      Stoops, Arizona look for big-time program win

      Under the direction of Mike Stoops, Arizona has won some very big games. The Wildcats knocked off a top 10 team three years in a row from 2005-07, with UCLA, California and Oregon all being their victims. This past year, Arizona even knocked off the Pac 10’s Goliath in USC.

      But those wins all came late in the season, when Arizona had already piled up a handful of losses. One thing the Wildcats — who seem to perennially be thought of as a sleeper team — have not done, is capitalize on any preseason hype with a big-time early-season win.

      They have the chance to do that tonight, though, when they play host to No. 9 Iowa. A win moves the Wildcats to 3-0 and gives them some serious national respect. It would also be a huge victory for the Pac 10, which is trying to assert itself as a top conference, even with a lethargic, and penalized, USC.

      SEC suspends officials from Florida-Arkansas game

      The SEC has suspended the officials that made some horrendous calls that favored Florida in their victory over Arkansas last Saturday.

      From SI.com:

      Referee Marc Curles’ crew called a personal foul on Arkansas defensive lineman Malcolm Sheppard in the fourth quarter as the Gators were rallying for a 23-20 victory. The league said there was no video evidence to support the call.

      The same group of officials called the LSU-Georgia game earlier this month, which included a late unsportsmanlike conduct penalty the league said shouldn’t have been called.

      “A series of calls that have occurred during the last several weeks have not been to the standard that we expect from our officiating crews,” SEC commissioner Mike Slive said Wednesday. “I believe our officiating program is the best in the country. However, there are times when these actions must be taken.”

      SEC associate commissioner Charles Bloom said this is the first time the league has publicly suspended a football crew like this.
      Good for the SEC. Those were brutal calls that affected the outcome of the game. The penalties gave the Gators excellent field position and the momentum needed for them to score and steal a win from the Razorbacks.

      Granted, this won’t give Arkansas the win and Florida the loss, but hopefully the sack-less BCS voters are paying attention. The Gators should probably have one loss right now, making Alabama the undisputed No. 1 team in the nation.

      Arkansas ends Tulsa’s reign of terror

      Tulsa-ArkansasHeading into Week 10, Tulsa was 8-0 and were averaging over 55 points a game. But as Arkansas proved on Saturday, even a sub .500 SEC team is usually better than any Conference USA program that the Golden Hurricane’s will face in a given week.

      The Razorbacks rode a Dennis Johnson 96-yard kickoff return with 22 seconds left in the third quarter to beat Tulsa 30-23. The loss is the Golden Hurricane’s first of the year and will likely drop them out of the top 25 depending on how the rest of Week 10’s action pans out.

      It’s kind of interesting to see how the different conferences shake out when they go head to head. Because it’s not like this is a very good Arkansas program this year. Bobby Petrino will need at least another season to get his personal in place before they start competing again in the SEC, but it’s rather impressive how they held such an explosive Tulsa offense to only 23 points.

      Is it a difference in conference strength or were the Razorbacks just a better team today? It’s an interesting debate.

      Auburn offense a disaster again, Petrino wonders if there’s an opening

      Tommy TubervilleJust three days after firing offensive coordinator Tony Franklin due to their inept offense, Auburn managed just 193 yards of total offense in a 25-22 loss to Arkansas on Saturday. The Tigers had just 137 passing yards and 56 rushing, while also turning the ball over three times and finished just 4 for 15 on third downs.

      After firing Franklin, Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville said that his team’s offensive philosophy wasn’t going to change because it “is a good offense”, the players like it and that they are “getting better at it.”

      Here’s a thought: If you don’t have the personal to run the spread offense, don’t run it. You don’t just fire a guy and think that all of a sudden your players are going to magically fit into the system. Maybe Franklin wasn’t the problem after all. Or maybe he was. But you can’t fit square pegs into round holes.

      On a related note, isn’t it about time for Bobby Petrino to bolt Arkansas? My God, it’s been six games. Considering Petrino used to be the former offensive coordinator at Auburn, maybe he can leave Arkansas, become the new OC for the Tigers and eventually weasel his way into AU’s head coaching spot when Tuberville is eventually shown the door. That seems like the Bobby Petrino path to success.

      It wasn’t pretty, but Florida should enjoy the win

      After crushing Arkansas 38-7 in Fayetteville on Saturday, Tim Tebow and the Florida Gators officially bounced back from their upset loss to Ole’ Miss last week. But for three quarters, the Gators didn’t look that great, which allowed the Razorbacks to hang around until the fourth when UF blew it open. And as Pat Dooley of The Gainesville Sun writes, maybe Tebow and the rest of the Gators are focusing too much on how they’re winning and not winning itself.

      Florida-ArkansasThe body language Tebow was using after a huge score in a must-win game kind of summed it up for the Gator Nation, where negativity lived all week.

      Yeah, we’re winning but we should be winning by more. Did you see that pass that was picked off? What was I thinking? The penalties, man the penalties. The offense just isn’t where it should be.

      And it wasn’t for three quarters, which is why Arkansas stayed around and stayed around and Florida fans grew more and more nervous with every passing gaffe. But Arkansas isn’t as good as Ole Miss, so eventually Florida hit some big plays and blew it open.

      And isn’t that what we should all be focusing on?

      Doesn’t 38-7 on the road feel a lot better than 31-30 at home?

      So I am going to be Mr. Positive today. You win by 31 and beat the point spread and it’s a good day no matter where you live.

      Mr. Positive saw a Florida team come out here on the road on a day that started with rain and wind and chill, a day that ended in the brilliant sunshine that only a victory can bring.

      So lighten up and enjoy it. That includes you, Timmy.

      Forget everything that’s happened anyway.

      The season starts this week.

      Dooley brings up a good point. Too many times we as fans or the media get wrapped up in perfection. We know that one loss could mean that a team’s national title aspirations go up in smoke. But upsets happen, especially nowadays in college football where the talent is more spread out than ever. It’s too bad that style points mean something in college football because all Tebow and the Gators should have to worry about is winning. (Same goes for every program in the nation.)
