marlins and Dodgers as the 4 p.m. ET deadline approached. Ramirez said earlier today, as first reported by SI.com, that he would accept a trade to any team.
The announcement will be made in conjunction with a World Baseball Classic announcement at Dodger Stadium shortly.

Interesting. This is a pretty sweet deal for the Dodgers because they get the power-hitting Ramirez and didn’t have to give up Matt Kemp or Andre Ethier (two of their top young talents), as previously rumored. They probably had to part with some of their top minor league talent, but the Dodgers might have just leapfrogged Arizona in the NL West and certainly have enough talent to take on whichever teams emerge from the National League.

As for the Sox, they get a productive outfielder in Bay and get rid of a headache in Ramirez. Bay doesn’t have the pop Manny does, but he’s a solid player and he’s under contract until 2009.

Manny Ramirez on his way to Florida?

Jon Heyman of SI.com is reporting that a three-team blockbuster trade might be brewing involving Boston Red Sox outfielder Manny Ramirez. The rumored deal would send Ramirez to Florida.

There’s still work to be done in the Red Sox-Marlins part of the megadeal, but one swap that’s on the table would send young outfielder Jeremy Hermida, power-hitting outfield prospect Mike Stanton and hard-throwing young pitcher Ryan Tucker from Florida to Boston for Ramirez. However, the Marlins are said to be trying to keep the highly-regarded Stanton out of the trade. Josh Willingham was discussed as a replacement for Hermida, but it appears Hermida would be the main player going in the first part of a potential deal.

In the most talked-about three-team scenario, Boston would send one or more of those players acquired from Florida to Pittsburgh for star outfielder Jason Bay, who would be a more palatable replacement for Ramirez than either Hermida or Willingham. Other combinations being discussed are believed include reliever John Grabow or perhaps even shortstop Jack Wilson. But Pittsburgh is said to be still trying to enhance its end of things, and Boston could wind up tying to substitute a different third team other than Pittsburgh.

It’s interesting to see the Marlins mixing it up as buyers. Normally at this time of year, they’re selling whatever pieces they have to acquire prospects for down the road. But given that they’re only 1.5 games back in the NL East, it’s nice to see them go for it and try to swing deals to win in the now.

Could you imagine what Manny would do against NL pitching? Scary thought.

Report: Dodgers, Red Sox talking Manny Ramirez trade

The New York Post is reporting that the Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox are talking about a trade that would send Manny Ramirez and cash to L.A. in exchange for either Matt Kemp or Andre Ethier. The Post also believes that if Boston unloads Ramirez, the club would likely make a move for Mark Teixeria of the Braves.

The Mets have continued to talk to the Red Sox without much possibility of finding a deal for Ramirez. The main track now involves the Dodgers. An executive who has spoken with officials from an involved team said it is his understanding that Boston would eat most, if not all, of the roughly $7 million left on Ramirez’s 2008 contract and in exchange would receive a top youngster such as Matt Kemp or Andre Ethier.

The Red Sox would then have another deal in place to obtain Teixeira, who like Ramirez is a Scott Boras client who can be a free agent at the end of the season. The Red Sox would view the overall switch-hitting offense/Gold Glove defense package of Teixeira combined with the removal of the Manny being Manny soap opera as a plus for this season. In addition, they would get an insider two-month look at Teixeira to determine if they want to make a strong, long-term bid on him or simply offset what they give up now to get him by getting two draft picks when he signs elsewhere this winter.

While it seems foolish that the Red Sox would trade one of the best players and eat most of his salary, landing Kemp would be huge. He’s 13 years younger than Manny, hits for average and can run exceptionally well for a guy that is 6-2 and 230 pounds. Kemp might not develop into the power hitter Ramirez is, but he’s an exceptional player and surely the Sox are hoping to land him over Ethier.
