Lakers sign Kobe to three-year extension

Per NBA.com…

“Two of our main goals heading into this season were to sign Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol to contract extensions,” continued [Lakers GM Mitch] Kupchak. “With the signing of Pau earlier this season and the signing of Kobe today, we were able to accomplish those goals, helping to keep the core of this team intact for the foreseeable future and in turn help to ensure the franchise’s continued success over the years to come.”

No salary information is available, but I’m sure he’s going to make the maximum.

Bruce Willis with an odd interview at the Hornets/Lakers game [video]

Bruce Willis looked like he was having “nice…very nice” time in New Orleans during the Hornets/Lakers game.

In his defense, most of us would be “feeling good” if we were in New Orleans for night and taking in a basketball game. The difference is that we don’t have some guy running around with a microphone and camera asking us for an interview.

The 10 highest-paid sports teams in the world

Yahoo! Sports has the list, which averages the salaries for a starting player.

It’s interesting to see six NBA teams on the list, but it makes sense. Since only five players can play at a time in basketball, franchises can spend more money on their starters. NBA rosters are quite a bit smaller than baseball, football or even soccer rosters.

That makes the Yankees’ top-ranking that much more amazing.

Did the Lakers make a mistake signing Artest instead of Ariza?

Even Ron Artest himself says (via Bill Plaschke of the Los Angeles Times) that Ariza was a better fit…and a better player.

“He’s a better player than me,” Artest said Tuesday.

But Ron-Ron, nobody ever said he was better, we just said he was a better fit.

“He’s a better player,” Artest repeated emphatically. “He’s won a ring, I haven’t. I can’t even compare to him. He’s a better player.”

Artest also agrees, incidentally, with the part about Ariza being a better fit.

“He probably is,” Artest said. “He’s a role player, a great role player. I haven’t been a role player. Many times I’ve had to carry the load, this is a different look for me.”

I don’t know about you, but I sense a little sarcasm there. Later, Artest talked about how “unbelievable” his defense has been:

Flowchart of what goes through Kobe Bryant’s head during a game

Funny? Yes. Fair? Probably not. Kobe averages 5.0 assists per game (#23 in the league), so while he does shoot the ball a lot, he creates for teammates as well. In fact, Jason Richardson, Kevin Martin, Michael Redd, Vince Carter and Ben Gordon are all shooting guards that have a higher shot-to-assist ratio. (Though Jamal Crawford and Ray Allen do not, and that has to be a little scary for Kobe.)
