Ravens to revisit trade for Marshall?

A Yahoo Sports report suggests that the Ravens may revisit the idea of trading for Broncos’ disgruntled wide receiver Brandon Marshall.
This comes after the Ravens were unsuccessful in getting veteran Drew Bennett(notes) to return. Bennett passed a physical last week, but then complained about an old knee injury before deciding to not play.
Bennett’s decision and Mason’s retirement earlier this month have left the Ravens in a lurch at wide receiver. The Ravens think Mason’s retirement was partly a ploy to help get more money from the team. (Mason had asked to renegotiate his deal earlier in the offseason.)
The Ravens have declined to comment. However, team history would indicate they aren’t likely to make the deal. General manager Ozzie Newsome doesn’t like to give up high draft picks, could be concerned about Marshall’s history of off-field problems and likely wouldn’t want to pay the large contract Marshall is seeking.
I have a hard time envisioning Newsome pulling the trigger on a trade for Marshall, but considering how thin the Ravens are at receiver I certainly wouldn’t rule the idea out.
Even after losing defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, productive linebacker Bart Scott and safety Jim Leonhard to the Jets this offseason, Baltimore still has the makings of one of the better defenses in the league. They also have a solid running game and assuming he doesn’t fall victim to the dreaded sophomore slump, Joe Flacco should only improve in his second year as well.
So with all of that in mind, Newsome may feel as though his team is only one missing piece away from making another run at the Super Bowl. Receiver is the obvious need and Marshall is a dynamic playmaker. But whether or not he’s worth the risk of acquiring (especially in exchange for high round draft picks) is a decision I don’t envy Newsome for having to make.
Jets cut Coles, Rams part with Drew Bennett, Trent Green

National cut day in the NFL continues. The Jets released Laveranues Coles, while the Rams cut quarterback Trent Green and Drew Bennett.
The Jets released veteran wide receiver Laveranues Coles this afternoon — but both sides left open the possibility of his return to the team.
Coles, who was scheduled to earn a guaranteed $6 million salary for the 2009-10 season, wanted a long-term deal with the team. But when the two sides could not reach an agreement, they reached a compromise, giving Coles the right to find his own deal on the open market on the eve of free agency.
Considering the market for wide receivers, which is pretty much T.J. Houshmandzadeh at this point, Coles could still get a decent contract from another team. If he doesn’t get the long-term deal he covets, a reunion with the Jets seems more than likely.
The Rams will have a new backup quarterback in 2009. The team released Trent Green, who was one year into his second tour of duty with the team on Wednesday in a move that saves the team $1.3 million of salary cap space.
The departure of Green, a two-time Pro Bowler who was with the Rams previously in 1999 and 2000, means the Rams will have a new No. 2 quarterback in 2009. One possibility is Tampa Bay free agent Jeff Garcia, who played for Rams offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur in Philadelphia in 2006.
The team also released wide receiver Drew Bennett, who had been a major disappointment since signing a $30 million free-agent contract two years ago. Bennett’s relieve is a wash, saving the team only $50,000 in cap space.
The Rams didn’t save much cap space by cutting Bennett, but there was no reason to hang onto him either. He was a gigantic bust since he arrived in St. Louis and could wind up back with Tennessee under coordinator Mike Heimerdinger.
Seahawks lose Burleson for year, Rams’ Bennett out six weeks

According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Seahawks wide receiver Nate Burleson tore a knee ligament in his knee and will miss the rest of the season.
The Seahawks got a double dose of bad news Monday, as wide receiver Nate Burleson was lost of the season after tearing the ACL in his left knee and running back Maurice Morris is out indefinitely with a sprained ligament in his right knee.
Coach Mike Holmgren made the announcements at his weekly news conference.
In other wide receiver-injury news, Drew Bennett of the St. Louis Rams is expected to miss at least six weeks after fracturing his foot Sunday at Philadelphia.
“I don’t think it’s season-ending thing,’’ Linehan said. “It looks like something that will heal in the next six weeks or so. At this point in the season, we will see, but right now it is going to keep him out at least a month or so.’’
Linehan said Bennett’s injury won’t require surgery.
Bennett’s spot in the Rams’ starting lineup will be filled by either rookie Keenan Burton, Dane Looker or a yet unnamed veteran player.
The Seahawks’ offense is a mess. The run game is a major issue and now Courtney Taylor (who struggled against Buffalo) is the No. 1 receiver. Matt Hasselbeck is in trouble unless somebody can step up and take some of the pressure off him.
