      White embarrassed by UFC 97

      Despite chants of “boring” and boos that echoed inside the Bell Centre, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight champ Anderson Silva entered the record books with a unanimous decision over Thale Leites at UFC 97:Redemption in Montreal on Saturday evening.

      Silva posted his ninth-straight victory in the octagon that broke a tie he held with MMA legend Royce Gracie and Jon Finch. This was overshadowed by the lack of action generated in a less-than-stellar main event, as the two fighters avoided contact for the first minute of the fight and they often went for long stretches without exchanging blows.

      This didn’t sit well with UFC President Dana White, and he didn’t mince words in the post-fight press conference.

      “I can honestly tell you that I’ve never put on an event that I was embarrassed to be at until tonight,” White said. “I want to publicly apologize to all the fans.

      “Watching that was hard. That was tough to take. It was embarrassing, honestly. It was really and truly embarrassing.”

      The fans booed throughout the match and started a “boring” chant at the beginning of the final round. They also cheered for UFC welterweight champion George St. Pierre, who was sitting at ringside. The Canadian star is rumored to be the next opponent for Silva.

      Here’s a weekly rundown of MMA content from Ben Goldstein of CagePotato.com:

      – The young angry lion took out the old braces-wearing lion at Strikeforce’s kickass “Shamrock vs. Diaz” event. In the aftermath, Cristiane “Cris Cyborg” Santos lost some respect and Nick Diaz thinks he’s ready to box Roy Jones Jr.

      – Junie Browning’s even dumber and drunker brother Rob left The Ultimate Fighter as quickly as he arrived. And everyone rejoiced.

      – Speaking of MMA on TV, “Bully Beatdown” may be as fake as “The Hills.”

      – Tickets to the UFC’s historic 100th show sold out in a matter of hours. Scalped tickets are going for up to $24,000. Seriously.

      – Sorry Chuck, but if your biggest problem is all the porn stars trying to party with you to advance their own careers, you don’t have that many problems.

      – Bellator Fighting Championships: The most interesting MMA league that nobody seems to care about.

      – Tune in to CagePotato.com tomorrow night starting at 10 p.m. ET for live results of UFC 97: Redemption.       Carlos ConditHere’s a weekly rundown of MMA content from Ben Goldstein of CagePotato.com:

      – Carlos Condit didn’t live up to the hype and Junie Browning didn’t live up to his mouth at Wednesday’s UFC Fight Night show. You can check out some videos from the event here.

      – Word on the street is that jiu-jitsu phenon Demian Maia will get the next crack at Anderson Silva’s UFC middleweight belt…assuming Silva crushes Thales Leites later this month at UFC 97.

      – BJ Penn will finally return to the lightweight division at UFC 101 (August 8th, Philadelphia), where he’ll take on #1 contender Kenny Florian. It will be the first time in 15 months that the UFC’s 155-pound strap will be on the line.

      – The ninth season of The Ultimate Fighter debuted Wednesday night, as 16 British hopefuls were cut down to eight official members of Team U.K. We do not have high hopes for this lot.

      – After a rage-filled video-blog entry that saw UFC prez Dana White use the word “faggot” and call a female reporter a “fuckin’ dumb bitch,” White has issued a public apology. To the gays, at least.

      Anderson “the spider” Silva started his fighting career back in 2000 in the Mecca (Vale Tudo) organization. He started off with a decision loss, but quickly went on a nine-fight win streak. Silva is one of the most feared strikers in the world, showcasing world class Muay Thai kick boxing skills, which were honed at the infamous Chute Boxe Academy in Brazil. He also happens to have a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, earning impressive victories over Travis Lutter and Dan Henderson via submissions.

      Silva started his pro MMA career in Vale tudo Brazilian fights under the Mecca organization. After several wins he moved to Shooto and then moved to Pride FC and Cage Rage. He amassed a very impressive record, which prompted the UFC to sign him to a multi fight deal. He left Cage Rage and began his destruction of the middleweight division in the UFC, leaving such fighters as Nate Marquardt, Chris Lebon, and Rich Franklin still feeling the bite of the spider.

      Now Silva has run through every UFC middleweight and is still currently the champ at 185. He has stated that he hopes to retire soon from fighting after his current UFC contract is up. He is currently ranked the number one-pound for pound fighter in the world by many MMA sites. His next title defense is set at UFC 97.

      Fighting Style: Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Freestyle

      Rich “Ace” Franklin hails from Cincinnati, Ohio where he was a math teacher before taking up MMA. He began his training in a shed with friends with the use of instructional videotapes. He would later join Jorge Gurgel – a black belt in BJJ – and trained under Neal Rowe for kickboxing. He has since earned a brown belt under Gurgel and continues to improve his wrestling and striking in Ohio.

      Franklin got his nickname from Jim Carry’s “Ace Ventura”, which Rich resembles strongly. He is good friends with Tim “the Maniac” Silvia, who was shown crying after Franklin was beaten badly in his first bought with Anderson Silva. He would get a rematch, but suffered a similar fate in the cage.

      He has fought at 205 and 185 in the UFC, appearing leaner and quicker at middleweight (185). He holds notable wins over Ken Shamrock, Evan Tanner, and a huge stunning knockout over Nate Quarry. He had run through most of the UFC’s 185lbs division until losing to Anderson Silva. Franklin had recently been on a two-fight win streak before Dan Henderson defeated him. He is set to face Wanderlei Silva at UFC 99.
