Browns’ Stallworth hits and kills pedestrian in Florida

Cleveland Browns’ wide receiver Donte Stallworth hit and killed a pedestrian with his Bentley on Saturday morning in Miami while driving to the beach.

Donte StallworthStallworth was headed toward the beach when he hit Mario Reyes, 59, around 7 a.m., said Miami Beach police spokesman Juan Sanchez. Reyes was taken to a nearby trauma center, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later. He was near a crosswalk but it’s not clear if he was crossing legally.

Stallworth, 28, was cooperating and no charges have been filed, Sanchez said. Officers drew blood to test for drugs or alcohol, which is routine. Sanchez said results from the test could take anywhere from three days to three weeks.

Police would not say where Stallworth was coming from or where he was headed, and Sanchez didn’t have anymore information about Reyes.

Miami-Dade County property records show Stallworth owns two condos in a building on Biscayne Boulevard in Miami not far from the causeway and another condo in a different building in Miami.

Stallworth will be prosecuted regardless, but a DUI charge would obviously come with serious consequences.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the victim’s family.

Update: Stallworth will eventually be charged, but for what is still undetermined at this point.

NFL News & Notes: Willis McGahee to play, not start

Willis McGaheeThe Baltimore Sun is reporting that Ravens running back Willis McGahee will play in Week 3 against the Cleveland Browns, but won’t start or be the feature back. The Ravens will likely go with a running back-by-committee approach with McGahee and rookie Ray Rice sharing carries.

Rotoworld (via Chargers’ beat writer Kevin Acee on NFL Network) is reporting that Darren Sproles is likely to see more carries than LaDainian Tomlinson, who is batting a toe/foot injury. LT didn’t run last week against the Broncos, so it’s probably a wise move to limit his workload.

– The Cleveland Browns’ official website notes that receivers Braylon Edwards (shoulder) and Donte’ Stallworth (quads) are both listed as questionable this weekend against Baltimore. That certainly doesn’t bode well for a Browns’ offense that has struggled mightily in the team’s two losses this season.

– The Green Bay Packers official website is reporting that RB Ryan Grant has been upgraded to probable for the team’s Sunday night matchup with the Cowboys. Grant didn’t fare too well against a brutal Detroit front seven last week and he’ll need to step up to help take the pressure off of QB Aaron Rodgers.

NFL News and Notes Week 2: LaDainian Tomlinson misses practice

LaDainian Tomlinson– According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, LaDainian Tomlinson, Antonio Gates and Antonio Cromartie all missed practice Wednesday. All three are expected to play Sunday.

– The Colts cut DT Ed Johnson following a marijuana arrest. Johnson made the team last year as an undrafted free agent and played in all 16 games.

– Browns’ receiver Donte Stallworth didn’t practice Wednesday and might miss his second straight game due to a quadriceps injury.

– The Jets extended the contract of tight end Chris Baker. He received a three-year extension, which includes $12.2 million in “new money.”

– Texans’ running back Ahman Green is in a walking boot, which means rookie Steve Slaton will likely start this week against Baltimore.

– More bad news for the Patriots as receiver Randy Moss is dealing with a back injury and Tom Brady’s ACL surgery has been delayed 4-6 weeks.

– The Bucs will start Brian Griese at quarterback Sunday against the Falcons. Jeff Garcia is out with an ankle injury.
