Rashad Evans and Chael Sonnen were expected to win their fights at UFC on FOX 2 Saturday night, and they did just that.

Evans defeated Phil Davis by unanimous decision to become the No. 1 contender for the light heavyweight title while Sonnen defeated Michael Bisping by unanimous decision to earn a future shot at the middleweight championship.

In the main event, Evans simply out-classed Davis with his superior wrestling and striking. Davis, who was in the biggest fight in his career, seemed overwhelmed by the environment and his opponent while Evans remained calm and implemented his game plan.

Evans didn’t look overly impressive but he did enough to win and now will face Jon Jones at UFC 145 in a fight that everyone has been waiting for.

Sonnen had a much more difficult time with Bisping than what was expected. Bisping showed the ability to stay off his back, but he didn’t quite do enough in the eyes of the judges to win the striking contest.

All three rounds were razor thin and there was some debate as to who won, but ultimately the judges all scored the fight in favor of Sonnen. He will now face Anderson Silva for the second time later this year. Sonnen clearly had the best performance against Silva than anyone in the UFC, as he was an arm triangle away from pulling out a decision win over the champion.

Frankie Edgar was determined to prove he could beat Gray Maynard.

On Saturday night, despite all the signs pointing that he would be unable to do so, Edgar did just that, knocking out the challenger in the fourth round to retain his UFC Lightweight Championship in the main event of UFC 136.

After fighting to a 5-round draw back at UFC 125 last January, Saturday’s bout had almost an identical start. Maynard caught Edgar with a big uppercut in the middle of the first round and pummeled the champion to a near stoppage.

However, Edgar managed to stay conscious and mobile, and survived the round despite losing it 10-8 on most cards.

After a break between rounds, Edgar seemed to get his stamina back and began working his game. He used his quickness to out-box Maynard and avoid another big punch, while Maynard looked flat on his feet and simply looking for the one-punch victory.

Come the fourth round, Edgar landed a big cross that dropped Maynard. The challenger got to his feet but ate a series of punches that eventually left him face flat in the canvas.

The win solidifies Edgar as a true star in the sport and he can finally cross Maynard off his list of opponents.

HeavyMMA.com has released their pound for pound rankings for the month of May.

We’ve long hoped to see a fight between Anderson Silva and Georges St. Pierre. We thought it would be the ultimate super-fight, a way to truly see who the best fighter in the world is while watching both men etch their superb careers even further into the annals of history.

After UFC 129, we’re not really interested in seeing that fight any more. It doesn’t hold the same kind of intrigue, not after you’ve seen St. Pierre struggle with Jake Shields and realize that the much-larger Silva would almost certainly have his way with the current welterweight champion.

Let’s take a look at our pound-for-pound rankings after UFC 129:

1. Anderson Silva
It’s becoming obvious that we’re not going to see Silva face Georges St. Pierre, and that’s fine. We’ve gotten to the point where we’re not sure how well St. Pierre would do in a fight against the much-bigger Silva, anyway. Instead, the pound for pound king will focus his attention on Yushin Okami, who he’ll face in the main event of UFC 134 in August. Okami was the last man to beat him. Sure, it was by disqualification, but you don’t have to put that in the marketing materials.

Rankings Week over at HeavyMMA.com continues with a look at the top middleweights in the world of mixed martial arts.

The UFC’s middleweight king finally has a new opponent, and it’ll be Yushin Okami drawing the short straw to face Silva at UFC 134 in August. The rest of the division will see a sea change over the summer, as top contender Nate Marquardt vacates the division to move down to welterweight while banished superstar Chael Sonnen will return to action, likely against Michael Bisping. It’s an interesting time to be a UFC middleweight.

1. Anderson Silva
Silva’s next opponent has been named, and it’s not Georges St. Pierre. Despite Dana White’s insistence that Silva would face GSP if St. Pierre beats Shields next weekend, it appears that Yushin Okami, instead, will get the next title shot. Okami presents the same kind of challenges for Silva that training partner Chael Sonnen did — namely his wrestling. That fight headlines UFC Rio in August.

2. Chael Sonnen
Sonnen goes before the Nevada State Athletic Commission to apply for a fighter and cornerman’s license next week. If the bid is successful, Sonnen will likely coach The Ultimate Fighter 14 against Michael Bisping. If it’s not, Sonnen will still likely coach The Ultimate Fighter 14, but the UFC will have to be creative in how they handle it.

Yushin Okami, the last man to beat Anderson Silva, will finally get his shot at the title when he faces Silva again at UFC Rio according to HeavyMMA.com.

Yushin Okami was the last man to beat Anderson Silva. At “UFC Rio,” he’ll finally get his long-awaited crack at the middleweight title.

UFC President Dana White confirmed the bout with USA Today on Wednesday afternoon. The news puts an end to the idea that welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre will move up to challenge for Silva’s title.

Okami defeated Nate Marquardt in November to earn his shot at the middleweight title. He defeated Silva via disqualification back in 2006 when Silva used an illegal upkick at a Rumble on the Rock show. Silva is undefeated since that lone loss, while Okami has gone 12-3 in the same span.
