Brandon Marshall explains his attempt to make a political statement in support of Barack Obama during the Broncos’ 34-30 win over the Browns on NFL Network Thursday night.
One blogger at FanIQ.com sums up the situation pretty well:
Well done on Stokely’s part, showing the awareness and intelligence that Marshall seemed to completely disregard in his zeal to play politics during a football game. Celebrating Barack Obama’s victory is something that can be done on one’s own time, and probably shouldn’t be something that is planned on the company’s dime. I’m not sure why anyone would feel that it’s ok for athletes to make these sorts of political statements when they are “at work,” but I’m sure if anyone in a normal job were to celebrate election results at work in a way that could potentially damage the company, it would result in punitive action.
Is there a reason that athletes feel the need to abuse the public stage to express political views? I’m certainly not suggesting they be censored, but I do believe a certain amount of discretion should be considered, and I’m not sure that I see that in sports today.
Josh Childress raised a lot of eyebrows by signing a contract to play in Greece this season instead of staying with the Atlanta Hawks as a restricted free agent. He sits down with Mark Schwarz of ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” to talk about his experience thus far in Greece.
He also showed Schwarz his condo (which the team paid for) and drove him around town…
Since European teams have no salary cap, they aren’t bound by the same restrictions as NBA teams. Owners are willing to lose money on their team in order to win, so they are willing to pony up big bucks for quality NBA players like Childress. Playing for Europe isn’t for everyone, but Childress is something of a trailblazer for pulling the trigger on the move.
However, it sounds like he’ll return to the NBA after this season if he gets a good offer, which is likely. Childress’ contract is structured so that he can leave Greece after this season.
The entire column is a good read.
The newest addition to the Detroit Pistons gave everyone a good laugh at his presser:
I think Detroit will embrace A.I. and he’ll do very well there. It’s a passionate sports city and as long as athletes play hard, fans will be loyal to the death.
This might be the coolest play I’ve ever seen from a high school game.

Here’s a question though: Why do they have three separate angles for a high school game? When I played high school football, there was one camera on top of the scoreboard about 1,000 feet away. Now they’ve got multiple cameras on the sidelines?
