How did the Spurs beat the Rockets last night?

I know the answer is “defense,” but the San Antonio Spurs started with this lineup last night – George Hill, Roger Mason, Ime Udoka, Tim Duncan and Fabricio Oberto – and they still managed to beat (77-75) a Houston team that was pretty much at full strength. Rafer Alston was suspended for the game and the team is still without Shane Battier due to a foot injury. Still, the Rockets have no business losing to the Spurs, who are without Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili.

On the night, Tracy McGrady was just 2-12 from the field, but the Rockets still led by seven heading into the fourth quarter. Tim Duncan (22 points, 5 rebounds) was big down the stretch and he had the game-saving block (on Aaron Brooks’ layup attempt) to seal the win.

When looking at a win like this, maybe the injuries to Ginobili and Parker are a blessing in disguise for the Spurs. Guys like Hill and Mason are getting big minutes, and this experience could very well help San Antonio down the road.

Couch Potato Alert: NBA Thursday

With 11 games slated for tonight, there’s bound to be a few good matchups to keep your eye on. Unfortunately, the two most compelling games aren’t on national television.

Hawks @ Celtics, 7:30 PM ET
The 6-0 Hawks test their mettle against the 7-1 Celtics in this battle for supremacy in the East. The Hawks are without Josh Smith, and they’re coming off a game last night against the Bulls, so the C’s are the clear favorite in this one. Still, it’ll be interesting to see if Atlanta can keep this one close after not playing very well in Boston in last year’s playoffs.

Lakers @ Hornets, 8:00 PM ET
Some think this game might be a preview of the Western Conference Finals, but the Hornets are off to kind of a shaky start and would like to straighten things out against a Laker team that is coming off a big win in Dallas last night.

Rockets @ Suns, 10:30 PM ET (ESPN)
Is it just me, or are the Rockets much more interesting to watch now that Ron Artest is on the roster? Phoenix is 6-2 and Houston is 4-3, but both teams, barring injury, should make the playoffs this season. This one will feature a nice matchup between two of the best centers in the game (Yao Ming and Shaquille O’Neal).

With 11 games on the docket, it’s a good night to have NBA League Pass. Just keep your eye on the scoreboard and flip from exciting finish to exciting finish.

Yao miserable in Rockets’ loss to Celtics

Check out this line from Yao Ming from last night’s 103-99 loss to Boston: 4-14 from the field, eight points, seven rebounds, zero blocks and zero assists.

Ron Artest shot 3-16 from the field, but finished with 15 points since he got to the line nine times. (Yao didn’t attempt a free throw.) So between the two of them, they shot 7-30 from the field. Ouch. Is Boston’s defense that good or did these two guys just have a bad night?

It’s probably a little bit of both.

Still, the Rockets have to be somewhat encouraged that they lost to the defending champs by only four points even though two of their three best players shot a combined 23% from the floor. Houston looks like a legitimate contender in the West, though their fortunes depend so much on the sustained health of Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming.

Celtics @ Rockets, 8:30 ET

There’s a nice early-season matchup between the 2-1 Boston Celtics and the 3-0 Houston Rockets tonight on NBA TV. So far, the addition of Ron Artest has been a good one as the Rockets have won their first three games by an average of 11 points. Wins over the Grizzlies and Thunder aren’t exactly impressive, however, so a win tonight against the defending champs would give the Rockets some more credibility.
