      Tommy Bowden fired as head coach of Clemson

      The University of Clemson has fired head coach Tommy Bowden.

      Assistant head coach Dabo Swinney will serve as interim coach for the remainder of the season, the news station reports.

      The Tigers opened with a 34-10 loss to Alabama and are now 3-3 (1-2 in ACC play). Bowden was firmly on the hot seat after a loss to Maryland Sept. 27, and a loss on Thursday to Wake Forest turned up the heat.

      Bowden also was questioned over benching staring quarterback Cullen Harper in favor of redshirt freshman Willy Korn.

      Bowden signed a contract extension in December that would have kept him at Clemson through 2014. It is believed that Clemson will owe Bowden $4 million after terminating that contract early, but financial details surrounding the coach’s departure were not announced.

      Bowden has a 72-45 record at Clemson with eight bowl appearances. The Tigers were No. 9 in The Associated Press preseason Top 25 poll and were expected to compete for the ACC championship, which would have been their first, in Bowden’s 10th season as coach.

      It was bound to happen. Clemson has underachieved under Bowden for years and it was only a matter of time before the program had to make a change. Bowden’s attempt to replace Harper with Korn was a last ditch effort to save his job. What Harper really needs is for his young offensive line to gel and significantly better coaching.

      Florida can thank LSU lineman for getting swagger back

      As Pete Thamel of The New York Times writes, Tim Tebow and the Florida Gators appear to have gotten their swagger back after thumping SEC rival LSU on Saturday night.

      Tim TebowThere were moments all over the field Saturday night that showed how re-energized Tebow was. He chest-bumped Mullen before the game. He knocked helmets with Percy Harvin after a 70-yard touchdown pass — a career high for both — in the game’s first minute. He led the team in celebratory helmet slaps, fiery fist pumps and any other signs of emotion.

      “That’s the difference between this year and last year,” Tebow said. “They scored and they made it within 6 points and we knew we had to put a drive together. That’s where you see a difference now, a more mature team and a more poised team.”

      Tebow is a more mature and poised player, more content to share the wealth with his teammates and not try to do everything himself. That is one reason his 10 passing touchdowns and 3 rushing touchdowns through six games are off last year’s pace.

      Even after its stunning loss to Mississippi, Florida (5-1) is in line to win the SEC East. Few things are certain in college football when it comes to the national championship game, but it is likely that whoever wins the SEC will have the best shot of any league champion to play for the title.

      Tebow and Florida can partially thank LSU defensive lineman Ricky Jean-Francois for getting their swagger back. Even in a blowout win over Arkansas two weeks ago you could tell Tebow and the Gators were still feeling the effects from their loss to Ole’ Miss. But once Jean-Francois shot his mouth off about ‘taking Tebow out,’ UF seemed to re-focus.

      Florida is still a juggernaut – I don’t care what anyone says.

      Tony Romo to miss four weeks

      Tony RomoESPN.com is reporting that Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo could miss up to four weeks because of a broken pinkie finger.

      Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has a broken pinkie on his throwing hand and will be out four weeks, a team source told ESPN’s Michael Smith.

      Romo initially was diagnosed with a pinkie sprain in Sunday’s 30-24 overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

      Veteran quarterback Brad Johnson, the Cowboys’ holder on kicks, is Romo’s backup.

      The Cowboys have lost two of their last three games after starting the season 3-0.

      For a team that just lost to the Arizona Cardinals, this is crippling for the Cowboys. Their offense is going to look quite different with “Elbow Pads” Johnson in there. That’s not to say that Johnson is going to be a complete waste (he does have plenty of weapons around him), but all of a sudden Dallas looks incredibly vulnerable.


      Ouch! The upside is that owners with Tony Romo are probably doing pretty well record-wise, so maybe they can weather the storm for four weeks. Then again, maybe not. Brad Johnson seems like the easiest move to make, though there’s no guarantee that he has enough left in the tank. He’s a vet, however, and he’s walking into an offense with a ton of weapons. Trent Edwards is out there on a few waiver wires and he has nice matchups in Week 7 and Week 9. Matt Cassel has nice matchups the next two weeks but it looked like he’d post big numbers against a shaky Chargers defense and was unable to have any success. Matt Ryan is on bye this week, but looks like a decent start the following three, while Marc Bulger has three nice matchups in the next four games (though he hasn’t shown much of anything this season).

      Peter King has amnesia about Jeff Garcia

      In his latest edition of “Monday Morning Quarterback,” Peter King of SI.com writes this about Jeff Garcia:

      5. Tampa Bay (4-2). How admirable is Jeff Garcia? He goes 15 of 20 with no picks or sacks against a formidable Panther D, and all he talks about after the game, in effect, is how he appreciates the chance to be an NFL quarterback.

      Admirable? Garcia didn’t seem to appreciate the chance to be an NFL quarterback this offseason when he demanded a new contract from the Bucs or else he’d sit out of football.

      “MMQ” is the best but King is off on this one.

      McMahon wants fake wrestling to look less fake

      Vince McMahon apparently wants wrestling to look be more real.

      Vince McMahonVince McMahon is said to want wrestling to become more real. Former WCW superstar Norman Smiley was hired as a trainer for WWE’s developmental territory Florida Championship Wrestling because of his background experience in realistic Japanese wrestling.

      Officials would like wrestlers to make their punches appear that it’s connecting to the opponent and to perform moves that are more realistic. McMahon would like the wrestlers to put their hands up in defense when receiving a punch. Management have debated for more than a year on to use a knockout finish, which was recently done with the Undertaker and Big Show match at No Mercy. When WWE went into HD programming earlier this year the wrestlers were told to work closer to not reveal the unrealistic moves.

      I think it’s fair to say at this point that the people who watch wrestling know it’s fake and only watch it for it’s storylines. Although give credit to McMahon for making his crap entertainment less crappier.
