      John Madden, you sir, are no Brett Favre

      John Madden has worked 476 NFL games in a row. But that streak will end this Sunday after he decided that taking another cross-country trip by bus was too much and won’t call the Seahawks-Bucs game in Tampa.

      The 72-year-old Sunday Night Football analyst, who travels by bus because of a fear of flying, will take a break to spend time with his family instead of making three straight cross country trips, NBC said Monday.

      Madden went from Jacksonville, Fla., to San Diego last week; he would have had to return to Florida for this Sunday’s game at Tampa Bay. There’s no Sunday Night Football game the following weekend, so Madden would have then headed home to the Bay Area.

      Cris Collinsworth, normally a part of NBC’s studio show, will fill in for Madden.

      Lou Holtz goes off on Mark May, rips Colt McCoy off camera

      Awful Announcing has video of the humorous, yet awkward exchange between Lou Holtz and Mark May of ESPN’s College Football show, where Lou blasts Texas QB Colt McCoy in one of the network’s on-air debates because he thinks he’s off camera.

      That was just amazingly awkward and somehow still hilarious! The guy never ceases to amaze me. I think I’m going to coin a new term in this spot and that is the “Trainwreckability Scale” (which has no affiliation with Simmons’ “Unintentional Comedy Scale”). Right now Lou Holtz’s trainwreckabiltiy is sitting at an easy 95 out of 100. After his pep talk this week, he could shoot past 100.

      Oh and the other thing is…..he was right. Colt McCoy was not a great QB last year and there were no stipulations about the debate being just for this year or just for one game.

      That’s pretty funny, although obviously nowhere near Chris Berman’s off-camera meltdowns. And as for McCoy, he might not have been a good quarterback last year, but certainly has matured this season. He’s far and away the front-runner for Heisman after his performance against Oklahoma.

      They’re not booing, they’re saying “mooooooosehunter”

      VP hopeful Sarah Palin dropped the first puck at the Flyers game and if the crowd’s reaction to her introduction is any indication, she can forget about the McCain/Palin ticket winning Pennsylvania this year.

      Cheers to Palin for smiling and waving, seemingly unfazed by (or oblivious to) the boos. Jeers for dragging her children along in the hopes that it would convince some of the fans in attendance not to boo. (Who knows, maybe it did.)

      And jeers to Flyers owner Ed Snider for subjecting all of his team’s fans to his political agenda. Way to go, Ed.

      Misery for Lions fans continues

      How many different ways can the Detroit Lions manage to lose games? Better yet, how many daggers to the heart can Lions fans continue to endure?

      The Lions outplayed the Vikings for 59 minutes and 51 seconds on Sunday, yet Ryan Longwell’s 26-yard field goal with nine seconds remaining gave Minnesota a 12-10 win and dropped Detroit to 0-5 on the season.

      What’s worse for Detroit is that this safety by quarterback Dan Orlovsky (who was making his first career start) proved to be the difference (at least in terms of the final score) of the game:

      The sad thing is that Orlovsky was dangerously close to running out of the back of the end zone on the play before the safety.

      As if Lion fans needed to be kicked in jewels anymore than they already have.
