Woman planned to butcher ‘Favre’ goat

If the title of this post sounds weird, you haven’t read anything yet.

From USA Today:

It started with a broken serpentine belt and a driver stopping in for a repair.

The woman was told the fix would take an hour and that she should stop back then. But before she left she had a little something to share.

“By the way,” service writer James Prusi recalls the woman saying, “There’s a goat in my trunk.”

Prusi wasn’t sure he heard correctly, so he asked the woman to repeat herself.

“She said she was going to butcher the goat.”

Now the guys at Tires Plus aren’t ones to meddle in their customer’s business, but then the goat started crying.

“It sounded like a child almost in the trunk,” said Prusi.

He and the other workers decided they just had to open that trunk.

That’s when the story got even weirder.

Under the lid they found the goat’s feet tied together. He was painted purple and gold. On each of the goat’s sides was a shaved Brett Favre number four.

Unsurprisingly, the woman was from Wisconsin and was apparently traveling with an unidentified man and child. The woman could face animal cruelty charges.

I don’t know if this was intended to be a joke or the woman is just clinically insane, but one thing is for sure – people love their football in Wisconsin. (And they’re apparently not above sacrificing a goat to get out the message that they’re not happy with Brett’s decision to sign with the Vikings.)

Bill Murray’s son a G.A. at Arizona

What’s a G.A., you might ask? It’s a graduate assistant, and they are generally unpaid (or very poorly paid) wannabe coaches fresh out of college who do all the things the coaching staff doesn’t want to do. Bill Murray’s son, Luke, just joined new coach Sean Miller as a G.A. at Arizona.

What does Murray bring to a basketball program? I have no idea. Presumably, neither does he; he only graduated college in 2007 and is still a G.A., meaning he’ll be doing quite a bit of quiet learning — preparing tape, taking notes, keeping the clipboard handy, that sort of thing — for at least a few more years. But he’ll be interesting to watch. If he has one-tenth of his father’s charisma, it’s only a matter of time until he’s a major college hoops coach on his own.

Good luck to Murray in his new endeavor. Something tells me he’ll do just fine.

Sanchez struggles in second preseason game

Rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez was just 3-of-8 for 43 yards, one touchdown and one interception (which was returned for a TD by defensive tackle Haloti Ngata) in the Jets’ 24-23 loss to the Ravens on Monday night. Kellen Clemens, Sanchez’s main competition for NY’s starting quarterback job, didn’t fair much better, completing just 5-of-10 passes for 60 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Sanchez almost threw a second pick in the game, but Ray Lewis showed off his stone hands on the play and dropped it. The rookie QB did bounce back after his poor start, hooking up with Leon Washington on a 19-yard touchdown pass before exciting the game after being hit in the head.

Even with this bad outing, chances are that the Jets will still name Sanchez their starter because Clemens hasn’t done anything to prove he deserves the job more. Sanchez has reportedly showed a stronger arm and more accuracy all summer and thus, will probably win the gig at some point.

This is just speculation, but if Sanchez starts and plays well Saturday night against the Giants, Rex Ryan will name him the starter shortly thereafter.

Rivers gets more guaranteed money than Eli

Quarterback Philip Rivers and the Chargers agreed to a new six-year extension worth slightly more than $92 million. Rivers will receive roughly $50 million over the first three years.

From the San Diego Tribune:

“I certainly couldn’t have asked that it could have gone any better than it did,” said Rivers, who signed the largest contract in club history shortly before Monday’s 4 p.m. practice. “I can’t say enough how excited I am and how thankful I am that it’s done, and (that) I’ll be here for a long time.”

Both sides expressed during talks the need to get the deal done before the regular season. There was the potential that Rivers could make a lot more money if he and/or the Chargers had a big season, but there was also the potential he could get hurt. And Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith had expressed his willingness to place the franchise tag on Rivers next offseason if no deal was reached.
There was a debate about whether or not the Giants overpaid for Eli Manning’s extension a couple weeks ago. Ironically, Manning got $34.5 million guaranteed and will make $48.5 million over the first three years, compared to Rivers’ $38.25 million guaranteed and $50 million over the first three years.

Manning has a Super Bowl ring, while Rivers does not. Yet there seems to be less outrage over Rivers’ deal than there was over Manning’s. Interesting.

Either way, the Bolts did what they had to do. They have a franchise quarterback in Rivers and they had to pony up after Manning signed his extension. When teams have a quarterback that has already proven he can win divisions and lead the franchise to the postseason, you have to do everything in your power to retain him.
