NBA News & Rumors: Shaq quotes, Bogut, Jackson, Agent Zero and Lopez

Shaq says Cavs are the best team he’s ever been on…at least on paper. Shaq has never been one to shy away from a juicy quote, but in touting his team, he calls Anderson Varejao “one of the top forwards in the league” and mentioned rookie Darnell Jackson by his nickname (D-Block). Um, okay. If it’s all the same, we’ll wait to see how this team fares on the court, especially in the playoffs. Did Shaq meet with the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department? Shaq refused to confirm the report: “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he told The News-Herald. “Undercover officers aren’t allowed to talk about what’s going on.” Classic.

Andrew Bogut is ready for more work. Bogut is coming off a back injury that kept him out for much of the last four months of the 2008-09 season. Given his career numbers — 11.9 ppg, 8.7 rpg — he’s not a bust, but he’s certainly not what the Bucks were expecting when they took him with the #1 pick back in 2005. Milwaukee passed on Chris Paul and Deron Williams, two franchise-caliber point guards, and even Marvin Williams might be looking better right now since he’s been able to stay healthy. Bogut played in 82 games his rookie season, but since then, he has missed 27% of his team’s games and the Bucks haven’t made the postseason. This is a big year for the Aussie, who needs to prove that his contract (worth $60 million) is justified.

Stephen Jackson to the Cavs? This rumor has Jackson heading to Cleveland for Zydrunas Ilgauskas and his expiring contract. The Cavs are already loaded at the wing with LeBron, Jamario Moon and Anthony Parker, but the saga of Delonte West, might have the Cavs looking to add to the arsenal. However, it’s going to be tough to find minutes for all of these players as it stands, and Jackson isn’t one to sit quietly if he’s not getting what he believes to be appropriate playing time.

Is Gilbert Arenas changing his game? Arenas has always been a shoot-first point guard, but he only took five shots and dished out 10 assists against the Grizzlies on Tuesday. HC Flip Saunders wants him to be more aggressive, so we’re more likely to see a watered-down version of 2006 Agent Zero than some new, pass-first variety.

Nets looking to run offense through Brook Lopez. HC Lawrence Frank redesigned his offense to feature Lopez at the top of the key and at the elbows. He wants Lopez to facilitate, so expect the second-year center’s numbers to rise with all the additional touches.

Is Eli’s foot getting better?

The New York Daily News reports that Eli Manning showed no limp while jogging and walking through drills at practice on Friday.

Manning, who hasn’t practiced all week, did have his injured right heel tightly wrapped under his sock and shoe, but he did not appear to be favoring it as he jogged and high-stepped through the pre-practice warmup. He also showed no ill-effects from the injury as he took part in the first-team offense’s walkthrough against the scout team. He was able to take snaps, drop back, hop in the pocket and throw with no obvious signs of pain or discomfort.

Of course, the media was positioned about 60 or so yards away from Manning, and we are only permitted to watch the first 20 or so minutes of practice. The Giants did little in that time that would truly indicate whether Manning will be able to play on Sunday against the Oakland Raiders.

Perhaps the only hint came when he took some snaps with the first-team offense, indicating there’s at least a chance. However, it should be noted that when the walkthrough drills began, David Carr took the first snaps with the starters.

The doctors have already told Manning that he won’t hurt foot anymore by playing on it, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be affected by the injury on game day.

Carr can turn around and hand the ball to Brandon Jacobs if need be to get the Giants a win over the Raiders this Sunday. But if the Giants need him to throw the ball to win, they could be in trouble.

It’ll be interesting to see what Tom Coughlin and the Giants decide to do with Manning over the weekend. He’ll likely be a game time decision.

Boycott coming if Limbaugh takes over as owner of Rams?

In a report by the New York Daily News, a couple of NFL players including the Giants’ Mathias Kiwanuka and the Jets’ Bart Scott said that they wouldn’t play for the Rams if Rush Limbaugh took over as one of team’s owners.

“All I know is from the last comment I heard, he said in (President) Obama’s America, white kids are getting beat up on the bus while black kids are chanting ‘right on,'” Kiwanuka told The Daily News. “I mean, I don’t want anything to do with a team that he has any part of. He can do whatever he wants, it is a free country. But if it goes through, I can tell you where I am not going to play.”

“I am not going to draw a conclusion from a person off of one comment, but when it is time after time after time and there’s a consistent pattern of disrespect and just a complete misunderstanding of an entire culture that I am a part of, I can’t respect him as a man.”

Kiwanuka cringes at the idea of Limbaugh becoming an NFL owner. “They are flat-out racist,” Kiwanuka said of many of Limbaugh’s statements. “He jumps on Obama and he jumps on other people for being racist. But a lot of the comments that he said, I feel like they have no place in journalism. It is just an opinion show that should be only be taken for shock value. I liken it to ‘South Park’ when I am listening to him.”

“I love Spags and would play for him in a heartbeat, but under that situation … obviously trades you have no control over, but if it was a free-agent thing, I wouldn’t care if I only had one offer on the table, I would rather stay a free agent.”

Granted, Kiwanuka and Scott are just two players but this could potentially be an issue for the Rams if Limbaugh takes over as part owner. The Rams are already at a disadvantage given the lack of talent on the current roster. If they’re limited in free agency because certain players don’t want to come to St. Louis, that will only further put them behind the eight ball.

And what about current players? What current Rams are cringing at the thought of Limbaugh taking over?

The St. Louis Rams franchise is quickly turning into the Detroit Lions.
