Chargers trade Cromartie to the Jets

The NFL free agency period is set to kickoff at midnight on Friday, but the Chargers and Jets are already making headlines by agreeing to a trade.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter via his Twitter page, the Bolts have agreed to trade cornerback Antonio Cromartie to the Jets for a conditional 2011 third round pick. The pick will turn into a second rounder depending on Cromartie’s playing time and performance.

Cromartie essentially fell out of favor in San Diego because he wasn’t a fit for the Chargers’ zone defense and also carried baggage with him off the field. But in New York, Cromartie will play in more press coverage under Rex Ryan, which will allow him to better use his ball skills He’ll see a lot of action playing opposite outstanding cover corner Darrelle Revis.

On the surface, this seems like a great fit. Ryan respects his players and commands the same in return, so if Cromartie can stay out of trouble then New York might be his home for the foreseeable future. We’ll see if the two sides eventually agree on a long-term contract, seeing as how Cromartie’s contract expires after the 2010 season.

Cromartie deal off the table between Chargers and Lions?

Lions beat writer Tom Kowalski of Mlive.com reports that a trade between Detroit and San Diego involving cornerback Antonio Cromartie is now unlikely to happen.

Yesterday, Chargers’ beat writer Kevin Acee reported that Cromartie could be traded to the Lions “soon” and that the 25-year-old cornerback had played his last down in San Diego. But as Kowalski reports, Detroit balked when the Bolts asked for Maurice Morris in return.

The Lions don’t have an abundance of depth at the running back position and Morris proved to be valuable last year when Kevin Smith tore his ACL and battled shoulder problems. Morris would be Detroit’s every down back if the season started today, so the Lions don’t want to create a bigger hole at running back, even if it would mean acquiring a young corner in the process.

So where will San Diego turn now? They probably haven’t found any shortage of teams that need a young cornerback, but the problem is that Cromartie carries plenty of baggage. His contract also expires at the end of the year, so the team acquiring him won’t be willing to give up more than a mid round draft pick in case they can’t sign Cromartie to a long-term deal.

Cromartie to be traded to Lions soon?

Chargers beat writer Kevin Acee wrote on his Twitter page that Antonio Cromartie “has almost certainly played his last game for the Chargers” and also notes that the cornerback could be traded to the Lions soon.

It’s been rumored for a little over a week now that the Bolts would want a running back in return for Cromartie, which would make the Lions an odd fit seeing as how they don’t have any outside of Kevin Smith. And Smith isn’t going anywhere, so it’ll be interesting to see what the Lions would give up in return for the 25-year-old cornerback.

Cromartie isn’t a fit for the zone scheme, which is what the Chargers used most of last year. The Lions use more press coverage under defensive coordinator Gunter Cunningham, which would allow Cromartie to use his strengths more by getting his hands on receivers early. But what the compensation would be for Cromartie is the question. He’s also only signed through 2010, so the Lions might try to work out a long-term deal before they acquire him.

Another issue that has come under question is Cromartie’s character. He’s only 25-years old, but has at least seven children with six different women in five states. He hasn’t played as well over the past couple of years for the Chargers to put up with his baggage, so the Lions (or any other team for that matter) might get the corner on the cheap.

We’ll see if this story develops.

Is LT running or being run out of San Diego?

Last week, the San Diego Chargers ended the LaDainian Tomlinson controversy by signing him to a new restructured three-year deal…or did they postpone an inevitable confrontation with their marquee star until next year.

Under the new terms of his contract, LT will receive $6.75 million as his base salary for next season, with a large roster-bonus payment being owed in March of 2010. At that time, the Chargers will have to decide if they want to pay him for another year of service.

Team President Dean Spanos played a large role in completing this contract agreement, as he couldn’t bear to see LT playing in another uniform this upcoming season. GM AJ Smith advised management that the team needed immediate salary cap relief in order to sign several key players (QB Philip Rivers, TE Antonio Gates, CB Antonio Cromartie) to future contracts, and felt they should zero in on Tomlinson’s contract.

Smith hoped to use his abrasive managerial style to negotiate a restructured deal with Tomlinson. In a newspaper article (click here to read), he mocked LT’s wishes to remain in San Diego. Spanos had to step in and remove Smith from the negotiating team in order to complete this deal. Tomlinson publicly thanked him for his role in smoothing out their relationship during the process and also for their personal friendship.

Tomlinson turns 30 this summer and is eager to prove his explosive running style has not left him just yet. Defensive coordinators from opposing teams would agree, as they still respect LT’s running ability enough to employ an eight-man front on first and second down last season. This allowed Rivers to blossom into an upper-echelon passer, as he exploited single coverage for over 4000 yards and 34 touchdowns last season. And Rivers did this without a legit # 1 receiver on the roster.

The reports of LT’s demise are a bit premature, as he has only missed one regular season game in his career. Unfortunately, Tomlinson’s last two post-seasons have been cut short due to injuries. The uncertainty of his health raised the question if he would continue his career as a Charger. But the alternative is unthinkable for Charger fans…in their minds, he belongs in San Diego forever.

NFL News: Westbrook, Warner and Ward

– Eagles’ running back Brian Westbrook underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee over a month ago according to the Philadelphia Daily News. The procedure was apparently a routine “cleanup” and already has recovered.

– The Cardinals have upped the ante in an attempt to keep quarterback Kurt Warner in Arizona. The Cards increased their contract offer from $20 million to $23 million over two years. Warner’s visit to San Fran must have spooked the ‘Zona front office.

– The Bucs signed running back Derrick Ward to a four-year, $17 million contract with $6 million in guarantees. Will this signing cost Cadillac Williams a roster spot?

– The Chargers are reportedly shopping cornerback Antonio Cromartie according to the San Diego-Tribune. The Bolts want to sign free agent Drayton Florence and already have Antoine Cason and Quentin Jammer as starters, which means there isn’t much room for Cromartie.

– The Titans upgraded their receiving corps with the addition of wideout Nate Washington, formerly of the Super Bowl champion Steelers. Washington is coming off a nice season and at 25, has a lot of football ahead of him. The Titans drastically needed to add offensive talent and this was a good start.
